2026, European Journal of English Studies
The European Journal of English Studies is calling for proposals for the topics of special issues of the journal that will be published in 2026. EJES presents work of the highest quality in Anglophone critical theory, literary, linguistic, cultural, media, and sexuality studies. This coheres with the plurality of English and Anglophone studies in Europe and relates to the journal's association with the European Society for the Study of English.

This is the Introduction to a special issue of EJES which focuses on narratives of religious conversion.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Who owns the English language? Why do people have variegated views on the different varieties of English? What are the premises and implications of these views? LIN833D (World Englishes) focuses on the issues, consequences, and ideologies of the global spread of English. This course is divided into two main parts: (1) models that explain the global spread of English through the World Englishes (WE) paradigm and (2) sociolinguistic problems and complications that arise from the global spread of English. This course problematizes traditional notions in linguistics such as "linguistic ownership," "nativeness," "language rights," "varieties," "accents," etc. The course also includes investigations of Englishes across different contexts, such as in traditionally English-speaking countries (e.g. USA, UK, Australia), postcolonial contexts (e.g. Philippines, Singapore, India), and others (e.g. China, Korea, Belgium, Japan). Students of English and linguistics, especially those who are interested in academic debates on the positioning of English as a world language and are trained in critical analysis, should find this course engaging.
