During the early first millennium bce (c.900–612 bce), Assyria was the largest and most powerful state in Southwest Asia, ranging from Iran to Egypt and from Babylonia to Anatolia and the Mediterranean Sea. It was the largest imperial polity in the history of the world, until eclipsed by the Achaemenid Empire of Cyrus the Great in the late 6th century bce. Modern scholars have been somewhat perplexed by the empire's apparent sudden collapse in the late 7th century bce, calling its termination an “historical scandal.” Keywords: 10th–6th centuries bce ; ancient history; archaeology; western Asia
Research Interests:
Syria did not exist as a distinct geographical, cultural, or political entity until at least the Achaemenid period. Keywords: ancient Near East history; archives and documents
