Lo strano caso di Francesc Mancinelli Scotti, 2021

At different levels these two figures resemble each other. From the beginning of the excavations in the Ager Faliscus to tehe creation of the Museo di Villa Giulia to the fall of the main protagonists of these early years (such as Felice Barnabei) Cozza and Mancinelli Scotti certainly shared "elective affinities". Reading this interaction through the last decade of the 19th and first years of the 20th centuries sheds new light on the multifacted figure of Count Adolfo Cozza.

In addition to the numerous pottery items typical of the ceramic repertoire of the "Sasso culture", the "Monte Venere facies" has a particular class of impasto ware decorated with geometric motifs painted in brown; the sites that can be attributed to this facies suggest that its distribution is mainly along the Tiber Valley and the adiacent areas.
Some of the shapes and certain peculiarities of the painted decoration (especially the technique of "reserving") point to the Adriatic influence, and seem to be related to aspects of the Catignano culture - the context of the earliest Abruzzese painted pottery.
In view of the fact that the C14 dates obtained for the lower and middles levels at Monte Venere are grouped around the beginning respectively of the fifth and of the fourth millenium B.C., consideratio is given to some other absolute dates - in the fifth millenium - obtained from relevant samples taken from sites on both the Adriatic and Tyrrenian sides of the Italian peninsula.

The second part is an objective examination of the archaeological data, with considerations concerning the topography of the region during the final Bronze Age, the characteristics of the settlements, the necropolises and the hoards.
The third part concerns interpretative trends with an attempt at a chronological and cultural determination of the various archaeological testimonies as well as a brief examination of the problem of the relation between the Protovillanovan and Villanovan cultures.

The volume has a twofold aim. On the one hand it wants to show who Francesco Mancinelli Scotti was and what the outcome of his research was; on the other hand it would like to foster a renewed reflection on the Cultural Heritage protection.
