The purpose of this chapter is to focus on the military, cultural and ideological background to the emergence of Byzantine military treatises as well as to the copying, abbreviation and adaptation of ancient ones between the ninth and eleventh centuries. First I will examine military and cultural factors mainly within the Byzantine empire, and then I will focus on ideological reasons, taking into account the competing dynamics in the Abbasid caliphate and the West (i.e. the Papacy and the Carolingian and Ottonian worlds). Finally, I will explore whether these forces trigged a Byzantine response which facilitated the re-emergence of military literature in Byzantium. This attempt will hopefully provide a deeper understanding of the ‘golden age’ of military literature in Byzantium as well as raise new questions for future disciplinary and interdisciplinary inquiries.

Lo scopo del presente corso in dieci lezioni è quello di mostrare come un momento fondamentale per la costituzione dell’estetica moderna, la concezione del bello e dell’arte all’interno del “sistema delle Belle Arti”, determini una nuova e originale comprensione della musica e del suono. La tradizionale iscrizione di musica e suono all’interno delle scienze matematiche subisce con Batteux una nuova reinterpretazione retorica. A partire infatti dalla categoria aristotelica (e oraziana) di imitazione si tenta per la prima volta di costituire un corpus unitario delle arti, a cui la musica viene ad appartenere. Ma proprio in musica questa unificazione in nome del principio di imitazione mostrerà i suoi aspetti più problematici, nelle tensioni e torsioni che questo principio subisce ad opera dell’altrettanto centrale nozione di espressione. Concetti fondamentali come, ‘genio’, ‘gusto’, ‘bella natura’, e naturalmente ‘imitazione’ ed ‘espressione’, verranno fatti convergere nell’esposizione e nel commento critico delle pagine dedicate da Batteux a musica e suono, per mostrare i principali problemi a cui dà luogo la concezione della musica come arte bella.
