This article attempts to make a theoretical and methodological proposal based on the several critiques of the identified need to redefine interpersonal metadiscourse (IM) (Hyland, 2005, 2008). As a framework for the analysis of genres in specialized domains and languages other than English, IM presents important flaws, as is propositionality and the diversion of lexico-grammatical realizations of markers. Our proposal is based upon results of our own research, which focused on interpersonality, and points towards the need of a different interpersonal discourse framework, with a broader methodological projection.
Available from: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/318129363_El_discurso_interpersonal_en_la_guia_turistica_en_espanol_y_aleman_y_su_importancia_para_la_traduccion [accessed Jul 4, 2017].
metadiscursive interpersonal markers in two of its sub-corpora specialities: commerce (COM) and
press (PRS), in Spanish, containing digital texts which main functions are respectively to persuade
and to inform readers. The aim is to provide a new tool that aids translators to deal with this
interpersonal aspect of source and target texts, without which translations can suffer from a lack of
adjustment due to the metadiscursive socio-linguistic pattern that each language, genre and/or
speciality displays. The analysis starts identifying the most relevant discursive functions that every
speciality contains, after which a frequency analysis is applied to the sub-corpus so as to get a
wordlist and concordancing of the most salient interpersonal markers and categories. This leads to
a final pattern proposal that characterizes each speciality both quantitative and qualitatively.
Keywords: interpersonal metadiscourse, translation, corpus linguistics, digital texts.

Keywords: tourist 2.0, rhetorical functions, interpersonality/ interactional function, linguistic strategies, markers, persuasion.

Differences of interpersonal metadiscursive use in English and Spanish with the aim of persuading the reader. Characteristics of the linguistic-cultural substratum in both languages and consequences in the discourse of institutional web sites of touristic promotion. Study based on the COMET.VAL corpus of tourism.
Contrastive study of persuasion through the interpersonal function in institutional webs of tourism in English and Spanish. Importance of adjectives as attitudinal markers in Spanish versus hedges and commitment markers in English, creating different metadiscursive patterns.
The contributions in this volume deal with themes which are crucial to the demands of our modern society: intercultural business communications, one of the most challenging areas of specialized discourse and commerce; ICT and specialized translation, a current issue of utmost relevance terminology applied to translation; language acquisition in virtual environments; training interpreters through ICT, exploring the commercial needs of language industries; corpus-based research and ICT applications in specialized dictionaries; university e-learning courses and, finally, the state of research on specialized languages in Latin-America.
texts come second in importance to technical and scientific texts. This is why the
new book by Francisca Suau Jiménez, professor for specialized translation at the
Faculty of English Philology of the University of Valencia, Spain, comes in handy
for practitioners, students and teachers of economic and business translation. The
book presents a theoretically well founded and descriptive approach to the
intercultural comparison of economic and business genres which are most
frequently translated from English into Spanish and vice versa. Drawing on her vast
experience with the material both in practice and in teaching, the author offers the
reader useful hints and strategies for a translation-oriented linguistic source-text
analysis, placing particular emphasis on the aspects of genre, register and metadiscourse
The hypothesis is that, if interpersonal metadiscourse (IM) as a framework for the analysis of interpersonal features in professional, social and academic genres is conditioned by contextual variables, it would therefore need to be constantly refined and readapted to the specific corpus it is applied to, thus accepting new markers and/or new lexico-grammatical realizations. If this hypothesis is somehow confirmed by means of the debate and the conclusions that will emerge from the proposed round table, the scope will be opened for further refinement of the model which will allow us to cater for the description of a wider range of genres, disciplines, languages and corpora, with discursive and socio-linguistic implications.
To sum up, we will draw on several of our own studies carried out in specialized corpora from the standpoint of the IM framework, discussing their main achievements but also their limitations, due to the strict and extant pattern the model was designed with. Then, these four questions will be posed in order to hold a debate among the presenters and the audience:
Questions for discussion, related to the four analyses:
Q.1. Have any weaknesses being identified in the framework of interpersonal metadiscourse, especially related to markers and their lexico-grammatical realizations? and if so, which ones?
Q.2. Does each corpus determine the way in which the framework has been applied, or, on the contrary, has the research objective determined what corpus to collect?
Q.3. What differences can be observed in the interpersonal metadiscourse framework according to genre, discipline and language?
Q.4. What conclusions can be drawn and what suggestions can be made to facilitate methodological improvements in order to facilitate further research in IM? Which would be the theoretical implications?
Based on our contributions and on the implications emerging from them, differences will be identified in terms of variations in the degree of applicability of the model as regards the domain of specialization (professional and social vs academic), language used (English vs Spanish) and lexicogrammatical and phraseological indicators, among other aspects.
