Interpersonal relations refer to an intelligence and competence that enable the establishment and maintenance of mutually satisfying relationships with a variety of people across diverse situations. Academic achievement refers to satisfactory learner performance as shown by grades attained in course-work, tests, continuous assessment and end-of-semester examinations. The study interrogated the relationship between interpersonal relations (IR) and academic achievement (AA) among university upgrading (Grade V) teacher students in Ugandan universities. Using a quantitative sample of 473 and a qualitative sample of 75 upgrading Grade V teacher-students from Makerere University and Uganda Christian University (UCU), a cross-sectional survey and interview were carried out. The results showed that IR was positively and significantly related to subjective AA (r = .23, p < .001). However, it was not significantly related to objective AA – CGPA (r = .04, p > .05) thus, supporting the hy...

The problems of cash flow in the construction industry is a common phenomenon. It happens anywhere and Malaysia is no exception. The main purpose of this research is to study the effectiveness of CIPAA by investigating whether it has eased the problems of cash flow in the construction industry. Since construction industry plays a pivotal role in national economic, its problems need to be rectified as soon as possible. CIPAA is enacted, thereby. However, whether CIPAA has served its purpose remains a question. This study intends to look into this question. A questionnaire survey was conducted to solicit the opinions or feedbacks from main contractors, consultant QS and subcontractors. 35 respondents took part in the survey. This study found that cash flow has become smoother since CIPAA is introduced. However, conditional payment and problem of timeliness in paying remain. Also, most of the construction industry players are satisfied with the duration of CIPAA. Furthermore, CIPAA is considered as a relatively affordable and speedy dispute resolution mechanism when compared to arbitration or litigation, given a rating of 4 out of 5, overall. Issues on breach of natural justice and jurisdiction problems of adjudicators are found to be the concern of the industry players. It is also learnt that the construction industry stakeholders think that it is fair to have adjudication reply with no further ground for respondent to response to that reply. The power to award adjudication cost given to adjudicator is seen as a deterrent towards CIPAA, especially to small and medium-sized company. Extension of coverage of CIPAA to oral and “partly oral, partly written” construction contracts and adjudication review are sought after.

This qualitative study on the Finnish basic education curriculum (2016) had two goals. First, to survey the origins of first two new curriculum competences: 1) thinking and learning to learn, and, 2) cultural competences. Second, to analyse the local curricular implementation and comprehension in a rapid socio-cultural change. To reveal the possible data trends, two research questions were addressed: 1. What was the background of first two 2016 transversal core competencies? 2. How were those competencies implemented into a local curriculum 2016-19? The Data included basic education curricula (1985-2016), and a local curriculum. Relevant legislation, official information (e.g. PISA), parental feedback, and a questionnaire to an anonymous implementing principal comprised the curricular data. The Data triangulation was completed with a wide range of educational, cultural and ideological research. Regarding ethics, the individual sources and educational provider remained anonymous. Fin...

English is now the most frequently used language worldwide. In academia, English has become “a hyper central language” millions of students are learning for various reasons. As such, pedagogists, academicians, and language teachers seek new tools and teaching methods to help English language learners reach high proficiency levels. The use of drama as a teaching/learning tool in English language classrooms is one proposed method, justifying this study to investigate the effects of teaching English language through drama, thus deciphering the advantages of this experience and possible challenges it may pose. Data was gathered via an English language test and classroom observations. Results showed that the use of drama develops participants’ language skills, especially the communicative ones such as interactions and conversations, and yields higher proficiency levels as it motivates them to become more engaged in the learning process. These participants also displayed more responsibili...

This research was aimed at fostering students’ idea generating abilities via the implementation of pre-writing strategies. The study adopted an action research design. The first phase involved problem identification and causes of the problems through focus group discussion and classroom observation. After identifying the challenges, systematically planned actions were implemented for eight successive weeks. During the intervention phase, awareness was created among the students on the importance of using idea-generating strategies before starting to write a text. As a result, four idea-generating strategies were employed; brainstorming, clustering, free-writing and questioning. Finally, the results of the actions taken were evaluated via observation, questionnaire, and focus group discussion. The findings reveal that the students showed interest in using idea-generating strategies, and the strategies used helped them to come up with adequate ideas in order to develop a text. The str...

The aim of the study was to investigate the extent of engagement, inclusion and influence of engagement on inclusion of Students with Disabilities (SWDs) in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Convergent Parallel Mixed research design was employed though only quantitative data presentation, interpretation and discussion was considered in this paper. Student Engagement Scale (SES) and College Student Experience Questionnaire (CSEQ) were used to collect data. Reliability and validity of the instruments was scrutinized properly. For example, pilot study of the instruments was undertaken involving 30 SWDs who were attending their education at Mekelle University. Target population were 773 SWDs from 5 HEIs in the country, yet through Taro (1967) stratified proportionate random sampling technique (deaf, blind and physical impairment strata) 264 SWDs were determined to be sample populations. The data collected by the two questionnaire were analyzed by using one-sample t-test and multiple...

Using drama as an awareness creation tool, this study examined the influence of gender, age, class, socio-economic status, parent’s level of education and religion on adolescents’ attitude towards schooling. A total of 300 (150 JSS and 150 SS2) students (males=153; females=147) randomly selected from six coeducational secondary schools in Ibadan constituted the sample for the study. The adopted Attitude toward Education Scale by Glassey (1945) and Socio-economic Status Scale by Salami (2015)were used to collect the data. The results indicated that positivesignificant relationship existed between the adolescents’ attitude towards schooling and gender, age, socioeconomic status, parent’s (father’s) level of education and religion but not with classwhich is negative. The results indicate the need to include the students’ parental and personal-social factors when counselling students through drama and performances that show students and parents’ negative attitude toward schooling.
