Pentecostalism is a charismatic and conservative movement which began in the USA at the outset of the 20th century and has widely spread throughout the world thanks to migration, urbanisation and the establishment of transnational denominations. Pentecostalism presents an intriguing paradox: on one hand, it recognises women’s specific ability to relate to God : on the other hand, women are often denied access to positions of authority within these churches. The chapters of this volume examine the situation of women in various Pentecostal churches, and how Pentecostalism shapes gender relationships. They look at the personal paths of women prophets, evangelists, pastors or pastors’ wives and at « women’s fellowships » to understand why the gendered distribution of responsibilities remains mostly in favour of men. The introduction examines the epistemological issues linked with the study of gender relationships and identities in Pentecostalism, the interactions between gender and migration, the relations between gender and authority. It also advocates the need for a critical assessment of the use of "charism" by sociologists of religion.

Drawing on meticulous fieldwork research including a remarkable set of Pentecostal churches and movements, this volume throws light on the relations between charismatic experience, moral conservatism and the situation of women in a major component of contemporary worldwide Christianity.
While the Assemblies of God (AoG) in French Polynesia insist on the dimension of choice in their definition of Pentecostal belonging, in contrast with the ‘historical’ Protestant identity inherited from parents, the conditions under which Pentecostal conversions take place lead us to qualify this simplistic opposition. The institutional recognition of personal conversion (through immersion baptism) by AoG ministers depends, in fact, on the regularisation of the conjugal situation. In so doing, they alter the process of conversion by transforming a supposedly personal decision into a conjugal and family negotiation. Adopting a gender perspective, the author first shows how the modalities of conversion to Pentecostalism and responsibility for such conversion vary significantly according to the gender and conjugal situation of the individual concerned. She goes on to question the signification of the ‘autonomy’ and ‘individual freedom’ promoted by Pentecostalism in so far as these are associated with a traditional division of gendered roles focused on the upholding of ‘familial values’.
