Background. Body weight or BMI do not provide any information about the content of muscle tissue, water content, body fat and its distribution in the body. Thyroid dysfunction is associated with a change in body weight, but also its composition regardless of physical activity. Objective. The aim of the study was to compare the body composition of female patients diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease (HD) and the body composition of healthy women who have never been treated before due to thyroid diseases. Materials and methods. The study involved 47 women diagnosed with Hashimoto disease (HD) and 65 women declaring good health. Body mass and height and body composition analysis using bioelectrical impedance analysis were performed using the TANITA multi-frequency segmental body composition analyzer. Variables having a distribution similar to the normal distribution were analyzed by the analysis of variance (ANOVA), otherwise the Kruskal-Wallis test was used. Results. Women with Hash...

Objective This study aimed to understand the association of anthropometric and body adiposity measures with thyroid dysfunction in clinical settings of Manipur, Northeast India. Materials and Methods The study included 160 Meitei and 152 Thadou-Kuki thyroid dysfunction patients undergoing treatment under medical specialists. Anthropometric data and related adiposity measures were collected along with the medical data. Results Hypothyroid represents 70.83% and hyperthyroid 29.17% of the total samples included in the study. The incidence of hypothyroid and hyperthyroid, irrespective of ethnic groups, is higher among females (87.49%) than males (12.49%). Hypothyroid individuals are significantly heavier and have higher adiposity measures than hyperthyroid, which is more significantly observed among the Thadou Kuki. Significantly higher waist circumference and weight to height ratio among the hypothyroid patients put the notion of adiposity deposition, apart from just water retention. E...

Background: The relationship between thyroid function, body weight and central obesity in euthyroid individuals has been given a great medical concern. Central abdominal adiposity can be divided into adipose tissue present in subcutaneous areas (SCAT) and visceral areas (VAT). The type of adiposity may be implicated in the associations of thyroid function parameters with obesity. The aim of the present study was to evaluate thyroid function and its possible relationship with BMI, body fat percent, waist circumference, SCAT and VAT in eu-thyroid female subjects. Methods: Randomly selected eu-thyroid female subjects were included in this study. Their BMI was estimated by metric method, body fat percent was measured by Harpenden skin fold caliper. Ultrasound (US) was used to assess regional adiposity. Serum TSH was measured from fasting serum sample by Enzyme-linked-immuno-sorbant (ELISA) Assay. Data was analysed by SPSS (version 18).Results: A positive linear association was found betw...
Objective: To investigate whether there is an association between Body Mass Index (BMI), Body fat percent and serum Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in eu-thyroid female subjects. Methods: 103 randomly selected eu-thyroid female subjects were included in this study. Their BMI was estimated by Metric method, Body fat percent was measured by Harpenden skin fold caliper. Serum TSH was measured from fasting serum sample by Enzyme-linked-immuno-sorbant (ELISA) Assay. Results: A positive linear association was found between BMI and serum TSH level (r=0.342, p<0.002). Body fat percent of eu-thyroid female subjects also showed strong positive linear correlation with serum TSH level (r=0.628, p<0.000).. There is gradual increase in serum TSH values among three BMI groups i.e normal weight (BMI <23 kg/m 2), overweight (BMI 23.00-24.99 kg/m 2), and obese (BMI >25 kg/m 2) females. Conclusion: Serum TSH level increases with increase in fat content of the body. Obese women shows higher serum TSH level even if the upper limit of TSH is within normal limit.

Objective: The present study was investigated to determine the correlation of body mass index (BMI) with thyroid-stimulating hormones (TSH) in thyroid patient. Methods: The data which are used in this study were taken in Tagore Hospital and Heart Care Centre (Jalandhar). A total of 90 volunteers both males and females in the age group between 17 and 85 years were included in this study. The following information taken on pro forma such as age in years, height (cm), weight (kg), and history (including: Chief complaints, family thyroid history, blood pressure, temperature, and head and neck examination) from the subjects were collected. Serum T3, T4 and TSH test are performed by the use of instrument ADVIA Centaur@CP Immunoassay System (SIEMENS). The total data were divided into three groups named as: Subclinical hypothyroid (SH) (n=30), euthyroid (n=57), and hyperthyroid including only three patients, and according to age, weight (kg), height (m2), and BMI, the mean±standard deviation...

Introduction: The aim of the study was to correlate the thyroid hormone profile with the age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), with body fat percentage (BF%) in apparently healthy person. Materials and Method: 84 normal subjects were included in the present study. In thyroid hormone profile S. TSH, Total S. T3, and Total S. T4 were estimated by lumax chemiluminescence immunoassay strip reader in the laboratory. Height, weight and BMI were recorded by standard method and BF% was calculated by the formula. Analysis was done by SPSS software.
