This paper deals to create awareness amongst the civil engineers, residents and owners of building towards the health examination of existing concrete buildings called as Structural Audit. The need of structural audit is for maintenance and repairs of existing structures whose life has exceeded the age of 30 years to avoid any mishaps and save valuable human life. The concrete is widely used as construction material being inexpensive, easy for construction, applications and because of it high strength-cost ratio. More than ever, the construction industry is concerned with improving the social, economic and environmental parameters of sustainability. In India, from 1980 onwards the infrastructure industry witnessed stepping up of public investment and growth in infrastructure industry which results in construction of new multistory concrete apartments which are now in the age of thirty plus years. There are many buildings during this period and earlier have reduced strength in due course of time because of structural deficiency, material deterioration, unexpected over loadings or physical damage. If, further use of such deteriorated structure is continued it may endanger the lives of occupants and surrounding habitation. There is demand of appropriate actions and measures for all such building structures to improve its performance and restore the desired functions of structures which may leads to increase its functional life. The periodical structural auditing and diagnosis for health of existing buildings is thus utmost important for finding the present serviceability and structural viability of structures. The structural audit must be carried out following auditing norms, methods of non-destructive testing and code provisions. The structural A.B. Mahadik & M.H. Jaiswal 412 auditing will help to implement maintenance and repair work timely which leads to prolonged life of the building and safety of the occupants.

In Our country there are as many as old aged structures which have reduced the capability of performance day by day as the result of climatic adverse actions and distinct weathering moves however nearby upcoming use of such deteriorating structural elements may be very drastically harmful for the living being staying out there because the overall strength of elements went down notably. As a consequence the structural audit of such structural elements becomes too much vital. Structural audit can result in extended existence of those deteriorating structural elements and as a result in increasing probability of safety of structure and the people staying there. If the age of the structural elements constructed is about twenty five years then the regulating municipal organization files the legal form of written document for structural audit of such particular structural elements for structural audit also provides the affected place of faults and additionally offers corrective form of few remedial & repair measures for prevention of similarly probable occurrence of strain in structure. After performing audit priority for the repair should be given according to the severity of defect found.

Civil Engineering Industry is one of the oldest industries which provide a basic infrastructure to all the human beings. Structures can be any kind it can be Historical, Heritage Structure, Residential building, Commercial building or an Industrial building. Every structure has its own service life, and within this servicelife it should stand firmly on its position. ExATajMahal in Agra in India which is one of the oldest structure and a Wonders of the World, and still stand on its position very efficiently. But this not a condition about the today’s Structures. A collapsed mechanism has increased and today’s Structures are getting collapsed before there service life is completed. Therefore, it is advisable to monitor it periodically by taking a professional opinion. Structural Audit is a preliminary technical survey of a building to assess its general health as a civil engineering structure. It is usually initiated as the first step for repair. In this Project a Root Cause of a faul...

We are building the structures rapidly in the area where there is requirement of the structures. Every structure has its own service life. Every structure is designed by assuming its life of existence. Some of the structures gets more life than expected and some gets fail in achieving its life. Any technology or material has its limitation to withstand. Many of the structures of R.C.C. are located in Seismic prone area. The structures gets damaged due to earthquake and the structures which becomes old should be checked that whether it has the strength of existence or not. The structures should be audited timely for the safety of the human life as well as for the nearby structures. The structures can be checked by various methods of Non-Destructive Test (Rebound Hammer Test, Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Method, Pulse Echo Method, Probe Penetration Test, Destructive Test. Rebound Hammer Test of Non-Destructive Test is used in this paper to check the strength of an institutional building. When examining the structure, this paper aims to expand the life of structure. Different techniques of Retrofitting is given to the structural member which is unsafe. By applying the retrofitting, the structure can be made safe.

In civil engineering field is directly impact to civil society to provide a basic infrastructure in all sectors of human beings. The recent time various problems occurred in the building like damages and collapse at age of above 30yr and to this problem are avoided they need to structural audit. Audit is a health monitoring of whole building. Structural audit give idea about current condition of building and necessary measures taken so that the life of building can be increased. And they can also suggest some rehabilitation and retrofitting techniques. Like beam strengthening, column strengthening & slab jacketing. The structural audit should be carried out following standard norms methods of NDT test and code provisions.
STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING OF A CONCRETE STRUCTURESIN GAUTAM BUDDHA UNIVERSITY
Structures are load bearing objects which become fatigue over period of continuous load application leading to strength reduction. The strength loss associated with reduced internal energy of the structural system consumed during work for sustaining the applied force in the static equilibrium position Deformation monitoring is a major component of accumulating measured values and data, that may be used for further computation, deformation analysis, preventive maintenance and alarming of impending structural danger. Structural Health Monitoring is engineering process of observation and determination of damages and flaws, including characterization of strategy for rehabilitation of structures, which enables assurance of continuity of functionality and structural loading purposes. The process involves observation of structural system over time period, using periodically sampled and dynamic response measurement and equipments. Collection of damage-sensitive features from the measurements, and statistical analysis are used to determine the current state and condition of structural systems. For long term observations, output of the process are periodically updated, which can provide information regarding the ability of structure to perform functionally and adequately, in the midst of prevailing information of degradation resulting from operational environments.

This review paper covers the study of Structural Health Assessment of RCC Buildings. Structural health assessment is the structural audit/ technical survey of the building in order to check its strength, stability and life of the structure. Structural audit is the preliminary step in restoration and maintenance of the building. Structures can be any kind it can be Historical, Heritage Structure, Residential building, Commercial building or an Industrial building. Every structure has its own serviceability period, and within this period it should stand sturdily on its position. A collapsed mechanism has increased and today's structures are getting collapsed before there service period is completed. Hence, it is suggested to monitor it periodically by taking a structural expert opinion. In this Project a Root Cause of a faulty mechanism of structure and a preventive measures to overcome a failure of this structures. The need of structural audit is for maintenance and repairs of existing structures whose life has exceeded the age of 30 years to avoid any catastrophe and disruption. Now a days buildings have reduced strength because of structural deficiency, material deterioration, unexpected over loadings or physical damage. There is demand of appropriate actions and measures for all such building structures to improve its performance and restore the desired functions of structures which may leads to increase its functional life. The structural audit must be carried out following auditing norms, methods of non-destructive testing and code provisions. The structural auditing will help to implement maintenance and repair work timely which leads to prolonged life of the building and safety of the occupants.
Buildings constructed during early 70's & late 80's of the last century in India are found to be in distressed conditions due to inadequate specifications and poor construction practices. The continuous monitoring of concrete structures using suitable NDT (Non Destructive Testing) methods and use of possible restoration methods help in a considerable reduction of the rate of deterioration of concrete structures thereby increasing the life span of structures. NDT methods have greater advantage in evaluating the uniformity, homogeneity, approximate compressive strength, durability, the extent of corrosion of rebars in concrete etc. of damaged structures. The objective of the present study is to enhance the life of 50 year old existing hospital building (Partly RC and Brick masonry) in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. Condition assessments are carried out through a visual, field and laboratory evaluation of samples collected from the structure and results are presented in this paper. The paper also highlights the assessment of strength and durability of concrete to evaluate the extent of distress and damage in the building. Besides visual inspection, the Non Destructive Evaluation covering UPV & Rebound Hammer values and Half Cell Potential with respect to the status of corrosion of reinforcing bars and chemical tests on selected un-distressed RC columns, beams, and slabs are also presented and discussed. The repair and strengthening techniques using the latest materials and possible restoration works such as column jacketing, shotcreting, anticorrosive coatings, etc. have been suggested to enhance the life of the structure.
