: The world of development and technology has completely redefined the leisure and pastimes of today’s man. The use of ICT on one hand influences leisure and pastimes of a person, on the other hand, changed pastimes effect the use of ICT. ICT a vast field is inclusive of social media. The paper explores the effects of ICT (Information and communication technology) on leisure and pastimes of people; both young and old and how use of ICT changes the perception and views regarding pastimes. The locale of the study was Universities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The data was collected using the semi structured questionnaire from 80 respondents. The nature of the study was qualitative. The study revealed that the ICT use majorly texting and calls were the major pastimes of the youth, the majority spent at least 1-5 hours on calls that strongly affected the health. The ICT use majorly included social networking that weakened the familial bonds.
The fact that leisure is a social activity is recognized by individuals in this study as well as by researchers both past and present. However, free-time activities differ in their social dimension. Since digital technologies alter the meaning of leisure activities, they may also affect their social properties. In order to examine, within the constructivist/interpretive paradigm, the social properties of digital leisure activities, the authors analyzed the narratives of 30 users of home-based digital technologies for leisure purposes. Their results suggest that digital leisure activities have social properties which differ from those of traditional leisure activities. The social properties of digital technologies transform the meaning of leisure activities, creating interconnected leisure spaces where it is possible to be socially connected and available.

Focusing on older women—a highly challenged group of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) users—this study aims at exploring the roles ICT plays in later life leisure. The study is based on 27 focus groups conducted in seven countries (Canada, Colombia, Israel, Italy, Peru, Romania, Spain), with the participation of 184 grandmothers (age≥65) who use ICT. Findings indicate that ICT plays dual roles in the women’s leisure. On the one hand, it helps them remain active and socially engaged by saving time that could be used for leisure, facilitating participation in various activities and allowing for more meaningful leisure experiences both online and offline. On the other hand, its use often entails wasted time and disrupted involvement, or simply serves as ‘time filler.’ These findings suggest that ICT affects all defining aspects of leisure, namely time, activity and experience. The impact of technology may be similar in other age and gender groups.

This study aims to discuss millennial santriin pesantren. The millennial santri is closely related to the millennial generation discourse discussed first by Strauss and Howe in their work entitled "Generation and Fourth Turning". They try to classify the generations based on the similarity of the birth span and the similarity of certain events. Millennial generation is those born between the 1980s and 2000s and have a very social behavior attached to the use of internet technology (digital natives) in everyday life. From the beginning, many have criticized this prediction because they only consider macro matters regardless of micro factors, so such discourse is not considered to be cross-socio-cultural but in contrast, through this study, the authors found the fact that micro factors do not preclude the prevailing of such predictions. It can be seen through the institutionalization of free time as the widespread access to cyberspace by santri in pesantren environment. In cyberspace, most santri connected through the use of social networking Facebook and Youtube. With these findings, it can be argued that santri are no longer the children of the pesantren tradition but at the same time have become representative of the modern tradition that developed outside the pesantren environment. In addition, at the same time, it also dismisses the notion that micro factors can preclude the prevailing of such predictions.

An Investigation of the Role of the Internet in Leisure Time Activities of Razi University Students2012 •
Nowadays, there has been an increasing count of actively social media using individuals. This new kind of media which is used by most of the population can generate an impact on users’ tendencies. Recreation activities increase individuals’ quality of life and provide them some physical, social, and psychological benefits. Individual’s participation to these recreation activities facilitate development primarily to the participant himself and then to the society. In this context, this study is an examination of active recreation tendencies on social media using individuals. It was conducted with 379 participants who studies at Higher Education in Sports. In order to measure social media users’ active recreation tendencies, a questionnaire based on the Recreational Exercise Motivation Measure which has the reliability and validity of Turkish version made by Gurbuz, Asci and Celebi (2006) and originally developed by Rogers and Morris (2003) and the Facebook Intensity Scale developed by Ellison, Steinfield and Lampe (2010) were prepared and used. According to Cronbach Alpha (α=0,878) the questionnaire found reliable. In order to analyze the results besides descriptive statistics of socio-demographics, the questionnaire was factor analyzed and three dimensions as physical, social and psychological tendency are obtained. Mann Whitney U and Kruskall Wallis tests are used to determine whether there are any significant differences.
COMMUNICATION As per the rapid development of technology, everything has changed their style and shape. However, some changes seem very positive but on the other side, it affects many valuable and intimacy-booster factors negatively. Keeping relationship alive with people through electronic means is not as much effective as the real face to face interaction is, because face to face communication will enable you to get more as compare to being engaged in wireless communication. Thus, the upcoming discussion will reveal all the shortcomings of technologies that affect communication pessimistically. It's well-known that communication plays a vital role in human being society because maintaining the relationship with family members, peers, relatives, and with all those who are close to us and touches our lives in one way or another is indispensable. Simply if we observe people in our community nearly half of them have access to some sort of technological means such as Smartphone, computers, tablets, iPods, and much more types of devices to use it for stable contacts instead of visiting and communicating closely and physically. According to Larry Rosen, virtual communication is not commendable like real world interactions. To see the enrichment and ubiquity of technological devices we are obliged to interact more with virtual friends than real-world people. As addiction, communication through electronic means takes more time than real-world communication even we know that it keep us in distance while not perceiving each other closely and intimately, despite of this, still publics; especially younger generations are using technological sources for communication and messages. And if we keep such a way of communication constant it will not let us interact personally. One study, conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation, found people ages 8 to 18 spent more time on media than on any other activity – at an average of 7.5 hours a day (Rideout, Foehr, & Roberts, 2010). It would have been a very good thing that people had considered physically existed communication essential and important. If they were aware that how much the real world communication is useful that may not have been engaged as much in non-natural ways of communication as they currently are. In 2010, a study proved that as internet use increased, time spent with family and friends decreased while 39% of Americans spend more time socializing online than face-to-face (Brown 2013). We may think as we are social by using electronic means for keeping relationship but according to Sherry Turkle psychologist: not engaging in real world communication is just a sip of communication because we cannot get comprehensive results from the virtual exchange of information.
Purpose: Digital technologies have offered individuals many possibilities for leisure, transforming leisure activities in the process, which involves changes in the leisure experience and practices. In this regard, we explore leisure transformation to find the meanings, transformations and motivations related with the digital leisure experience. The findings have leaded us to conceptualize the nature of leisure. Design/methodology/approach: Research is framed in the interpretive/ constructivist paradigm and the hermeneutic tradition. We interviewed 30 individuals that used to perform leisure activities with digital technologies, over a period of six months in 2009 in Barcelona. The analysis leaded to a set of conceptual themes by applying narrative thematic analysis to the corpus of texts. We searched for spaces and moments in which the activities were performed, the technologies used and the meanings, satisfactions and benefits of those activities. Findings: We revisited the research about the nature of leisure after the use of digital technologies. The findings suggest properties and features of leisure activities that are associated with the freedom to choose and carry out activities and with the technological characteristics. Traditional leisure is transformed when digital technologies are used for leisure. We provide evidences about it by describing digital based leisure in the homes and social leisure activities with digital technologies. Research implications/limitations: The study suggests that digital leisure has transformed the nature of leisure and the findings can be used for the design and development of home leisure technologies and the management of social activities. There is an opportunity to go deeper and find more information about digital leisure in other areas of people's life considering their families or other social connections. Also study digital leisure according to the evolution of digital technologies, devices and applications. Originality/value: The study provides a basis to redefine the nature of leisure and also explores the transformations in leisure brought about by digital technologies
