Trojan War Locale: Numismatic Evidence
A case is made in recent books by Lascelles and Crowe that Homer’s Trojan War setting was not at Schleimann’s Hisarlik site of King Priam’s Ilium, but at Pergamon. We review their case, the places frequented by Homer as possible clues, and the Iliad’s revision as compiled and promoted by Athens and followed by Alexander the Great and the Romans. We then focus on numismatic evidence in the alternative regions of Northwest Anatolia (NWA) and Central West Anatolia (CWA). NWA includes the regions known as Troas, North Mysia, Hellespontic Thrace with nearby islands, and Bithynia. CWA regions include South Mysia with nearby islands, Aeolis, Ionia, Lydia, and Phrygia, as well as Cilician expatriate lands. We find that NWA coins are rich in early Iliadic mythology, indicating that Ilium was a Trojan War setting. However, we also find indications that the war was more extensive than commonly envisioned. It was led in CWA by King Telephus, who spearheaded an East versus West world war whose campaigns ended at Ilium.
Damascene tetradrachms of Caracalla
“In the reign of Caracalla a region wide production of tetradrachms was initiated in numerous mints, including Damascus. A die study was conducted on the silver issues of this mint to determine the chronological order of the obverse and reverse type varieties. Preliminary results indicate that there was no apparent reason for the different styles used to depict the emperor on the obverse (laureate/radiate, bare/draped, etc.). The study also set out to determine if minting had been initiated with the rare reverse type depicting the emperor’s bust supported on an eagle. Although this aim was not achieved due to the limited data at hand, an alternate proposal for this special issue has been put forward. The study also provides an insight into the production method and output of these Damascene tetradrachms with the aid of a statistical analysis and a die link diagram.” American Journal of Numismatics 26 (2014): 187-198.
A HOARD OF ROMAN COINS FROM TARSUS 2018
The golden period of frequent metal detector finds is over, but it is not completely unusual that a new hoard of coins is found at an ancient site or a long-lost settlement, but unless it is an official excavation, they usually disappear unrecorded. That said, not all officially excavated finds are published promptly for one reason or another, even though, there are plenty of online publishing opportunities now. A great deal of information is lost once a hoard is dispersed without being studied no matter how insignificant the number and variety of coins in that hoard are. Once on the market, tracing a hoard is usually very difficult depending on dispersion strategy employed, especially when only a few coins at a time are offered. There is enough evidence for such a hoard, from Tarsus in Cilicia, which has been dispersed in the last year.

Introduction
The purpose of this catalog is not to propose a new classification, but to present all the examples of the
coins of Roman Province of Commagene from mostly the second century AD, in the ANRO collection, in a
sylloge format. The structure of the catalog is based on the work of Kevin Butcher “Coinage in Roman Syria”
London, 2004. Firstly, the coins are separated by mint, then ruler, and then by denomination, according to
Butcher’s proposed classification. Coins of the same type are then organized according to their obverse
inscription, beginning with the most complete.
The description of the obverse and the reverse of the type is provided before the table of specifications.
Obverse and reverse fields of the table include the inscriptions as seen on the coins, except for when box
brackets are used, where the inscription is assumed from other examples. Inscription orientation and starting
point is provided for types bearing circular inscription. Numeral letters in the field represent a date. In most
cases dates pertain to the reigning year of the emperor; in others, dating starts from the Samarian era (beginning
72 or 73 AD). As much reference as possible is provided for each example. Countermarked coins are noted
below the table.
