Since they have all been reset I have taken the opportunity to make a number of (usually minor) changes, which I have not in general bothered to indicate. There are occasional additions and changes of emphasis (noted as such when important) and also deletions, whether to avoid duplication with a later discussion of the same subject, or because I no longer believe in an argument published long ago. It was not easy to devise a rational sequence or grouping for papers on such a variety of topics. I have used a combination of generic and chronological criteria. Poets (1-5) are followed by mid imperial prose (6-8), historians (9-13), social and religious history, and Roman nomenclature (14-24). Inevitably, the older papers have been more thoroughly revised; for example, “The Roman Friends of Ammianus” (1964). “The Fate of Pliny’s Letters in the late Empire (1967) has been completely rewritten. I have made a number of additions and modifications to “The Pervigilium Veneris” (published in 1984 though written several years earlier) and “Poetae Novelli” (1980). I have reformulated and strengthened the argument of Part I of “Martianus and his First Editor” (1986) and substituted a new Part II. Those familiar with my early work may be surprised to see nothing on Claudian or Macrobius. For reasons explained in the preface, papers relating to Claudian were included in my Wandering Poets and Other Essays in Late Greek Literature and Philosophy (Oxford 2015). As for Macrobius, I incorporated a radically revised and expanded version of my earlier work in my Last Pagans of Rome (Oxford 2011), especially chapters 7, 10 and 16. Where relevant, I have also added occasional references to later works of my own. But I have made no attempt to “update” systematically, usually limiting myself to new work relating to the thesis of the article in question. I am grateful to Bob Scott, Head of the Electronic Text Service at the Columbia Libraries, for help in scanning the older texts, and to Carla Asher, for much editorial help and advice.
