19th-Century British Philosophy

Through a reflection on the notions of form and content originating from Kant’s philosophy, this work offers a new interpretation of British idealism. Its starting point consists in recognizing the heterodox character of the idealist doctrines developed in the United Kingdom as a result of the interpretations of the philosophies of Kant and Hegel. In order to achieve this goal, the influence of Kant’s philosophy on the metaphysical proposals of the philosophers on the other side of the English Channel is first discussed. The notions of form and content represent the gateway to criticism, and allow reasoning about the new concepts of experience and object that were proposed in the first Critique. Through to the analysis of Bradley’s logical doctrine of judgment (which is compared to the concept of existence in Kantian philosophy), and of McTaggart’s famous argument about the unreality of time (vastly different from the definitions of the Transcendental Aesthetic), the British idealists’ approach is questioned, for it does not meet Kant’s presuppositions and requirements. This conclusion is also endorsed by the discussion of Stirling’s criticism to transcendental philosophy. However, since Hegel climbed the ladder of critical philosophy, raising his discourse to a level defined as “meta-transcendental”, the suspension of criticism brings to the suspension of Hegelianism as well. The notions of form and content no longer lay in the sphere of transcendental subjectivity: the method of logic in its proceedings, i.e., its immanent connection and necessity as science, is the identity of form and content in the element of pure thought. The analysis shows that the British idealists do not comprehend the significance of Hegel’s absolute philosophy: not only do they lower it to a subjective method, but they also reformulate the principles of dialectic, so that pure thought remains subordinate to the concept of being. Since the genesis of analytical philosophy is commonly regarded as a reaction against idealism, the relevance of these considerations is not limited to their mere historical interest: by refuting the arguments of the German philosophers, analytic philosophy does not undermine those of the British idealists—and vice versa.

For this year’s Virtual Issue, our guest editor, Omar W. Nasim, has collected together papers from the Aristotelian Society archives that represent a substantial part of a dispute that contributed to the emergence of analytic philosophy in Britain at the turn of the 20th Century. The dispute was primarily concerned with the problem of the external world – the nature of the sensible objects of perception, and how they relate to physical things and the perceiving subject. The participants in this controversy contested the nature of the appearance-reality distinction, whether it is it is possible for a thing to instantiate contrary sensible qualities at the same place and time, the distinction between presentation and representation, the nature of knowledge by acquaintance, and the nature of sense-data – e.g., whether sense-data are psychical or physical, whether they persist unperceived, and how they give rise to knowledge of the external world.

I argue that, from his early "Studies in the History of the Renaissance" to his late essays on Hellenic culture and philosophy, Walter Pater's work sets forth an original theory of intersubjectivity. This theory is grounded in close analysis of what we might call "scenes of contact" in the domain of art. Pater's concepts of "touch," "impress," and "the scene of human experience" show how the artwork participates in broader relationships that make social existence possible. The affinity of these concepts to contemporaneous theories of lived experience, expression and understanding by Wilhelm Dilthey shows Pater's participation in an emerging intellectual paradigm. Taken together, these readings offer an alternative to accounts of Pater as a materialist, an impressionist, or a hedonist. Instead, his work should be understood as part of a broader theoretical inquiry of his generation into the fundamental nature of experience.

[THIS IS A DRAFT VERSION OF A PAPER FORTHCOMING IN *THE HAZLITT REVIEW*] Uttara Natarajan describes William Hazlitt (1778-1830) as ‘a proponent of what we must call British idealism’. In this paper I address two main questions. First, to what extent does it make sense to say that Hazlitt was a philosophical idealist? Second, given that Hazlitt plainly can be interpreted in other ways, why does it matter whether he was an idealist? To answer these questions, I first explain why Hazlitt is so difficult to classify and how we might understand the terms ‘idealism’ and ‘idealist’. Next I argue that the resemblance between Hazlitt’s practical philosophy and Kant’s is weaker than some interpreters have suggested, though it helps explain the former’s moral psychology. I then discuss the idealist interpretation of Hazlitt’s theoretical philosophy, showing that it shares certain key features with Kant’s and Berkeley’s, though it differs from both in its assumptions and its conclusions. What Hazlitt takes from idealism, I argue, is a conception of experience partly constituted by language. In the final section, I suggest that the idealist reading of Hazlitt is valuable as an exercise in intellectual history, serving as a corrective to long-standing misconceptions about idealism and its relation to empiricism in the early nineteenth century.

