Int. Workshop: Developing Planetary Sustainability

During the excavation of St. Stephan's Church in Leuk (Switzerland) in the 1980s, a well-preserved mummy with clothing and shoes was found in a wooden coffin. Subsequently, the mummy underwent restoration, but the observations have never been published. Therefore, an interdisciplinary investigation was recently organized that included a thorough archaeological and anthropological documentation in collaboration with specialists in costume history and leatherworking. The aim was to gather evidence for the dating and preservation mechanism, as well as to determine the biological profile of the individual. The investigation was accompanied by a noninvasive examination with a mobile x-ray device, which enabled identification of sex, age, body height, and pathologies. The clothing (cape, blouse, skirt, drawers) and the shoes were subjected to a detailed stylistic and technological examination. The individual is female, aged 45-60 years, with foot deformities that might be related to constricting footwear. Stylistic details of the shoes indicate that the burial dates from the first half of the 17th century, more precisely to the 1630s. Despite her simple clothing, the burial location attests to her respected position in society.

This volume contains the complete collection of published and unpublished work on German grammar by Tilman N. Höhle. It consists of two parts. The first part is Topologische Felder, a book-length manuscript that was written in 1983 but was never finished nor published. It is a careful examination of the topological properties of German sentences, including a discussion of typological assumptions. The second part assembles all other published and unpublished papers by Höhle on German grammar. All of these papers were highly influential in German linguistics, in theoretical linguistics in general, and in a specific variant of theoretical linguistics, Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar. Topics covered are clause structure, constituent order, coordination, (verum) focus, word structure, the relationship between relative pronouns and verbs in V2, extraction, and the foundations of a theory of phonology in constraint-based grammar.

Das Christentum liefert vielfältige Vorgaben, wie Männlichkeit, Weiblichkeit und ihre Gemeinsamkeit oder Unterschiedlichkeit zu verstehen sind: biblische Erzählungen, Verhaltensmuster aus seinen Umgebungskulturen, Rituale, Lebensformen. Diese werden als vollzogene Praxis, aber auch durch Theologie, Predigt oder sozialen Wandel immer wieder herausgefordert und umgeformt. Das neue Rottenburger Jahrbuch für Kirchengeschichte betrachtet diesen komplexen historischen Prozess der Konstruktion von Geschlechterrollen und spannt dabei den Bogen vom Mittelalter zur Moderne. Weitere Beiträge widmen sich den Jesuiten in Württemberg, den Laienkatechetinnen im Bistum Rottenburg (1920 bis 1958) und der Tübinger Theologie „von Drey zu Hirscher“. Ein reichhaltiger Rezensionsteil beschließt den Band.

Das könnte allerdings vieles sein, dieses, was man der Natur gegenüberstellt oder mit ihr verbindet. Gegenbegriffe sind Kultur, Geist oder Gnade, aber auch die Technik, die wiederum oft in Gegensatz zu dem so schön klingenden Paar »Natur und Umwelt« gestellt wird. Das Denken selbst aber vollzieht sich mit dem Geist, und dem Bedenken dieses Paares »Natur und Geist« wollen wir uns hier widmen.

Zum Inhalt: Auch Räume haben eine Geschichte. Geschichte findet zudem immer auch in Räumen statt. Was versteht man aber in der Geschichtswissenschaft un-ter »Räumen«? Und wie kann man sie historisch untersuchen? Susanne Rau gibt einen Überblick über die Geschichte abendländischer Raumkon-zepte, vermittelt interdisziplinäre Zugänge zum Phänomen »Raum« – von der Physik und der Geographie bis hin zur Philosophie und Soziologie – und erläutert, wie sich historische Raumanalysen methodisch-theoretisch konzipieren und praktisch durchführen lassen. Mit diesem Buch liegt erst-mals eine Einführung in die Theorie und Praxis der historischen Raum-analyse vor. Zur Autorin: Susanne Rau ist Professorin für Geschichte und Kulturen der Räume in der

Juan de Borja, a major music patron in the Iberian World in the last third of the 16th and early 17th centuries, died in 1606. In his testament he arranged to sell all his goods in a public auction to satisfy his wills. Among the several kind of goods inventoried, there were instruments and music books. From vague descriptions in the inventory, appraisal and sale documents, I have been able to reconstruct a table of 34 items, 23 of which I have managed to identify and 16 of these are preserved in several sources in libraries and archives scattered around Europe and the United States. This reconstruction has been possible following a deep study of the 1606 inventories, the tracing of these books through some inventories and catalogues dated from the 17th to 20th century, and a close research with musicologist and archivists from all over the world.

