Germanicus and his large family (his wife Agrippina Major and nine children) embodied in Tiberius' Rome a new political model that looked beyond the boundaries of tradition and opened up to elements that had remained outside the scene of power until then. They bore the blood of the Julii and the Claudii, and this was an omen of a synthesis, which in the second part of the dynasty extended to include the partial but significant revival of the legacy of Mark Antony and some of his political choices. This book is the result of the International Conference held in the winter of 2019 in Perugia and it analyzes how a great figure, who did not succeed in fully consecrating himself, not only marked a significant part of the reign of the first successor of Augustus, but also the subsequent internal games of the first dynasty for the succession to power, whose results, certainly not by chance, saw the affirmation of his son, and then his brother and of his nephew.


Germanico e sua moglie Agrippina Maggiore, la sua numerosa famiglia (nove figli di cui ne morirono tre in tenera età) incarnarono nella Roma di Tiberio un modello politico nuovo, che guardava oltre i confini della tradizione e si apriva a elementi che erano rimasti al di fuori fino ad allora dalla scena del potere. Portavano il sangue dei Giulii e quello dei Claudii, e ciò era il presagio di una sintesi, che nella seconda parte della dinastia si estese fino a coinvolgere anche la parziale ma rilevante ripresa dell' eredità di Marco Antonio e di alcune linee della sua politica. Il volume, frutto del Convegno internazionale tenuto nell' inverno del 2019 a Perugia analizza in particolare come la figura di un grande personaggio, che non riuscì a consacrarsi appieno, improntò tuttavia di sé non solo una parte rilevante del regno del primo successore di Augusto, ma anche le successive partite interne alla prima dinastia per la successione al potere i cui esiti, non certo per un caso, videro l' affermazione consecutivamente del figlio, e poi del fratello e del nipote di Germanico.

Because archaeological databases contain unmanageably large numbers of records, users are still limited to targeted searches for specific information. Stimulating, creative browsing is rare at best. This has led to a search for new ways of selecting and composing data and new forms of representation, the goal being to introduce new ideas and research perspectives by linking monuments together in unconventional ways.
Unlike computer games, databases lack a narrative—hence the suggestion to reconstruct the biography of the objects and buildings in time, space and materiality as a means of increasing the user’s interest and attention; the results could be presented as a journey through time or a visit to a museum. In addition to faceted browsing, crowd science methods and different forms of visualization, there are also 4D animations and natural interaction in virtual spaces to be considered. As a case study, the author presents a current project whose goal is to publish 600 sculptures as 3D scans and to reconstruct historical exhibition contexts in the form of a virtual museum. The knowledge acquired in the process can serve as a basis for future approaches in which search queries are visualized in archaeological databases as fully virtual museums.

This paper discusses the archaeological evidence of an important Hellenistic funerary hypogeum recently discovered in Perugia (central Italy). The whole context dates from the beginning of the 3rd and the first half of the 1st century BC.; the hypogeum contained one sarcophagus, twenty-two cinerary urns of travertine and a rich tomb group. Two urns show a very rich high-relief, polychromous and gold-plated decoration, which depicts the myth of Oenomaus and a Centauromachia. The chronological sequence of the urns, together with the evidence of seventeen funerary titles, reveals the history, identity, culture and ideology of a local aristocratic family, in parallel with the economic and political effects of the expansion of Rome.

Este trabajo resume los resultados obtenidos mediante la investigación realizada a propósito de la excavacion arqueológica realizada en la mina y fundición romana de Los Puertos de Santa Bárbara (Cartagena) con el objetivo de ofrecer una visión de conjunto sobre las características físicas y espaciales de una instalación minero-metalúrgica menor del área de Carthago Nova.

