Sharing Conservation Decisons: Current Issues and Future Strategies, 2018
Studies of decision sharing in heritage conservation show that sharing, even when attempted, usually fails to influence the decision. A far larger study of decisions made in commercial and noncommercial organizations showed that the failure to share the decision was a major cause of poor outcomes. Two common decision-making tools, the decision matrix and the decision tree, are explained. Conservation examples are discussed, including the decision matrix developed during the case study of the ICCROM Sharing Conservation Decisions (SCD) 2008 course. Tactics and ideas for effective sharing of decisions are drawn from recent texts on participatory decision-making, cognitive psychology, and experimental moral philosophy. The ability to be reflective, identified by Stanovich as a separate trait from intelligence, emerges again and again as the key piece of advice from the decision-making literature. The author concludes that, for our field, decision tools are best understood as a means to structure and document shared reflection, not to automate what are always difficult decisions.

Come to your house, come to your house! O you of Heliopolis. Come to your house, for your foes are not. O fair-sistrum-player, come to your house that you may see me, for I am your sister whom you love, and you shall not be parted from me. O fair youth, come to your house; for a very long while I have not seen you. My heart grieves for you, my eyes search for you, and I am seeking you in order to behold you.

In Gen 1:14–19, the astronomical entities “sun” and “moon” are conveyed by the author of the first account of creation in the Hebrew Bible by plural generic noun מארת/מאורות, “luminaries.” This lexical choice has been commonly explained by several scholars and commentators as a polemical device by P due to its potential association with popular ANE astral deities such as Utu/Šamaś and Nanna/Sin. This paper will challenge such interpretation and provide an analysis of Gen 1:14–19, highlighting how the luminaries play a pivotal role in the structure and understanding of the P creation account. It will also emerge how this proposed interpretation neatly fits a reading of the P story where yhwh is better understood as characterized as an initially distant and removed deity and how understanding the role of the luminaries in Gen 1 provides a comprehensive description of a self-sufficient creation, coherently with later representations of the cosmos in P. Finally, a preliminary suggestion on how the results of the present analysis might inform the understanding of בצלמנו כדמותנו (Gen 1:26) within the proposed structure of Gen 1 will be offered in conversation with Schellenberg’s work (2009).
