Fast Scan Submillimeter Spectroscopy Technique (FASSST): A New Analytical Tool for the Gas PhaseA new FAst Scan Submillimeter Spectroscopic Technique (FASSST) for analytical applications is described. It is based on voltage tunable Backward Wave Oscillators (BWOs), afast scan to 'freeze' frequency instability, and optical calibration methods. FASSST, due to its high resolution, is used to record the gas phase rotational spectra of mixtures of molecules (e.g. aromatic or heterocyclic compounds). This technique provides an unambiguous identification of the individual component compounds. The combination of FASSST with gas chromatography is expected to be an excellent method for qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Coupling inductively coupled plasmas with sector field mass spectrometers has led to a remarkable improvement of the analytical capabilites in the field of trace element determinations during the last decade. Looking at the analysis of pure water, the limiting factors for determining metal concentrations in the ng/I range are shown. The sensitivity of modern instruments is high enough for most practical purposes, and in our case, the detection limits of all measured elements were limited by blank values.A key factor for the analysis of soil and sediment samples is the content of total dissolved solids. The spectral resolution has to match the requirements given by the spectroscopic interferences. Therefore, a pre-analysis is necessary for diagnostic purposes if the matrix is not sufficiently known to predict the relevant interferences.

Herschelobservations of EXtra-Ordinary Sources (HEXOS): The present and future of spectral surveys withHerschel/HIFI2010 •
2010 •
We present initial results from the Herschel GT key program: Herschel observations of EXtra-Ordinary Sources (HEXOS) and outline the promise and potential of spectral surveys with Herschel/HIFI. The HIFI instrument offers unprecedented sensitivity, as well as continuous spectral coverage across the gaps imposed by the atmosphere, opening up a largely unexplored wavelength regime to high-resolution spectroscopy. We show the spectrum of Orion KL between 480 and 560 GHz and from 1.06 to 1.115 THz. From these data, we confirm that HIFI separately measures the dust continuum and spectrally resolves emission lines in Orion KL. Based on this capability we demonstrate that the line contribution to the broad-band continuum in this molecule-rich source is ∼20−40% below 1 THz and declines to a few percent at higher frequencies. We also tentatively identify multiple transitions of HDO in the spectra. The first detection of this rare isotopologue in the interstellar medium suggests that HDO emis...

The application of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI MS) to the structural characterization of natural organic matter2002 •
This report describes the application of electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry to the structural characterization of soil organic material, a critical component of environmental processes and the global carbon cycle. Quadrupole time-of-flight (QqTOF) mass spectrometry provided a routine screening of aqueous ions in humic and fulvic acid mixtures and MS/MS capabilities for selected ions. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT–ICR) mass spectrometry required longer analysis time but achieved resolving powers >80,000 and mass accuracies of
