Digital media literacy is a critical component of civil society in the 21st Century. Recent political uprisings with citizen protest in Tunisia, Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries reflect a new level of mass mobilization using mobile and social media. These media are shaping domestic and foreign political agendas, affect our privacy and security, and are changing the nature of individual autonomy and freedom. We have entered an information era in which the teaching and learning of these media should be critically embedded in the educational program, with careful consideration given to ethical, privacy, and security concerns. The author addresses important considerations and present strategies for mastering the use of new media using learner centered approaches.

MOOC Talk: A Connectivist Dialogue About Our Metaliteracy MOOC Experience2015 •
In the fall of 2013, SUNY Empire State College and the University at Albany offered a collaborative massive open online course (MOOC) about metaliteracy (see http://metaliteracy. cdlprojects.com). This project emerged from the work of Tom Mackey and Trudi Jacobson to develop a metaliteracy model that promotes collaboration and participation in today’s interactive, mobile and social media environments. After considering other platforms for the MOOC such as Coursera and Canvas Network, this particular open environment was developed using the original connectivist format inspired by the early innovators of this movement including Dave Cormier, George Siemens and Stephen Downes. This collaborative essay is a connectivist dialogue among several key facilitators of Metaliteracy MOOC.

Beyond that quibble, I found the book thought provoking from a theoretical perspective, powerful as a tool for the promotion of information literacy, and informative as a set of case studies. I found some of the contributions (the examples of reusable learning objects, information literate avatars and working outside the org chart) less useful, too generic, or not relevant to our own learning environment.

This TOOLKIT, aimed at teachers and educators, includes five units with a series of educational activities about the topics and problems already dealt with in both the online game and the theatre plays. These activities aim at developing an increased awareness among young people of both the risks and opportunities of digital media and online communication.
The relevance of financial literacy education (FLE) in a remote Canadian First Nation community was explored after a generic FLE workshop failed to gain traction. To understand the relevance of FLE in the Community, group interviews, a Community Summit and field notes were used as sources of evidence. During the analysis phase practice theory was use to examine the ‘sayings’, ‘doings’ and ‘relatings’ in a financial context. Next, we examined the possibilities of what can be achieved in the Community and find that site based and Community developed FLE was desired. Reported in this paper are the planning and initiating stages of site based education that occurred.
