This paper seeks to examine the impact of Internet memes and humorous viral content on power relations in South Asia using the case study of Pakistan. This paper examines the linguistic features of socio-political memes and its implications towards the society.
The essence of democracy lies in the possibility to express different views freely, challenge widely held believes publicly and criticize those in power. In highly developed democracies, the criticism of democratic processes through humor in public discourse, ranging from jokes and political cartoons to late-night comedy shows, has proven to be very powerful. Such power lies in engaging an apathetic public in democratic processes, as well as revealing hidden ideologies. Recently, new forms of criticism have been gradually emerging on social media and the Internet as forms of the grassroots political activism in the form of Internet memes. The aim of the paper is to uncover the extent to which political memes as forms of grassroots political activism can criticize the current political affairs and the state of the society in general and thus discern the political rhetorical and ideological goals. Specifically, applying conceptual integration theory, the paper analyzes the construction of meaning of humorous political memes as innovative ways of providing political commentaries on current political affairs. The meaning of political memes is constructed in conceptual blending as a basic cognitive mechanism. As it is claimed (Coulson and Pascual 2006, Coulson and Oakley 2006, Coulson 2006, Oakley and Coulson 2008) that blending can be used as a rhetorical tool influencing the audience to change the reality and even act upon it, the analysis of the construction of meaning of political memes as products of conceptual integration can reveal hidden ideologies in political discourse.

This paper explores the practice of posting static visual online memes on social media by political actors to convey messages that comment on the ruling party and its policies in Singapore. The paper presents a discussion based on semiotic analysis of popular memes and interviews with Singaporeans aged 18-24 to understand the ways in which circulation of memes influence the quality of political engagement. The results of the analysis suggest that the memes hold the potential for enhancing political engagement among a citizenry that is often seen as depoliticised and apathetic. Memes via their appearance on Facebook and other social media platforms socialise citizens to become critical of the status quo. Memes that attract youth’s attention follow general patterns of satirically commenting on the regime’s carefully articulated narratives of progress and efficiency and constructing subversive counter narratives infused with wit, sarcasm and parody.

With the emergence of the internet and various digital technologies, the consumption of the media has been transformed drastically. The viral and notorious Internet memes have become the fundamental unit of cultural transmission on the internet, especially on social media networks. Born into this Digital Age are the Digital Natives who have 24 hours access and are the “native speakers” of the digital language of the internet. While much is known about internet memes' effectiveness and role in the online sphere, there is a gap in knowledge in addressing its significance in the offline world through a concrete reception research. This qualitative study explores whether internet memes affect the offline lifestyle choices of the Indian digital natives and to what extent by conducting online structured interviews through questionnaire. The results show that digital natives understand memes in terms of their ability to produce humour and relatability, and as a digital vernacular. The findings illustrate and confirm the role of internet memes in influencing the offline lifestyle choices and the formation of cultural capital among the Indian digital natives.