The relationship between representative democracy and conflict in John Stuart Mill’s political philosophy has been interpreted in very different ways. While some scholars claim that Millian democracy is incompatible with political conflict, others identify in Mill a radical political agonism that would offer a non-consensual model of deliberative democracy. This paper argues that neither of these views is exactly accurate: although he highlights the centrality of conflict in political life, Mill believes that democratic deliberation presupposes a minimal level of consensus regarding the formal value of democracy’s basic principles, viz. the principles of individual freedom and equality. Initially, I reconstruct the relationship between conflict and consensus in Mill’s conception of representative democracy. Next, I investigate Mill's association of representation and advocacy and show that his encomium on political conflict was influenced by Guizot’s work. Finally, I explain how a democratic debate riven with conflict is conducive to individual freedom.

In the history of thought and the history of philosophy, distributive justice is a key issue to be concerned, discussed, and researched not only for thinkers but also for the needs of each citizen. This is also one of the basic goals in the cause of building socialism in Vietnam today: “rich people, strong country, democracy, justice, and civilization”. In this article, the author focuses on presenting the basic contents of the conception of John Stuart Mill (1806 - 1873) on distributive justice.

In this article, we argue that John Henry Newman was right to think that our passional nature can play a legitimate epistemic role. First, we unpack the standard objection to Newman’s understanding of the relationship between our passional nature and the evidential basis of faith. Second, we argue that the standard objection to Newman operates with a narrow definition of evidence. After challenging this notion, we then offer a broader and more humane understanding of evidence. Third, we survey recent scholarship arguing that emotions, a key aspect of our passional nature, are cognitive. In this light, they plausibly have a proper epistemic role. Fourth, we defend Newman’s reliance on the passional nature in epistemic matters by showing how reasonable it is in light of this recent work on evidence and the nature of emotions. Newman’s insistence that the formation of a right state of heart and mind is crucial for epistemic success is far from untenable.

This essay considers the use of “serial thinking”—an approach to representation and cognition that emphasizes repetition, enumeration, and aggregation—in the work of Thomas Hardy. Examining his first novel, Desperate Remedies (1871), it connects Hardy's approaches to serial thinking with the discourse of Victorian logic (especially the work of John Venn) and links this early sensation novel to Hardy's later output. Serial representation operates in two modes in Hardy: one material, tactile, and affective (figuring long-run processes of wear, attrition, and change); the other discrete, rational, and numerical (depicting patterns of counting and aggregation). Serial thinking also speaks to the problematic generic identity of Desperate Remedies in Hardy's oeuvre and to broader difficulties of genre designation through its historical and formal relation to problems in inductive logic. The novel enacts in its figures for class thinking a generic identity that is by turns stable and dynamic. Hardy's intuitions about serial and class thinking, which draw on nineteenth-century logic's decision problems and its discourse of “sets” and “classes” and their “members,” can be thus linked to questions of genre writ large. The essay concludes by connecting nineteenth-century images for the bounding and blurring of classes to similar figures in recent studies of genre. Considering the deeper historical relationship between generic thinking and the areas of logic that undergird later approaches to genre—both theoretical accounts and empirical studies, often using digital tools—can show how generic dynamism demands methods of reading that collaborate along different explanatory axes.

Feeling and Philosophy: The Affective Paradigm Reconsidered (Early 19th – Early 20th Centuries)

Cet article propose une lecture du premier moment, généralement négligé par les commentateurs, des « Quelques mots sur la non-intervention » de John Stuart Mill (1859). Il montre que loin qu’on puisse considérer ces pages comme l’apologie – quelque peu naïve – de la politique extérieure anglaise, il faut au contraire prendre au sérieux les propositions de leur auteur concernant l’opinion publique et la nécessité, pour les diplomates, de réformer leur langage. Il n’est ainsi possible de comprendre les visées émancipatrices de John Stuart Mill dans ce texte, qu’en saisissant quelles sont pour lui la nature de l’opinion publique et son rôle dans la fondation d’un « principe de non-intervention » efficace. Le retour aux textes de ses prédécesseurs, Bentham et James Mill, ont alors pour fonction d’éclairer le rôle nouveau et décisif de « l’esprit public » dans les relations internationales tel qu’il apparaît ici.

