Considered a “small rural sanctuary” similar to other sacred areas around the lake (Monte Landro, Poggio Evangelista…), it is likely to have been an important landmark of the religious and political landscape of Southern Etruria, being at the intersection of the territories of Velzna/Orvieto, Vulci and Tarquinia. The study of the structures and of the various artefacts (architectural terracottas, statues, anatomical ex-votos, votive bronzes, coins…) sheds new light upon the chronological evolution of the sanctuary and its cultual practices, particularly during the Roman period.

What did he really do at Musar-na? It is understood that he extracted twenty-three Etruscan sarcophagi from many tombs, however this is only known because some of them were purchased by the American Consul Hector de Castro to establish the collections of the Penn Museum in Philadelphia and the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology in Berkeley. Archival documentation conserved in Italian and foreign institutions now make it possible to retrace the phases of a rather long and tortuous history, with its many implications. By examining the correspondence between the different individuals involved in the story, Mancinelli Scotti himself, Arthur L. Frothingham, Sara Y. Stevenson, Wolfgang Herbig – and also indirectly Felice Barnabei, William Pepper, Carl Jacobsen, Phoebe Apperson Hearst –, the complex relationships between these various protagonists clearly emerges, in which economic interests, power games and personal revenge intervene, often at the expense of archaeological research. All of these events took place in a very important period for Italy and its cultural heritage: foreign museums were still concerned with increasing their collections of Italic antiquities, which were favoured due to a legislative vacuum that had existed since the unification of Italy, while the Italian State, worried about the incessant export of its artefacts, was trying to reduce the legal dispersion of antiquities.Part of the objects found by Mancinelli Scotti in Musarna are shared between Viterbo Museo Civico, Copenhagen Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Philadelphia Penn Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Berkeley Phoebe Hearst Museum.

For many scholars who are interested in the late Nineteenth – early Twentieth century excavations... more For many scholars who are interested in the late Nineteenth – early Twentieth century excavations in South Etruria, Tuscany, Ager Faliscus and Latium Vetus, Francesco Mancinelli Scotti is a well-known key figure of those years. This excavator was often working outside the legal boundaries of archaeology and was therefore named “the wrecker of all Etruria”. Despite this negative judgment, the interest of this ‘archaeologist’ lies in his hectic activity on the field, which resulted in fundamental discoveries of pre-Roman Italy as well as in the creation of important collections in museums in Italy and abroad. Although the importance of his excavations has been often stressed in literature, we were still missing a modern comprehensive and critical analysis of his discoveries and of his biography. The volume has a twofold aim. On the one hand it wants to show who Francesco Mancinelli Scotti was and what the outcome of his research was; on the other hand it would like to foster a renewed reflection on the Cultural Heritage protection.
