This book is dedicated to Mr. Linard H. McCloud, who is the longest employed teacher at Burke High School in Charleston, South Carolina. We celebrate his 40 years of effective teaching at the same school. To honor his commitment to education, we share our reflections on effective teaching through critical storytelling. Each chapter in this volume will share similar stories about teachers whom the authors deem as effective, while concluding with practical recommendations for current and pre-service teachers to employ in their practices.
This book presents case studies of two highly successful teacher education programs. It is part of a three-volume series that includes seven case studies. The book documents the goals, strategies, content, and processes of teacher education programs that are widely acknowledged as exemplars for preparing prospective teachers to engage in skillful, learner-centered practice. Using observations, interviews, and surveys, researchers examined all aspects of each program of study and clinical practice. The book documents the capabilities of prospective teachers who graduate from these programs by focusing on the teachers' own work during teacher education and in the field, interviews with faculty and administrators in the schools where graduates teach, and surveys of principals. The book also examines what policies, organizational features, resources, and relationships have enabled these programs to succeed. Some of the programs' common features include a clear, shared vision of ...

How Excellent Teachers Are Made: Reflecting on Success to Improve Teaching1998 •
The authors surveyed forty-eight distinguished teachers from clinical departments regarding the role of instructional successes in learning to teach. Using qualitative content analysis of comments, the authors identified nine common successes in clinical teaching associated with planning, teaching, and reflection. In anticipatory reflection used for planning, common successes occurred by involving learners, continuously innovating, creating a positive atmosphere for learning, considering the learners, engaging the learners, preparing adequately, and limiting content. When reflecting-in-action, the success experience most commonly mentioned was maintaining flexibility in action. Reflecting-on-action after a successful teaching event, they commented on the importance of thoughtful analysis and choosing an appropriate strategy. These teachers incorporated reflective practice into their teaching as an essential component of professional development and incrementally improved their teach...
For fifteen years, the presenter has engaged college students in discussions and writing assignments that pertain to the outstanding characteristics of their most effective teachers— " effective " meaning that these teachers made the most significant impact on their lives.

Commentary: The Question of Teacher Education2014 •
Addressing Hannah Arendt’s call to prepare the next generation to "renew our common world," this essay questions how we can simultaneously share our world with students and encourage them to question it. Because teacher education is suffocating in the stipulations of "best practices" that blanket the ambiguity that makes it interesting, this essay explores the questions that make this work compelling. It considers the inhibitions that constrain agency and imagination in teaching, the narratives that collapse experience into predictable accounts delivered to satisfy rubrics and protocols, and turns to the work of poet and classicist, Anne Carson, for a sense of story that opens up experience instead of closing it down.
Teaching and Teacher Education
Personal experience as a guide to teaching2000 •
In this paper, the authors analyze their experiences in using storytelling about teaching to prepare second-career teacher candidates. Cases of two program participants are developed to show how personal experiences, rather than multicultural program ideals, became instantiated as guides for teaching practice. The authors show how prospective teachers developed a speech community in which they clarified their individual paths to school success and attempted to transport these understandings to instructing students of color who were struggling in school. For analyses, the authors draw on ideas about how people work in differing social groups with particular discourses that support group cohesiveness and ideals. Implications for teacher education using narrative as a vehicle for critical reflection are presented.
