Floral traits may either facilitate or constrain the gathering of food resources by certain animals. We therefore sought here to define the floral specialization levels of 19 plant species visited by foraging insects, based on their floral attributes and on the behaviors of their respective insect visitors. Based on those two criteria the degree of specialization of each plant-pollinator system was determined. The species studied had eight types of flowers (open, gullet, capitulum, opened with oil-secreting glands, opened with poricidal anthers, brush, tubular, and transition between open and deep polypetalous), and showed a continuum of pollination systems, from the more specialized levels to the most generalized. The most specialized species were visited predominantly by functional group of efficient pollinators, whereas the most generalist species received visitors of four or five functional groups, but they did not act as efficient pollinators. Plants are a component of biodiversity and support life system on earth. Exploration of plant species is important to aquire knowledge on plant biodiversity and their distribution. This study documents floral species in the Institute of Forestry, Pokhara Campus, Nepal. The Campus is one of the academic institutions for producing forestry graduates. The plant species were listed from 2020 to the first half of the year 2021 by walking along the accessible routes inside the Campus. A total of 331 species of plants from 276 genera and 99 families were recorded. Fabaceae family represented the maximum number of plant species (n=26) followed by Asteraceae (n=25) and Poaceae (n=21). 43% of the total species recorded were herbs. 31% of the total species were trees. 16 species were invasive alien plant species (IAPS) and four species are listed under Appendix-II of CITES.
The present paper describes the floral diversity of the Tolipir National Park to develop the base line information about species composition and community structure. Survey of the floral diversity of that area was conducted in summer 2012. According to this survey, 35 tree species, 19 shrubs, 3 epiphytes, 4 climbers, 75 herbs, 10 ferns, 1 moss and 1 lichen species were recorded. The present results suggested a relatively long list of plant species (158) for an area of 50 Km 2 , yet such a diversity can be expected under diversity in the physical conditions and hence the associated habitat conditions, i.e., variation in altitudes (1,367 – 2,617 m asl.), diversity in land exploitation pattern (arable terrace agriculture interspersed with the wild forested vegetation and ecotone effect), topographic diversity (hill slopes and plain hill tops having grasslands, and ravines with different degree of moisture conditions) and moisture conditions (deeper ravines with thick forested vegetation cover, hardly receiving the sun light, to open mountain ridges). The study suggested that the park area was rich in floral diversity, which needed rapid conservation measures. In future, further detailed studies can add some other rare species into this list.
