We report on a series of prototype applications that support a range of documentary activities. We present ongoing work to design an architecture that involves reusable components that share a common storage model and application programming interface. We believe this approach will open the way for a suite of mobile apps, each having a specific purpose and audience, and each enhancing the quality and quantity of documentary products in different ways.

Aikuma: A Mobile App for Collaborative Language Documentation2014 •
2019 •
Lig-Aikuma is a free Android app running on various mobile phones and tablets. It proposes a range of different speech collection modes (recording, respeaking, translation and elicitation) and offers the possibility to share recordings between users. More than 250 hours of speech in 6 different languages from sub-Saharan Africa (including 3 oral languages in the process of being documented) have already been collected with Lig-Aikuma. This paper presents the lessons learned after 3 years of development and use of Lig-Aikuma. While significant data collections were conducted, this has not been done without difficulties. Some mixed results lead us to stress the importance of design choices, data sharing architecture and user manual. We also discuss other potential uses of the app, discovered during its deployment: data collection for language revitalisation, data collection for speech technology development (ASR) and enrichment of existing corpora through the addition of spoken comments.

(2018) Reflections on software and technology for language documentation2018 •
Technological developments in the last decades enabled an unprecedented growth in volumes and quality of collected language data. Emerging challenges include ensuring the longevity of the records, making them accessible and reusable for fellow researchers as well as for the speech communities. These records are robust research data on which verifiable claims can be based and on which future research can be built, and are the basis for revitalization of cultural practices, including language and music performance. Recording, storage and analysis technologies become more lightweight and portable, allowing language speakers to actively participate in documentation activities. This also results in growing needs for training and support, and thus more interaction and collaboration between linguists, developers and speakers. Both cutting-edge speech technologies and crowdsourcing methods can be effectively used to overcome bottlenecks between different stages of analysis. While the endeavour to develop a single all-purpose integrated workbench for documentary linguists may not be achievable, investing in robust open interchange formats that can be accessed and enriched by independent pieces of software seems more promising for the near future.

Collaborative mobile knowledge sharing for language learners2010 •
The CloudBank project aims to build a mobile-and web-based crowd-sourced information system to help international students further their knowledge and understanding of local UK language and culture. The system enables students to collect, annotate, and tag interesting or puzzling language-and culture-related content found in everyday life, including text, images, and other media, and to upload these content items to a repository. From the repository, the information can be syndicated, eg via RSS feeds/widgets integrated into ...
This paper identifies authoring tools requirements for the development of cultural applications tailored for deployment on mobile devices: Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and mobile phones. To address this issue it recognizes and evaluates the development and design facilities provided by state-of-the-art multimedia application development tools for PDAs and mobile phones: Macromedia Flash Lite, Navipocket, Java 2 Micro Edition and Microsoft. Net platform for the Mobile Web. Secondly, it describes the use of these tools for ...

A user created content approach to mobile knowledge sharing for advanced language learners2009 •
Mobile and ubiquitous learning technologies hold out great promise for students of foreign languages who are resident in a target language country, since they can be used in the contexts in which the language learner needs to use his/her language skills for deploying or interpreting language. The CloudBank project aims to integrate a user created content paradigm with mobile learning technologies so that language learners can upload, share and comment on interesting language items they encounter in everyday life in the target ...

Place Branding and Public Diplomacy
Place branding: is it public policy, or isn't it?2024 •
This article explores the question of whether place branding should be considered a public policy. While place branding has gained attention in the fields of marketing and related disciplines, its connection to various public policy areas highlights its broader implications. This study aims to provide conceptual clarity on the matter, arguing for the inclusion of place branding within the public policy discourse. The article employs a conceptual framework to assess the alignment of place branding with the key attributes of public policy. A comparative case study of nation branding practices in seven European countries—Estonia, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, and Slovakia—is conducted to assess the applicability of the conceptual framework of public policy to studying nation branding. The case study demonstrates the potential of such approach, highlighting gaps and challenges in the current practices of nation branding. The article concludes by discussing the implications of applying the policy approach to place branding and exploring future research opportunities.
