The dangers of technological development have been the subject of many stories over the years, depicting dystopian societies in which the human being has been defeated by his own creation, either because the machines have rebelled against him/her or simply because citizens have been completely alienated and mesmerised by its possibilities. In this direction, this article analyses the representation of information and communications technology (ICT) in contemporary tv shows, by focusing on two of the most shocking titles that have impacted in both critics and the audience in recent years: Black Mirror (Channel 4, Charlie Brooker, 2011-) and Mr. Robot (USA Network, Sam Esmail, 2015-). These shows offer, a priori, two different visions of an alleged near future. However, far from the initial approach, a deeper analysis allows to discover that the forecast is not too promising and that, in any case, the benefit or the harm does not just lie in the technology itself, but in the use made ...

The establishment of mobile media and the development of Web 2.0, in parallel to the current omnipresence of user interfaces and the multiscreen landscapes, have led to the consolidation of changes in all spheres of life. Subsequently, and due to the hybridization and remediation processes inherent to the digital environment, the more conventional media have been considerably affected by these transformations in the media ecosystem. Accordingly, this chapter examines the influences and formal loans in film and television language by analyzing the aesthetic transfers occurring in fiction and non-fiction.

In the process of normalizing some surveillance dynamics in a society that has become increasingly more accustomed to infringements of privacy, citizens have been provided with a series of tools that allow them to control their peers. Thus, this paper relates interpersonal electronic surveillance to the negative implications that social networks may have for romantic relationships in the Spanish university context by analyzing three main aspects of interpersonal electronic surveillance: user perception and awareness, the types of pernicious social networking practices involved, and their consequences for romantic relationships. To achieve these objectives, a mixed methodology was used. Specifically, an in-person survey involving 311 respondents and two focus groups of seven and eight members, respectively, were conducted. All of the participants were undergraduate communication students between the ages of eighteen and twenty-six. Findings from the current study show that the respon...
