Abstract: This contribution focuses on Cameroonian traders and migrants based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in particular the city of Dubai. It outlines their economic, spatial, and social imprint on Dubai's cityscape, and discusses their transnational orientation. In recent years, Dubai has attracted large numbers of African traders and labor migrants who contribute significantly to the town's commercial development and social life. The streets of Deira, Dubai's historical business district, are populated by people from all over the world, including merchants from different parts of Africa. Many Cameroonian men and women who reside in Dubai are engaged in the so-called "cargo" business, acting as intermediaries to these merchants and facilitating their accommodation, purchases, and transport of acquisitions back to Africa. They tend to organize their lives around economic constraints and the caprice of the UAE immigration system. At the same time, they struggle to create social spaces of mutual comfort and support, for example in the context of shared housing ("bed space"), church congregations or aid and saving groups. With their activities, they contribute to the global and multicultural character of Dubai as well as to establishing transnational connections between Africa and the Arab Gulf.

(EN) This contribution sheds light on a little-studied dimension of the perceptions, strategies and tactics deployed by the actors confronted with the articulation between security and migration in Africa, specifically around the case of Central and West African nationals trying to cross the Moroccan-Spanish border. The article explores, from an ethnographic point of view, how the masculinities and femininities of racialized migrants are reconfigured at the gates of the enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. Based on long-term fieldwork carried out between 2015 and 2017, it presents several figures of migrant men in this specific space, the “barrier jumpers” and the “chairman”, while showing, in mirror image, the articulation of these masculinities to the construction of particular feminities. Studying the conditions of production and performance of these (more or less) ephemeral social positions of gender means undertaking a much more detailed understanding of the current consequences of migration policies and what they generate in terms of racist, sexist and sexual violence.