More than forty years after the publication of the Elogia Tarquinensia", a group of unique Latin inscriptions, discovered in fragments in the years 1937-1937 (but not recomposed) in the excavations of the colossal temple, built in the centre of the city of Tarquinia and traditionally called "Ara della Regina", Mario Torelli comes back to these exceptional texts, which revealed the genealogical sequence of three great generals of Tarquinia, belonging to the Spurinas/Spurinnae, the most illustrious local family of the 5th -4th century BCE, who accomplished ecceptional military deeds against Syracuse in 415 BCE and against Rome in 358-351 BCE. A new interpretation of the Fasti of the priestly college of the LX haruspices, that had in the same sanctuary its seat, and the recent discovery of a dedication of M. Tarquitius Priscus, haruspex of the emperor Tiberius and famous author of haruspical books, made possible to identify Tinia-Jupiter as the god of the temple and the sanctuary as the place for the celebration of the Tarquinian military triumphs, for many aspects similar to the Capitoline temple in Rome. These brilliant discoveries are concluded by a new, fascinating interpretation of the figural program of the Orco Tomb, which the Author suggests to have been the sepulchre of the Spurinas family.

A più di quarant' anni dalla pubblicazione degli Elogia Tarquinensia" con la ricostruzione dello straordinario complesso di testi epigrafici latini, scoperti in frammenti (e non riconosciuti) nel corso degli scavi condotti negli anni ' 30 nel grandioso tempio dell'"Ara della Regina" al centro della città etrusca di Tarquinia, Mario Torelli ritorna su quei testi che hanno rivelato la sequenza genealogica di tre grandi generali tarquiniesi, appartenenti alla nobile famiglia degli Spurinas/Spurinnae, autori di eccezionali imprese militari contro Siracusa a fianco degli Ateniesi nel 415 a.C. e contro Roma nel 358-351 a.C. La rilettura dei Fasti del collegio del LX haruspices, che aveva lì stesso sede, e la recente scoperta della dedica di M. Tarquitius Priscus aruspice dell' imperatore Tiberio e famoso scrittore di testi di aruspicina, hanno reso possibile di riconoscere in Tinia-Giove la divinità titolare del culto e nella sede dei trionfi militari tarquiniesi la funzione del santuario, per moltissimi aspetti simile al Capitolium di Roma. Queste brillanti scoperte si affiancano alla nuova e affascinante rilettura del programma figurativo della Tomba dell' Orco, nella quale l' A. propone con buoni argomenti di riconoscere il sepolcro degli Spurinas.

Studienanfänger*innen in der Prähistorischen Archäologie sehen sich einer Vielzahl von materiellen und damit nichtschriftlichen Quellen gegenüber, die ihnen v.a. als visuelle bzw. bildliche Repräsentationen begegnen. Der Umgang mit diesen Quellen und der damit verbundene Aufbau visueller Kompetenzen muss zu Beginn des Studiums erst eingeübt werden, da aus dem schulischen Lernen Entsprechendes nicht vorausgesetzt werden kann. Im Zuge dessen müssen die Studierenden auch lernen, mit den nicht schriftlichen Quellen der Archäologie kritisch umzugehen.
Meist stellt das Studium jedoch nicht die erste Begegnung mit den typischen Quellen der Archäologien und deren Einsatz in der Vermittlung dar: Begegnungen haben etwa in Form von „Living-History“ Darbietungen, bei denen vergangene Zeiten mittels Darsteller*innen scheinbar authentisch in Szene gesetzt werden, bereits stattgefunden. Das damit verbundene optische, akustische und haptische Erleben ist oft für Geschichtsbilder verantwortlich, die die Studierenden weitgehend unreflektiert mit in das Studium bringen, und von denen die Studierenden ebenfalls lernen müssen, sie – im übertragenen Sinne – kritisch zu betrachten.
Dieser Beitrag geht der Frage nach, welchen Stellenwert kritisches Sehen im Archäologiestudium v.a. in der Studieneingangsphase einnimmt, und vergleicht hierzu die Studienfächer Prähistorische Archäologie und Klassische Archäologie miteinander.

