This paper deals with a particular kind of ludic objects, the so-called fritilli (or dice-shakers). Usually, peculiar types of small pot of pyriform or cylindrical shape are considered fritilli in Pompeii, but the question can be faced in a different way. The work carried out in the storageroom of Pompeii has permitted to identify several gaming sets in which the presence of fritilli can be attested. The data here presented can offer new insights to the question, shifting from a morphological approach to a contextual one, as suggested by the last perspectives of research. This paper underlines, once again, the complexity of the Pompeian material culture and allow us to throw new lights on the ludic habits of the ancient inhabitants.

Il presente lavoro fa parte di un più ampio progetto volto a dare la giusta visibilità scientifica alle raccolte Civico Museo Archeologico di Milano a ormai sessant’anni dall’edizione del primo, e sinora unico, fascicolo del Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum dedicatogli. A differenza di quanto fatto da Gianguido Belloni per il volume edito nel 1959, si è abbandonato un approccio “miscellaneo”, ma si è deciso di pubblicare dei materiali omogenei dal punto di vista crono-tipologico e produttivo, in questo caso la ceramica attica a figure nere. Gli oggetti in catalogo coprono un arco temporale che si estende dall’ultimo trentennio del VI sec. a.C. sino alla metà circa del secolo successivo, e offrono un panorama variegato, dal punto di vista morfologico, sulle produzioni attiche del periodo in esame, comprendendo crateri anfore, hydriai, lekythoi, kyathoi, coppe e skyphoi. I vasi provengono da diverse raccolte private, poi assorbite nelle collezioni Civico Museo Archeologico di Milano mediante acquisto o donazione; si tratta delle collezioni Emilio Seletti, Pompeo Castelfranco, Luigi Fusier, Giuseppe Carlo Riquier. I materiali facenti parte della collezione Cima Pesciotti sono invece stati acquistati dallo Stato con l’esercizio del diritto di prelazione e successivamente depositati presso il Civico Museo Archeologico.

The study of the Attic-figured pottery is closely connected to the “Beazley method”, which consists in the possibility of recognizing a painter’s hand exclusively on a stylistic basis.
Although it has suffered some criticism, the Beazley method is still considered substantially valid. The need to collect images which can be analyzed from a stylistic point of view convinced us to combine 3D photogrammetry (Agisoft Photoscan) with 3D modeling (Luxology Modo) software in order to transfer the figured frieze from a vase to paper, thus avoiding the limitations of traditional direct drawing. These tools allowed us to contribute to the debate on the Beazley method; in fact, new research showed that Beazley over-divided Attic pottery, identifying many more painters than actually existed. This paper deals with the potential of 3D modelling applied to the Attic-figured pottery and focuses on the case of the Painter of Syracuse 19861, to whom Beazley attributed only two lekythoi (both belonging to the Lauricella collection from Gela and today displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Syracuse). The use of the 3D modelling process allowed us to obtain images proving that the two objects belong to the
Ethiop Painter’s final production instead of to a different painter.

Ippolito Cafici (1857-1947) played an important role in the italian palethnological scene between the nineteenth and twentieth century. In this paper  the relationships with Gaetano Chierici Luigi Pigorini and Pellegrino Strobel, the three co-founders of “Bullettino di Paletnologia Italiana”, are analyzed through a number of unpublished archival documents. The collected material allows us to reconstruct an interesting overview into the dynamics within the "Bulletino" and to show the leading role played by Luigi Pigorini in the scientific formation of the young Cafici. Ultimately it shows the figure of a prominent scholar in the scientific debate of the epoch, and at the same time aware of the fundamental role of culture in the formation of national identity.

The ancient Greeks represented roosters in many different cultural contexts, ranging from depictions on orientalising vases of the Early Archaic period to the comedies and tragedies presented at dramatic festivals in fifth-century Athens. Most studies on roosters in ancient Greek culture have approached the topic from a single disciplinary perspective, focusing only on iconography, or dealing exclusively with symbolic or literary aspects. This paper, by contrast, proposes to bring together two distinct approaches and disciplines, namely iconography and literary analysis. In so doing, the study will demonstrate how analysis of data drawn from two different disciplinary fields can lead to new and relevant hypotheses about the change in value and significance of the rooster in ancient Greek cultural production between the end of the Archaic period and the beginning of the Classical age.