The paper analyzes Karl Popper’s and John Eccles’ account of mind-matter interaction and compares their use of the concept of downward causation with other more recent accounts of it, especially those of Nancey Murphy and George Ellis. The argument includes John Polkinghorne’s take on Divine action, as it provides an interesting version of downward mind/matter-interaction. It will be argued that while downward causation is a speculative concept, it nevertheless remains the best approximation to a scientific perspective on mind/matter interaction that we can obtain. As a result, Popper’s and Eccles’ account seems to be more interesting in these regards than usually assumed, and should not continue to be overlooked in the debate.

Purpose: The present study aimed at the comparison of body height estimations from cadaver length with body height estimations according to Trotter and Gleser (1952) and Penning and Riepert (2003) on the basis of femoral F1 section measurements in post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) images. Methods: In a post-mortem study in a contemporary Swiss population (226 corpses: 143 males (mean age: 53 ± 17 years) and 83 females (mean age: 61 ± 20 years)) femoral F1 measurements (403 femora: 199 right and 204 left; 177 pairs) were conducted in PMCT images and F1 was used for body height estimation using the equations after Trotter and Gleser (1952, ''American Whites "), and Penning and Riepert (2003). Results: The mean observed cadaver length was 176.6 cm in males and 163.6 cm in females. Mean measured femoral length F1 was 47.5 cm (males) and 44.1 cm (females) respectively. Comparison of body height estimated from PMCT F1 measurements with body height calculated from cadaver length showed a close congruence (mean difference less than 0.95 cm in males and less than 1.99 cm in females) for equations both applied after Penning and Riepert and Trotter and Gleser. Conclusions: Femoral F1 measurements in PMCT images are very accurate, reproducible and feasible for body height estimation of a contemporary Swiss population when using the equations after Penning and Riepert (2003) or Trotter and Gleser (1952).

The joining point of these two branches is in Kukesi town. Kukesi town became famous for hosting of thousands refugees from Kosova in 1999. Black Drin springs from the Ohri Lake. White Drin springs from the Bjeshket e Namura (Kosova). Middle course (Vau i Dejes Lake, Komani Lake and Fierza Lake). Lower course (Adriatic depression).

History is not only construed and handed down in writing. In popular cultural prac- tice, it has long been edited and can be experienced in many forms. Past debates have not treated these practices well, however, and concentrated primarily on representa- tional forms shaped by historical politics, such as museums and schoolbooks, as well as by entertainment-oriented media, such as television documentaries, feature lms and TV-series, video and computer games, as well as non- ction and novels. In this context, doing history, understood as a discursive and performative visualisation of the past, has hardly been explored, although it has quite a long tradition. In this introduction, we pursue an access that is both theoretical and practical, and draw closer to doing history on the basis of three central pairs of concepts that have strongly in uenced the cultural and historiographical debate over the last several years: ›body_emotion‹, ›experience_space‹ as well as ›thing_meaning‹. History is created in the interplay between person, body, space and object. The physical and a ective experience in uences, in interaction with the evocative experience of pres- ence, as well as the relationship and meaning of the object and the actions and inter- pretations of individuals, what is capable of leading to sensational, certainly cultur- ally subjectively shaped imaginations from the past.

Joseph Furttenbach the Elder (1591-1667) was a Swabian architect, scenographer and engineer as well as a collector and prolific writer. During his youth he spent twelve years in Italy, absolving a mercantile apprenticeship in Milan and Genoa. His interests in arts and techniques lead him to undertake extensive travels across the peninsula: in Florence he even met Galileo Galilei. Back in Swabia, he settled down as a magistrate and merchant in the imperial city of Ulm. Thanks to his cabinet of curiosities and his numerous treatises, during decades he played an important role in the transfer of Italian Renaissance and Baroque culture to the Holy Roman Empire. Kaspar von Greyerz, Kim Siebenhüner and Roberto Zaugg have published a critical edition of Joseph Furttenbach's diary (Lebenslauff, 1652-1664): an autobiographical text which provides fascinating insights into the daily life of a pious Lutheran, a member of the urban elite and a renowned scholar of seventeenth-century Germany.

Celebrating the centenary from Benjamin's Bern Dissertation, "The Concept of Criticism in german Romanticism", the International WB Conference was held in Bern in june.
