TITLE: The anti-racist encyclical of Pius XI hidden by Pius XII. ABSTRACT: In 1972, an American Catholic newspaper revealed the case of an encyclical by Pius XI against racism and anti-Semitism that was never published due to the pope's death in February 1939. His successor, Pius XII, fearful of reaction from Hitler and Mussolini, abandoned the project and decreed the secrecy surrounding the subject, which was only broken decades later. In 1995, two Belgian researchers published the full text of the frustrated encyclical in France, preceded by an extensive study. The book was translated into several languages and had a great international impact. Since then, new studies have deepened the knowledge of this case, which revived the controversy surrounding Pius XII's 'silence' on the persecution of the Jews by Nazism and fascism. RESUMO: Em 1972, um jornal católico americano revelou o caso de uma encíclica de Pio XI contra o racismo e o anti-semitismo que não chegou a ser publicada, devido à morte do papa em fevereiro de 1939. O seu sucessor, Pio XII, temeroso da reacção de Hitler e Mussolini, abandonou o projecto e decretou o segredo em torno do assunto, que só décadas depois foi quebrado. Em 1995, dois investigadores belgas publicaram em França o texto integral da frustrada encíclica, precedido de um largo estudo. O livro foi traduzido em várias línguas e teve grande impacto internacional. Desde então, novos estudos têm aprofundado o conhecimento desse caso, que avivou a polémica em torno dos 'silêncios' de Pio XII sobre a perseguição dos judeus pelo nazismo e fascismo. RÉSUMÉ: En 1972, un journal catholique américain révélait le cas d'une encyclique de Pie XI contre le racisme et l'antisémitisme qui n'avait jamais été publiée en raison de la mort du pape en février 1939. Son successeur, Pie XII, craignait la réaction d'Hitler et de Mussolini, abandonna le projet et décréta le secret entourant le sujet, qui ne fut rompu que des décennies plus tard. En 1995, deux chercheurs belges ont publié en France le texte intégral de l'encyclique frustrée, précédé d'une étude approfondie. Le livre a été traduit en plusieurs langues et a eu un grand retentissement international. Depuis, de nouvelles études ont approfondi la connaissance de cette affaire, qui a relancé la polémique autour du « silence » de Pie XII sur la persécution des Juifs par le nazisme et le fascisme.

In This Way We Came to Rome is a commentary on Paul’s travel implied in Acts 28:13–14. Paul arrived in the port city of Puteoli and stayed there for seven days before traveling to Rome. The authors aim to allow readers to travel the road Paul traveled and “see it through his eyes.” Well documented and richly illustrated, Thompson and Wilson succeed in their goal. Readers will follow a suggested route for a seven-day trip from the port city of Puteoli to Rome. Whether Paul took this exact route or not, this book will be an excellent primer for travel in the Roman world.

The villa of Blotkow, known by the panoramic view of Brest in 1657 by Erik Dahlbergh, also mentioned in 1659 in the illustrated publication of the rector at the Latin school in Hoorn (in the north of the Netherlands) Andreas Cellarius (c.1596–1665) as a royal palace with a garden featuring an Italian layout, is little known to researchers . The residence was built on the Bug River in the mid-16th century. It was surrounded by water on all sides. Two centuries later, it burned down in a fire, leaving no traces in the course of time. Modern methods to analyze historical space, old plans and cartographic maps by means of QGIS and AutoCad software, allowed an attempt to find the location of the Royal Residence. The article presents an analysis of plans, maps of Brest and Terespol, compares inventories from the AGAD and NHAB collections, comments on the presented historical sources, reveals the urban space composition around this bridge across the Bug River, which caused changes on both riverbanks in the early 16th century. While countless tons of European glass beads flowed into West Africa over the centuries, there is still relatively little information concerning what specific nations were importing over time. It was therefore of great interest to learn about two collections of beads surface collected at the site of a British slaving fort that operated on Bunce Island in the Sierra Leone estuary of coastal Sierra Leone from the late 17th to the early 19th century. Although it is impossible to assign the beads to a specific period in the fort's history, it is clear that they are of 18th-century origin and were part of the goods traded by the British. The present study describes the small but diverse collection of beads and places them in historical context.
