The sun rises anew every day: this image illustrates the opposition between an event (the sun that rises anew) and repetition (every day), and supports the structure of the world of experience in Heraclitean philosophy, while knowledge about nature is to be organized from a perspective outlook. The essay examines the meaning of the concept of harmony in the Heraclitean fragments using a musical kind of perspective. The ancient Greek musical theory, the melodic movement in the conjunct tetrachord that moves in an upward and downward movement along the same path, can be used as an illustration of the conceptual relation between opposites in search of a common point of convergence. The tension between opposites also runs through Apollo's arms that hold the musical chords of the lyre and the deadly string of the bow, which are connected to one another in the enigmatic fragment D.K. 51. The common limit of their convergence is the world of sound where the noise of the bow is the sile...

This work discusses the Hellenistic origin of some concepts underlying modern harmonic science. The framing of some ancient works in a long-term perspective allows us to highlight with particular evidence a drastic cultural break, which occurred around the middle of the 2nd century B.C., following which important conceptual tools for the theoretical modeling of musical acoustic phenomena, such as coincidences, resonances and harmonics, underwent a significant process of fragmentation and decontextualization before reaching the hands of humanists and scientists in the first modern age, to the point of inducing at the eyes of historians an image of the ancient harmonic science as a mere metaphysics dominated by mysticism and numerology.