La discusión del concepto kantiano de existencia llevada a cabo por Hegel en la Ciencia de la lógica representa el intento de fundamentar una nueva lógica científica que, basándose en el método dialéctico, demuestre la coincidencia de forma y contenido, del pensamiento y del ser. El ensayo compara esta posición con el punto de vista del neohegeliano Bradley, quien discute el mismo concepto para desarrollar una doctrina completamente diferente: un monismo absoluto en el cual existir significa «existir como apariencia» y donde el pensamiento puro se transforma en una quimera. El análisis se transforma entonces en la pregunta: «¿Puede Bradley ser considerado auténticamente hegeliano?», cuya respuesta es negativa.

Pouca atenção é dada ao sistema de lógica de John Stuart Mill, que se destaca por seu caráter empirista radical. Nele, a indução e seus métodos são considerados os únicos elementos que nos permitem alcançar conhecimento genuíno. Assim, levanta-se a questão sobre o que motivou o autor a escrever tão radical obra. Neste artigo, queremos demonstrar, ao tecer um recorte histórico-filosófico, como certos pressupostos revelam um vínculo íntimo entre a lógica e o projeto filosófico maior do autor. Iniciaremos com os antecedentes que reanimaram o debate acerca da possibilidade de uma lógica indutiva unificada no século XIX britânico, sobretudo pela ótica de dois movimentos antagônicos: os defensores da lógica aristotélica e os reformadores dos métodos indutivos baconianos. Em seguida, vincularemos tal panorama aos pressupostos de Mill, realçando a influência da ética utilitarista e da psicologia associacionista. Por fim, evidenciaremos como esse vínculo explica a motivação de Mill em escrever uma lógica indutiva radical.

Argumentaire : Dans les études en histoire de la philosophie et historiographie philosophique au 20e siècle, la question de la méthode de recherche, des
modèles théoriques, des critères pour la définition d’une période  (l’antiquité, le moyen âge, l’âge classique, la philosophie postcartésienne, le rationalisme,
l’empirisme, etc.), ainsi que celle des limites et des enjeux intrinsèques et irréductibles d’une époque à une autre époque de la philosophie, ont été très
débattues. Bien que les historiens de la philosophie aient produit plusieurs ouvrages à ce sujet, sous l’impulsion de la nouvelle historiographie de langue
anglaise concernant la recherche et la systématisation de leur tradition au 20e siècle, le débat au sujet des fondements de la recherche en histoire de la
philosophie connaît aujourd’hui un regain d’intérêt.
C’est le cas notamment de la définition et des limites de la philosophie moderne à l’âge classique (early modern philosophy) qui a fait l’objet d’études
pendant ces dernières années.

Toutefois, l’étude d’un point de vue méthodologique de la période de la philosophie qui va de Kant au début du 20e siècle n’a pas connu la même fortune
critique. Et pourtant il s’agit d’une période très riche (Kant, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, Marx, Comte, Pierce, James, Kierkegaard, Mill, Brentano, Nietzsche, Bergson, …) qui a vu    aussi bien la naissance des sciences humaines (la psychologie, la sociologie, l’anthropologie) que l’enracinement de la philosophie dans les langues et les traditions
nationales (on parle aujourd’hui de philosophie française, philosophie anglo-saxonne, philosophie allemande, comme des traditions unitaires, tandis que,
avant le 19e siècle, les diverses traditions  philosophiques n’étaient pas perçues et catégorisées selon des frontières géopolitiques mais plutôt selon dés écoles
de pensée). En outre, la philosophie aux États-Unis travaille au 19e siècle à la fondation de toute une nouvelle tradition, i.e. le pragmatisme et le
transcendentalisme (Royce, Peirce, James, Emerson, Thoreau), qui fait pour la première fois son entrée dans l’histoire de l’Occident.

