The systemic complications of blood donation are the first reasons why patients fail to return for further blood donation. This study was designed to determine the frequency of these complications and their associated risk factors among blood donors in Tehran. Also, we aimed to provide suitable methods to decrease the frequency of these adverse events, thereby eliminating the most important causes of withdrawal, while maintaining the health of the donors. This analytical descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 554 blood donors who had donated blood from February 2005 through September 2005 in four fixed blood donation bases and four mobile blood collection buses. Each base was considered as a stratum, and a stratified random sampling proportional to size was done to select the donors. Results showed donor reaction rate to be 13.4%, the most common of which were blackout of vision (7%), dizziness (6.3%), fatigue (6.1%) and nausea (1.8%). There was no significant relationsh...

Adverse events have been reported post blood donation. Donors might refrain from donating again due to such events which lowers the blood supply in collection centers. This study measured the incidence, predictors and severity of adverse events among donors of a single whole blood unit at one of the largest donation centers in Saudi Arabia. A retrospective cohort was conducted in 2015 to investigate the adverse events immediately post donation. Donor characteristics such as age, blood pressure, hemoglobin level, weight and history of donation were described and tested as potential risk predictors. Eligible blood donors were 18,936/24,634 (76.8%). Incidence of adverse events found 1.1% (208 donors), of which 0.65% had mild symptoms (chills; nausea; pallor; dizziness; nervousness; headache), while 0.45% had severe symptoms (hypotension; convulsions; syncope; respiratory distress; emesis). Multiple logistic regression showed that, the incidence of adverse events was significantly highe...

Introduction: Blood donation i.e. recruitment of new donors as well as the retention of existing donors forms an important backbone of any donation programme. Adverse events of any form can affect donor retention severely. This study aims to analyse the different types of adverse events with suggestions of the preventive measures. Material And Methods: Retrospective observational study conducted in allogeneic blood donors in Central India from January 2018 to May 2022. All the donor adverse events were recorded, retrieved and were categorised as vasovagal reactions, hematoma, extravasation, nerve injury. Out of total 95483 blood donors during the study period, 892 Results: 28 were males (93.45%) and 6255 were females (6.55%). The donations comprised 73216 (76.68%) voluntary donations in the blood center, 4756 replacement donations (5%) and 17511 units were donated in blood donation camps (18.32%). Overall, 1805 donors (1.89%) experienced adverse events with mean age of 36.0±6.3 year...

First-time donation is among recognised risk factors for vasovagal reactions to blood donation and reactions are known to reduce donor return. We assessed associations between potential risk factors and vasovagal reactions and needle-related complications in first-time whole blood donation in comparison to repeat donation and analysed the impact of complications on donor return. We performed a cohort study on whole blood donations in The Netherlands from 1/1/2010 to 31/12/2010 using data extracted from the blood service information system. Donation data up to 31/12/2011 were used to ascertain donor return. In 2010 28,786 donors made first whole blood donations and there were 522,958 repeat donations. Vasovagal reactions occurred in 3.9% of first donations by males and 3.5% of first donations by females compared to in 0.2% and 0.6%, respectively, of repeat donations. Associations of vasovagal reactions with other factors including age, body weight, systolic and diastolic blood pressu...

Background: Blood transfusion is a process by which blood replacement is performed in the treatment of various diseases with disorders of the number or function of blood cells or after bleeding. Blood helps save human lives and treat various diseases. Blood and blood products for the treatment of patients are prepared from the blood of voluntary donors. Objective: The aim of this sudy was to examine the frequency of adverse reactions in voluntary blood donors at the Polyclinic for Transfusion at the University Clinical Center Tuzla in the period 01.01.-31.12.2021. and, also, to determining the frequency, is to determine the severity of adverse reactions and the causes that led to them (gender, age, place of donation, whether they are more common during the first or repeated blood donation) as well as the consequences they leave behind. Methods: Our research includes voluntary blood donors who, in the period from 01.01.2021 until 31.12.2021., donated blood at the Polyclinic for Trans...

This two-voice text builds on Jean-Louis Genard’s remarkable article entitled “The decline or the end of the human exception?”. It extends a conversation the authors have been pursuing for some ten years on ways of dealing with the strained relationship between human beings and the living beings they are made of. Laurent Thévenot has considered how human beings elaborate personal engagements out of dependencies on the environment maintained by the living beings of which humans are made. Marc Breviglieri has explored the margins between the living and the human with people –children, adolescents, the homeless– who are in a position to cross these margins. They encounter Jean-Louis Genard’s thinking on the notions of autonomy (part one) and capacity (part two), while apprehending the human opening onto the living in its anthropological tension and in the symptomatology of the resulting troubles (part three).
