A Study of Stress and Sources of Stress among First Year Medical Students of Rangaraya Medical College, Kakinada2019 •
Background: Stress is an epidemic of 21st century. Medical school environments in India are extremely stressful leading to suicidal attempts by the students. Most common sources of stress among medical students are fear of failure, vast amount of subject that has to be learnt and inability to cope up with high expectations of parents. It can lead to physical and psychological problems as well as poor academic performance. Aim: The main aim of the present study is to know the prevalence of stress in first year MBBS students of Rangaraya medical college and to explore the sources of stress in these students. Study design and setting: Cross sectional study on first year MBBS students of Rangaraya Medical College, Kakinada, AP. Methods & Materials: Study included 130 first year MBBS students (53 males, 77 females) who were administered a Standardized Stress Questionnaire developed by ministry of social security, National solidarity and Reform institutions to identify the sources of stress which includes both academic and non academic problems. Statistical Analysis: Data was analyzed manually by summating the scores and expressed as percentages and proportions. Results: Our analysis showed that all males in the study group are having low level of stress whereas among females, 30(88.2%) are having low level of stress and 4 (11.8%) are having medium level of stress. Conclusion: The results from our study showed that academic problems were greater sources of stress than non academic problems among the first year MBBS students of Rangaraya Medical College, Kakinada, AP.

A Study of Factors Causing Stress among First Year Medical Students in a Medical College inNortheastern India2019 •
Medical Education is inherently stressful and demanding.First year medical students as they enter an entirely different world of medical school for first time provide a perfect platform for inducing stress.This study was undertaken to explore the various factors which may be the causes of perceived stress among the first year medical students of a medical college in northeastern India.A predesigned, semi-structured questionnaire with 23 questions was preparedand 76 students were analysed.Out of the 76 students, 55(72.36%) reported high levels of stress of which 27(35.5%) were males and 28(36.84%) were females.The main causes of stress in our study were found to be academically related, the vast syllabus of the first year MBBS, difficulty in covering portions daily, getting less time for revision etc
Background: Stress in medical students is a well documented fact that cannot be denied and more or less it is system oriented. Through a minimal amount of stress is essential to ignite a healthy and competitive spirit, but stress above that minimally accepted amount may hinder the overall growth of students; personal or professional. Objective: The present study was designed to find out the level of stress among the first year MBBS students and factors associated with stress. Material and Method: A cross sectional study was designed using Kessler K10 questionnaire to evaluate stress level among first year MBBS students. 100 Students from a newly started government medical college in north India region participated in the study. Statistical Analysis: Microsoft excel 2007 software was used for analyzing data. Results: The response rate of study was 84% e.g. 84 students out of 100 returned back the filled K 10 questionnaire. Prevalence of mild, moderate and severe stress was 39.28%, 21.43% and 3.57% respectively. Out of this 35.71% of the study group was not under stress. Conclusion: The prevalence of stress is high in the study group. The major stressors among first year medical students were high expectation form parental side, huge syllabus, frequency of part completion tests, performance in examination, lack of sleep, low confidence level and lack of emotional and social support. Our study emphasize on early intervention to cope up stress in medical education system. Counseling sessions for students and arrangement of mentorship for them are demand of today.

A study of prevalence of perceived Stress in first year medical studentsIntroduction: Stress is defined as a force of deleterious nature external or internal, physical or mental that tends to disturb the organisms integrity or homeostasis. Medical education poses great amount of stress to the students, as the study of medicine is extensive and time consuming more so among the first year medical students. Aim and Objectives: The present study was conducted to identify the potential stressors among students and develop strategies to help students combat stress in an effective manner. Materials and Method: This cross sectional questionnaire based study was conducted among first year medical students belonging to 2015-2016 batch of Sri Siddhartha medical college, a composite college Sri Siddhartha academy of Higher Education a Deemed to be University at Tumkur. Results: A total of 130 students participated in the study and their questionnaire based responses were analyzed. 76.92% of students identified examination related issues and competition among peers (76.92%) as a major source of stress among them followed by loneliness 34.61%, apprehension about teachers 43.84%, as a possible source of stress Listening to music and watching movies were the medium through which of the students sought relief from the stressors followed by spiritual activity and sports. Conclusion: First year medical students are exposed to varying degrees of stress and identification of potential stressors with effective intervention by structured mentorship programs along with student counseling the students can be guided in a better way to perform well in their scholastics.
