What drives entrepreneurial action to create a lasting impact? The creation of new ventures that aim at having an impact beyond their financial performance face additional challenges: achieving economic sustainability and at the same time addressing social or environmental issues (Dean & McMullen 2007). These so-called hybrid organizations try to be congruent with their blended values, despite being under external pressure in the process of maturing the new venture (Mcmullen & Warnick 2016). This research explores not only the initial motivations of the entrepreneur as potential influence on the ventures' blended values, but also the source of finance.

Critics of entrepreneurial capitalism have argued that entrepreneurship createsdysfunction in individuals, families, communities, and society because entrepreneurs neglectsocial and environmental dimensions of value in favour of financial value creation. By way of contrast, hybrid organizations, such as Benefit Corporations, are created explicitly to addresssocial and environmental objectives in addition to their financial objective. Therefore, in thispaper we explore the consequences of a world of blended value in which every new venture isrequired to be a hybrid organization. In doing so, we reveal the boundary conditions of current social criticism levied against entrepreneurship and suggest that blended value may best be relegated to the role of ideal or guideline as opposed to normative or legal obligation. As the economy continues to struggle, and solutions at either side of the spectrum appears to have their respective challenges, attention are now being directed towards the promise of The Hybrid Model. This study examines through an action research approach the pros and cons of The Hybrid Model in comparison with other organizational structures, with focus on accessibility to resources, longevity, innovation capabilities and benefits to the society. Data collection is conducted through Nevara, an Urban Farming Platform, a Social Venture focused on healthy food by offering services to Farmers and Farmers’ Markets.Traditionally, innovation has been thought of a something that relates to new technology, but as accessibility to information and competition intensifies - so is also the need to innovate throughout the whole organization. Focus on sustainable solutions has also gained importance, which is important to keep in mind when building organizational culture and a brand which both can thrive in the short-term and long-term life stages of the organization. Hybrids, in particular those structured as a non-profit with earned income, might gain competitive advantages through the ability of attracting talent willing to work for a lower salary due to alignment with the mission. As it is increasingly difficult to secure traditional funding as a for-profit startup, founders whom are passionate about a specific cause might learn that doing a Hybrid Model better fit their growth opportunities, in particular those who have plans to leverage crowd funding. This study covers in detail Social Entrepreneurship and The Hybrid Model, and how the triple bottom line approach can improve impact on social and environmental causes.
Sustainability
This paper aims to investigate how sustainable entrepreneurs innovate in business models to overcome their hybridity-related tensions to achieve environmental, social, and financial goals. A case study was conducted on 12 organizations in seven countries from October 2018 to June 2019 through observation visits, interviews, and secondary data collection. To analyze the data, a content analysis was applied with the help of NVivo Software. The analysis category is based on the definition of the pillars of business models: (1) Value proposition, (2) value creation/delivery, and (3) value capture. Concerning value proposition, organizations engage various stakeholders on developing emotions related to sustainable behaviors. They use the idea of community to promote it, fostering the sharing of intangible values. Associated with these actions, organizations offer more convenience accessing these products or services, home deliveries, facilitating access by geo-location, price reduction, ...

Growing evidence suggests entrepreneurial ecosystems are a potent engine for economic and community development. Prior research has identified an ecosystem’s culture as serving a critical role in its creation and functioning. However, it is not clear how the cultural forces in entrepreneurial ecosystems develop and are shaped by individuals, organizational actors, and ecosystem-level institutions. Drawing from institutional theory and theories of multiple logic organizations (i.e., hybrids), this paper combines entrepreneurship and management research to argue that entrepreneurial ecosystems are influenced by two dominant institutional logics: entrepreneurial-market and community. By combining both logics, hybrid support organizations, such as incubators, accelerators, and small business development centers, play a unique role in entrepreneurial ecosystems by exposing participants to the two guiding logics. Furthermore, it is argued that intra-ecosystem variation among hybrid support organizations in the dominance of entrepreneurial-market and community logics, will result in a diversity of entrepreneurship within an ecosystem. This theorizing contributes to the understanding of entrepreneurial ecosystems by shedding light on the role institutional logics and hybrid support organizations play in ecosystem formation, structuring, and function and by explaining the genesis of the cultural values that guide ecosystem participants.

This case study successfully clarifies the main sources of shared values in the Social Value Creation (SVC) process in both Social Enterprise A (SE A) and Social Enterprise B (SE B). Applying leadership approach and skills is a key source of shared values for SE A and is followed by networking. Meanwhile, SE B places more stress on human values and qualities, especially with the special knowledge owned by social entrepreneurs and their teams, followed by the capacity and resources provided by the company. This case study also successfully identifies a set of similarity values in order to strengthen the Social Business Model (SBM). All those sources of benefits, values under social values and economic values highlighted by both types of SE provided theoretically positives impacts, such as efficient operation, sufficient resources (tangible or intangible), and motivation for both sides. Meanwhile, the benefits of economic values come from the impact of managing the cost, risks, and ma...

This paper calls for a paradigm shift in the face of the remarkably common, but ultimately stereotypical and simplistic perceptions of ‘Islamic’ constitutions requiring all laws to conform to Shari’a. It problematizes the term ‘Islamic’ to describe disparate constitutions and constitutionalism(s) in Muslim majority countries demonstrating the plurality of ‘Islamic’ constitutions, locating this descriptor within varied socio-cultural, historical and political contexts of the Muslim world. Plural interpretations of the religious texts in Islam — i.e., the Qur’an and Sunna — and meanings of complex concepts — ‘Shari’a’ and ‘Islamic law’, are integral to Islam’s (legal) traditions. In Muslimmajority countries, a variety of constitutional texts, court decisions and state practices, demonstrate this plurality. We argue that use of ‘Islamic’ as a descriptor for heterogeneous constitutional texts, is a product of ‘realpolitik’ and deployed in this manner, un-nuanced, simplistic, and reductive of the dynamic and plural nature of Shari’a.
