Decolonial thinking and Europe: Decolonisation between particularity and universalism2024 •
Colonisation continues to have a tremendous impact on large parts of the globe and not only on previously colonised countries. Many of the current geopolitical, economic and environmental challenges that the globe faces cannot be thought of without taking decolonial thinking into consideration. In his Preface to Fanon’s book, The Wretched of the Earth, Jean-Paul Sartre argues that this book is not written for Europeans, yet he challenges Europeans to read it. It is between such particularism and universalism that this article will engage with decolonial thinking in the context of the globe’s various geopolitical, environmental and political challenges. Europe’s colonial claim to universalism cannot be separated from Christendom. In this article, this Christian colonial universalism will be brought into conversation with an attempt at a decolonial theology.

ABSTRACT Title: THE STATE OF DEGRADATION OF THE SÁBALO RIVER BASIN, IN THE PUERTO QUITO CANTON, PROVINCE OF PICHINCHA, ECUADOR. Author: Vicente Saúl Castañeda Mejía. Director of thesis: Dr. Adelso Nikolai Malavé Figueroa. The problem of degradation of water basins have been a problem, to which weak laws or laws that are not applied correctly must be added. In this sense, the concern to care for and protect nature is vital, which is how this research on “The state of degradation of the Sábalo River basin, in the Puerto Quito canton, province of Pichincha, Ecuador” was born. The fundamental objective is set to define experiential situations in accordance with the reality that is currently happening in the water basin, thus, “Evaluating the state of degradation of the Sábalo River basin, in the Puerto Quito Canton, province of Pichincha, Ecuador” is urgent. This study is fundamental, our water basins are mortally wounded. The basin is running out of native flora, as evidenced by the extinction of large guaiacum and mahogany trees, trees whose growth may have lasted several decades, and which were the life and sustenance support of the basin, no longer exist. On the other hand, environmental policies and an environmental culture that contribute to the protection of the water basin are needed; the destruction of water basins is widespread in Ecuador, so it is also necessary to seek their recovery with the reforestation of native species, environmental education and the application of laws and regulations. To carry out this descriptive research work with a non-experimental design, data was collected through interviews with one hundred owners of farm-type lands adjacent to the basin. The type of research is transversal, direct observation was applied through tours in the basin. According to the results obtained, we can say that the destruction of the water resource is imminent; there is a predisposition to recover the basin, for which we must reforest and take care of the buffer area. We all must care for and protect the basin. In conclusion, the basin is almost completely destroyed and we must work together for its urgent recovery. An environmental culture is required, the application of laws to avoid the destruction of water basins, and the development of a reforestation plan with native species. It can be concluded that the majority of those interviewed agree that it is possible to recover the Sábalo river basin in a sustainable way. Keywords: Natural resources, destruction of rivers, water resources, water protection, water sustainability.
