Urban Nightscape and Issues of Gender in Call Centre Industry in India2014 •
Women in India were always accepted in conventional profiles of nurses, teachers, secretaries or clerks. But today, against this phenomenon a large number of women are joining call centres. In a transnational call centre, work during day time is very rare and typically starts in late evening hours. This comes into contrast with traditional gender roles of women as mother, wife or care taker within the family. Indian society, with all its diversities, remains traditional patriarchal system. As women enter the global labor pool, particularly its nightscape, they experience negative gender based reactions like “what these women are doing in the night?” or “why are they out of their places for so late?” which are generally given to prostitutes or bar dancers. These kinds of reactions or comments provide a context for thinking about women’s access to night shift employment opportunities. Against this background I have made an attempt to study and analyse how does their family relate themselves to their work? How they negotiate their gendered identity and whether call centre industry in context of night shift employment is better suited for women professionals? Thus, it would be useful to look into the new image of women in India “breaking of stereotypes” and working in non-traditional sector of employment.
Atrocities against women are noticing regularly in both electronic and press media every day. Abuses towards women are not new issue for Indian society, but most of time cases are not noticing. Small kind of abuses, Annoying, irritation, domestic violence’s, blackmailing, threatening teasing, may be resulted in distress of women and death also. However in order to prevent such issues both Govt and NGO’s designed many more preventive and rehabilitative programmes. Woman’s help line is one of the prominent program me for distressed women. Most of time atrocities against women’s are charged by her well knowing people only. According to the A. Shakuntala, Deputy Director, Department of Women and Child Welfare, Dakshina Kannada, says that what help lines get is probably 10 per cent of sexual abuse incidents against women. Not outsiders, but relatives have been found involved in many cases. This is what the reason most of time cases are not visible by outsiders or authorities. Here researcher made an effort to understand worth of the women help line programme through descriptive research methodology of Basavana- Bagewadi Block of Bijapur District.

In this paper we examined the role of Devadasi brothel madams in promoting safe sex practices among sex workers. Qualitative, in-depth interviews were conducted with twelve brothel madams as a follow-up of a larger cohort study that aimed to understand the patterns and determinants of sex workers migration from northern Karnataka to southern Maharashtra, in India. Our research identified that madams were ex-sex workers, who entered into sex work through the traditional Devadasi system and currently manage Devadasi sex workers in their own brothels. The social and kinship relations between the madams and the sex workers form the basis on which these brothels function. Brothel madam's role in the promotion of safe sex and their influence on sex workers in seeking health care is tied to reciprocal kinship relations, reveals an important area of opportunity for HIV prevention efforts to fully exploit these positive aspects of these relationships within intervention design and servic...
Relatively high wages and the opportunity to be part of an upscale, globalized work environment draw many in India to the call center industry. At the same time, night shift employment presents women, in particular, with new challenges alongside the opportunities. This book explores how beliefs about what constitutes "women's work" are evolving in response to globalization. Working the Night Shift is the first in-depth study of the transnational call center industry that is written from the point of view of women workers. It uncovers how call center employment affects their lives, mainly as it relates to the anxiety that Indian families and Indian society have towards women going out at night, earning a good salary, and being exposed to western culture. This timely account illustrates the ironic and, at times, unsettling experiences of women who enter the spaces and places made accessible through call center work. It seems generally accepted that targeted interventions in India have been successful in raising condom use between female sex workers (FSWs) and their clients. Data from clients of FSWs have been under-utilised to analyse the risk environments and vulnerability of both partners. The 2009 Integrated Biological and Behavioural Assessment survey sampled clients of FSWs at hotspots in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu (n=5040). The risk profile of clients in terms of sexual networking and condom use are compared across usual pick-up place. We used propensity score matching (PSM) to estimate the average treatment effect on treated (ATT) of intervention messages on clients' consistent condom use with FSW. Clients of the more hidden sex workers who solicit from home or via phone or agents had more extensive sexual networks, reporting casual female partners as well as anal intercourse with male partners and FSW. Clients of brothel-based sex workers, who were the least educated...

Beyond the Brothels: A Qualitative Study of the Destitute Female Sex Workers of Central Delhi Red Light Area2017 •
The term ‘sex workers’ refers to those involved in prostitution. This particular term is preferred as it does not have the derogatory, sexist connotation that the term ‘prostitute’ has. Belonging to a highly stigmatized profession with no financial and familial support forthcoming, the latter years of the lives of destitute female sex workers are spent in abject misery and poverty. Effort has been made to study the socio economic status and the ways adopted by these women, post active prostitution period, to support themselves and their families. This paper is based on the field study conducted in central Delhi red light area during August-September, 2016. Direct interviews with the respondents using questionnaires as well as participant observation techniques were used to collect the data. The study indicate that destitute female sex workers, once out of active prostitution, start working as domestic helpers, work with local voluntary organizations, or as helpers in brothels. The i...
