Starting from 1 September 2015, the government of Malaysia has launched a waste separation program where households in Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Pahang, Perlis and Kedah have to separate their solid waste according to its composition. However, after one year of implementation, the participation of households in this program is still low. Thus, this paper reviews the barriers of solid waste separation at source based on the results gained from previous researches that have been conducted around the world. It was identified from the review that the barriers could be divided into five (5) main categories namely facility, attitude, knowledge, commitment and enforcement. These barriers could be among the issues that hindering total participation of Malaysian society in the country’s solid waste separation program. Further research should be conducted to identify which of these barriers that has contributed most to the poor participation of Malaysian society...

An Analysis of Households" Attitudes towards Solid Waste Segregation and Recycling Practices in Bandar Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 2020
Malaysia is facing daunting challenges in relation to households" solid waste management due to an increase in population and economic activities, urbanisation and infrastructural development. Like other developing countries, the quantity of solid waste generated in urban areas in Malaysia is increasing at an alarming rate, with the amount generated from households alone increasing at the rate of 3% yearly. The aim of this study was to analyse the households" attitude and practice towards solid waste segregation and recycling. The study presented key findings of a quantitative survey distributed among 384 households" in Bandar Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur. A response rate of 79.68%, which is 306 of the total questionnaire administered were received and analysed. The result revealed that households" in Bandar Tun Razak had a positive attitude and awareness towards solid waste segregation and recycling. However, small numbers of the respondents, 7.5% and 9.2% respectively, practiced solid waste segregation and recycling. The result also proved that there is a significant positive relationship between households" income and size to the quantity of solid waste they generate daily in Bandar Tun Razak. The outcome of the study can help to guide the local authority and policy makers in designing or formulating policies that would encourage households to practice solid waste segregation at source for recycling.

Malaysia is faced with daunting challenges relating to household waste segregation. Due to an increase in population, economic growth, enforcement, infrastructure, public attitude, awareness and participation among others, source segregation is considered a crucial issue in Malaysia, particularly in urban settings. This paper presents the key findings of the quantitative (questionnaire) survey administered among 235 households in Kuching South City and qualitative (interview) survey with the Natural Resource & Environmental Board (NREB) and Kuching South City Council. This survey attempts to identify the limiting and motivating factors on the part of households to waste segregation. The result shows that age, sex, race and education is insignificant towards waste segregation. The result also shows a significant difference between waste segregators and non-waste separators on their level of perception towards implementation of laws for source segregation. Result also shows that the e...

Many people are now expressing their increased concern about serious environmental destruction as a result of human irresponsible environmental behaviour. The aim of this paper is to explore current scenarios of intention to practise solid waste segregation-at-source between households in Selangor. A total of 400 respondents in Selangor who aged 18 and above were employed to respond to bilingual research questionnaires. The results of the descriptive investigation indicated that plastic was the most major solid waste material segregated daily among the respondents. The majority of Selangor citizens surveyed had heard about and strongly supported this environmental policy. Approximately half of the sample agreed that the policy of solid waste segregation-at-source was extremely important in addressing serious negative global environmental issues. Unfortunately, due to a lack of awareness as well as insufficient technologies and facilities in their housing areas, one-fifth of the respondents had never intended to practise solid waste segregation-at-source in their daily lives. By realising ongoing challenges in the longterm implementation of solid waste segregation-at-source in Malaysia, this current research therefore provides an essential opportunity to explore the importance of having the intention to practise solid waste segregation-at-source among Malaysian citizens and of enriching existing local literature.

One of the main contentious recycling issues in Malaysia is household solid waste management. With solid waste buildup and bottlenecks reaching its limit at landfills, local councils face uphill tasks to manage it. Solid source waste separation (SWS) for households was first officially enforced across eight states in Malaysia on 1 June 2016. However, Selangor has yet to enforce this system and is left to selected local councils to embark on pilot projects. It has been iterated that Selangor which has the largest population in Malaysia should adopt the law on mandatory SWS for households as it is already facing a garbage disposal crisis. Previous studies have been documented on recycling behavior but few delve into SWS. This paper examines household behavior towards SWS intention at Shah Alam. Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior, influences of attitude (ATT), subjective norms (SN) and perceived behavior control (PBC) towards SWS were determined. Methodology utilized interviews wi...

Result also shows that the ease of access to facilities and the methods of collection are the major limiting factors preventing households from waste segregation in Kuching South City.

Recycling and source separation (R&SS) are believed to have been the first attempt to minimise waste. This research adopted mixed methods that followed sequential quantitative then qualitative data collection, combining questionnaire surveys from 100 households, semi-structured interviews, and participatory observations to study the human dimension of waste generation and management. Scoring Assessment (with modified Bloom’s Cut Off point) indicated that households had moderate knowledge and positive attitudes yet poor behaviour, and these three components indicated no linear associations, tested using Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient. However, age group, marital status, educational level and living duration showed statistical significance with households’ participation in source separation through Chi-Square Test. Meanwhile, observation data showed that waste management mechanisms and environment had inefficiently supported households’ participation in R&SS practices (external factors: poor accessibility to services, lack of tangible incentives, and absence of restriction in consumption). Elicited data indicated that a satisfactory level of intentions, knowledge, and willingness, together with good habit and quality persuasion (internal factors), were required to drive good behaviour. Subsequently, a series of recommendations were formulated to promote gradual yet solid transformation of the waste management system, tapping on existing initiatives by considering additional parameters upon the gap in households’ knowledge, attitude, and behaviour.

This paper reviews the current practice and challenges of community participation on waste segregation program in Jasin Malacca since 2015-2017. The Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing (Act 672) which came into force on 1st September 2011, is Governments’ effort to provide a systematic, coordinated, effective and efficient solid waste management system in Malaysia including Malacca.. Since then, there has been significance increase on the amount recycle waste collected. However, the community participation on solid waste segregation and recycling program still at low level due to lack of awareness, attitude and exposure on the advantages of recycling in the long term. Thirty preliminary questionnaires were distributed randomly at resident’s housing area in Jasin and analysed through Average Index (AI) method. The result obtained shows the current challenges of the community in performing the waste segregation at source. From the result, further study will be conducted to dis...

Background Poor waste disposal practices hamper the progress towards an integrated solid waste management in households. Knowledge of current practices and perception of household solid waste management is necessary for accurate decision making in the move towards a more sustainable approach. This study investigates the household waste practices and perceptions about waste management in Panji, one of the sub-districts in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia. Methods A stratified random sampling technique using a cross-sectional survey questionnaire was used to collect data. A total of 338 households were interviewed in the survey and data were analyzed using SPSS. Chi-square goodness of fit test was used to determine the relationships between categorical variables, whereas Chi-square bivariate correlation test was performed to observe the correlation between the perceptions of waste segregation with socio-demographic background of the respondents. The correlation between perception of res...
