La distribuzione delle ceramiche di Montelupo nel mondo: interpretazioni preliminari2022 •
This study deals with the creation of a dataset containing the findings of pottery fragments produced in Montelupo Fiorentino (FI) published in the archaeological literature. The dataset obtained collects information regarding the location of occurrences, decorative genre, chronology and, where documented, the number of fragments found. The dataset was subjected to semi-automatic geocoding in order to create a georeferenced file for the visual representation of the distribution. Spatial analyses (point pattern analysis, Kernel density estimation) were carried out on the dataset with the aim of verifying the possible presence of areas of higher concentration and possible preferential channels of distribution. The results show a significant increase in long-range exports that began in the last twenty years of the 15th century and decline after the first years of the 17th century. Some data proved to be of particular interest, such as the documented findings in Santo Domingo of fragments of Montelupo pottery datable between 1480 and 1520 CE. This would imply the very early arrival of maiolica from Montelupo on American shores. Furthermore, an apparent tendency to locate the finds in areas close to the coast has been noted. The possibility of enriching the dataset with new and more functional data and comparing it with data from other Italian productions could deepen the knowledge of the commercial practices in use in the Italian peninsula between 1290 and 1790 CE.