La philosophie est, en revanche, systématisée au sein des universités (Humboldt, Cousin) et, après ce siècle, il sera très difficile de trouver des penseurs
influents dans le monde académique hors des institutions universitaires.
Le 19e siècle est aussi le siècle de l’histoire de la philosophie comme discipline autonome ; commencée par Brucker dans le 18e siècle, l’approche historique
à l’étude de la philosophie se perfectionne dans le siècle suivant grâce à l’école historique allemande (Ranke, Dilthey, Troeltsch, Droysen), jusqu’à devenir
un courant philosophique : l’historicisme. D’ailleurs, c’est au sein de ce siècle que par opposition ou en continuité, les deux courants majeurs du 20e siècle
surgissent : la phénoménologie et la philosophie analytique. Quel est leur rapport avec la pensée qui les a précédées ? 

Le 19e siècle est donc un siècle riche et complexe : mérite-t-il d’être étudié de manière immanente et selon des critères internes ?
Quand au juste peut-on fixer le début et la fin de ce siècle de la philosophie ? Quel sont ses critères d’identité, d’individuation et d’unité ?

Dans cet esprit, le colloque international La philosophie au XIXe siècle : Sa définition et ses critères d’étude / Defining Late Modern Philosophy: Identity and
Criteria –  organisé en synergie avec TRAVERSES – Unité de Recherches Transdisciplinaires de  l’Université de Liège,  le Fonds National de la Recherche
Scientifique, le groupe de contact FNRS « Histoire de la philosophie et historiographie philosophique », l’Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon
(projet BATTMAN - The Battle for the science of man, 1800-1867, Labex COMOD), qui se tiendra a l’Université de Liège (12-13 décembre 2017), en réunissant
des chercheurs internationaux, issus principalement  de l’histoire de la philosophie et des sciences humaines, se proposera de répondre à un certain nombre
de questions :

            1)  Y a-t-il des phénomènes en philosophie qui se produisent seulement au sein du 19e siècle ?
            2) Dans quelle mesure la philosophie devient-elle une question nationale et d’identité collective ?
            3)  Dans quelle mesure la langue nationale joue-t-elle un rôle dans la nationalisation de la philosophie ?
                Quel est le rapport entre la philosophie et la littérature du XIXe  siècle ?
            4)  Pendant l’âge classique, les Modernes ont la tendance et le goût à se démarquer des Anciens ; au 19e siècle, par contre, il y a, semble-t-il, un mouvement
                  opposé de « retour »  aux origines (mythiques), respectivement les Grecs dans le milieu protestants et le Moyen Âge dans le milieu catholique. 
                Quel est le rapport que, pendant ce siècle, la philosophie a avec son passé ?
          5)  Ouverture et intérêt vers les philosophies non-Occidentales. Comparaison ou syncrétisme ?
          6)  Quel est le  rapport entre la philosophie, les sciences humaines et l’industrialisation naissante ?
          7)  La philosophie et la découverte de l’autre : le colonialisme et l’internationalisation de la philosophie. Quel rapport ?

Es ist zwar gut bekannt, daß kein Geringerer als Samuel Taylor Coleridge zu denjenigen gehörte, die Schel-ling intensiv rezipierten und als kongenial betrachteten. Doch gibt es viel mehr zu berichten-eben das unternimmt Giles Whiteley in seinem instrukti-ven Buch. Durchaus inspiriert von Derrida, geht Whiteley zunächst auf Coleridge ein und diskutiert, wie dieser in seiner Biographia literaria auf Schelling zu sprechen kommt, nämlich gleichsam schrittweise und partiell verhüllend und irgendwie unheimlich-was dann im Anschluß an Freud und Derrida zu den üblichen Ausführungen darüber führt. 1 Das kann man für übertrieben halten, aber es macht doch deutlich, daß man sich auf die Suche nach verborge-nen Spuren machen muß, wenn man dem Einfluß Schellings in Großbritan-nien nachgehen will. Denn obwohl verschiedene Engländer wie Henry Crabb Robinson oder John Carlyle, der Bruder von Thomas, bei Schelling Vorlesungen hörten, bedeutete dies doch nicht, daß sie selbst unmittelbar etwas darüber publiziert hätten.