"The early 20th century excavation of Banditella cemetery at Marsiliana d’Albegna (Manciano, GR) provided a list of the grave-goods placed into the burials. A close analysis of all the tombs’ contents enables us to point out some recurring grave-goods associations, which are presumably related to different hierarchical levels within the gens buried in the cemetery. The plan of the necropolis allows us to elaborate on the distribution of the identified grave-goods associations and the possible relationships between burials. They often appear to have been arranged in discernible patterns, such as in groups around chariot graves, or to have been disposed according to relationships between high-ranking male and female tombs and middle- and low-ranking tombs. Moreover, the finding of two nearly life-size anthropomorphic images within two burials (‘Circolo degli Avori’ and ‘Circolo della Fibula’) leads to some remarks on the interpretation of such statue-like objects, which are known from a very few examples from Vulci and its territory."

Die Texte dieses Bandes legen ausgehend von griechischen und römischen Kunstwerken dar, wie Leistungen des menschlichen Intellekts in unterschiedlichen Medien und zu verschiedenen Zeiten eine konkrete erlebbare Form erhalten haben und welche Wirkmacht sie gerade durch die Ausgestaltung entfalten konnten.
Antike Artefakte wie Statuen, Reliefs oder Gemälde gaben Vorstellungen und Wissen eine sinnlich erfahrbare Form, machten sie anschaulich, überzeugend und dauerhaft. Zugleich veränderten sie intellektuelle Leistungen, indem sie bestimmte Aspekte betonten, präzisierten oder neu kombinierten, andere aber reduzierten oder ganz wegließen. Das Buch untersucht ihre Entstehung als materielle Konkretisierung epistemischer Elemente und die medialen Bedingungen der Gestaltungsprozesse ebenso wie die Auswirkungen der gewordenen Form. Es legt den dafür entwickelten methodischen Ansatz des Internationalen Kollegs Morphomata dar und verbindet Fallstudien aus der Klassischen Archäologie mit Überlegungen zu zentralen Aspekten der materiellen Kultur.

Este volumen presenta una puesta al día de las ciudades hispanas más notables de los tres territorios provinciales: Lusitania, Baetica y Tarraconensis. Se trata de un análisis, esencialmente urbanístico, para conocer las últimas novedades de estas ciudades, algunas de ellas Patrimonio de la Humanidad en el presente.

Cualquier estudioso o interesado en el proceso de urbanización de Hispania puede encontrar respuesta en este libro, siendo así una útil herramienta para la arqueología romana. Este volumen, dado que es el resultado de un ciclo de conferencias, Ciudades Romanas de Hispania I, que tiene este curso 2021-2022 continuidad en otro nuevo ciclo con más ciudades, tendrá igualmente un segundo volumen.

The Roman fort at Iža lies in the location Leányvár, a short distance from the town of Komárno. The studied
collection comes exclusively from the excavations done by the Archaeological Institute of Slovak Academy of Sciences. In
total, 220 items of worked bone, antler and ivory were analysed. From the functional point of view they can be divided
into jewellery, parts of soldiers’ equipment, items used for textile and leather working, knife handles, musical instruments,
playing stones, furniture, writing items, half-finished products and other objects.

Le Terme del Nuotatore sono, al momento, le uniche terme ostiensi di cui è stato possibile ricostruire e datare l' intera sequenza costruttiva su base stratigrafica e sono anche le più antiche attualmente visibili e visitabili in Ostia. Lo studio esemplare di questo edificio, dall' analisi delle fasi alla ricostruzione, si presta a offrire uno schema metodologico di riferimento molto utile per la didattica dei corsi universitari in Beni Culturali, sia del primo che del secondo ciclo, ed è per questo motivo che si è pensato di riproporre una versione abbreviata e aggiornata della edizione integrale del 2013.


The Terme del Nuotatore is the only bath complex in Ostia of which it has been possible to reconstruct and date the entire building sequence on a stratigraphic basis thus far. The baths are also the oldest which are currently visible and may be visited at the site of Ostia Antica. The exhaustive study of this building, from the analysis of the phases to the reconstruction, lends itself to offer a methodological scheme of reference very useful for the teaching of university courses in Cultural Heritage, both of the first and second cycle, and it is for this reason that it was decided to propose an abbreviated and updated version of the full edition of 2013.
