Also participating in the construction of the database are Carlos Bittencourt, a researcher from UPE, and Irene Martín, Sylvia Brito, Rubén Álvarez Iglesias, German Sterling and Pablo Cañón, all from USAL.
The database has three main sections: persons, documentary references and bibliographical references, which are all cross-referenced. The research team enters into the system persons that had some relation with Portuguese America in the period of the Iberian Union, 1580-1640, in order to compile as much data as possible on them and establish their network connections, be they political, social, economic or military. The database also has information about the movements of these persons between the two sides of the Atlantic, thus providing valuable information about the communications that existed between the colonial world and the metropolis at the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th century. Our aim here is to give present and future researchers a different kind of tool for embarking on the study of this period in the colonial history of Brazil, because although important studies have already been done, there are still many gaps in our knowledge, some of which we hope to fill through our research.
