The earlier chapters of this book presented a conceptual understanding of awareness (Eggen and van Mensvoort, 2009, in this volume; Metaxas and Markopoulos, 2009, in this volume). A historical account (Rittenbruch and McEwan, 2009, in this volume) as well as descriptions of various implementations (see Part III) illustrate how various systems have attempted to foster greater awareness. A common challenge faced by all awareness systems is the tension with an individual's desire for privacy (Hudson and Smith, 1996).

ABSTRACT This paper concerns the design of public displays that project casual awareness information, where passerby's quickly acquire a sense of who in a small group is around and available. After describing what we mean by casual awareness, we present several prototype designs. In particular, we take awareness information garnered from a small group inhabiting a physical environment and abstract it onto a scene.
ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction
Most systems that we use in everyday life are shared—because multiple people can interact or because an interaction by one person can affect other people. However, everyday Internet of Things systems are often designed for individual use. Prior research on collaboration technologies (Computer Supported Collaborative Work) has shown that to coordinate system sharing people require awareness of the social context, which interfaces can support by making salient information visible. Although literature exists on how to design for awareness, this can be fragmented and difficult to relate to other application domains. To introduce a broader audience of interaction designers to awareness, we aim to make the available design knowledge more generalizable and operational. With this aim, we construct the Designing for Awareness in Shared Systems framework that gives a structured and comprehensive overview of design considerations for awareness. The framework can stimulate reflection and inform...
This contribution is intended to highlight the many unanswered questions that arise in the historical-liturgical-archaeological interpretation of the Christian sites of late antiquity in Hispania. In Christian archaeological research, it is essential to gather all the material evidence that shows the Christianization of a given monument. The presence of a baptistery is an indisputable sign that we are dealing with a church, understood as a building for worship. And, once the 'Christianization' of a cult building has been recognized, we must add the lack of clear guidelines that would allow us to identify it as a monastery. This fact leads us to ask the question of this paper: What role did monastic communities play in the Christianization of the countryside? Were they able to assume the competences of the cura animarum at some point in late Hispanic antiquity? How are we to understand the presence or absence of a baptistery? In other words, does the basilica with a baptistery rule it out as a monastic enclave?
