Το Ευρωπαϊκό αλλά και το Ελληνικό Δίκαιο τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες έχουν καθορίσει ένα νομικό πλαίσιο προστασίας του φυσικού αλλά και του ανθρωπογενούς τοπίου έναντι των σταθερά  αυξανόμενων παρεμβάσεων του σύγχρονου ανθρώπου σε αυτό. Η διαχρονική παρουσία των ανθρώπινων ομάδων, ιδιαίτερα στον Ελληνικό χώρο, έχει επιδράσει άλλοτε περισσότερο, άλλοτε λιγότερο στη διαμόρφωσή του. Το νομικό καθεστώς για την προστασία του αρχαιολογικού και φυσικού τοπίου, έχει ήδη επιβάλλει συγκεκριμένες μορφές μελέτης και τεκμηρίωσης. Η αρχαιολογική έρευνα όμως αναζητά διαρκώς περισσότερες και νέες μεθοδολογικές προσεγγίσεις για την καλύτερη κατανόηση της εξέλιξης της σχέσης ανθρώπου – φύσης – χώρου. Για την κατανόηση του περιβάλλοντος χώρου όπου έδρασε και έζησε ο άνθρωπος και οι μεταβολές που υπέστησαν το τοπίο και οι βιοκοινωνίες από φυσικές αιτίες (σεισμοί, κατολισθήσεις, φυσική διάβρωση κ.α.) και από την ανεξέλεγκτη ανθρωπογενή παρέμβαση (αποψίλωση, συστηματική καλλιέργεια, αλιεία), δημιουργήθηκε ικανός αριθμός νέων μεθοδολογικών προσεγγίσεων με κυρίαρχο φορέα την Περιβαλλοντική Αρχαιολογία.
Η προϊστορική Αιτωλοακαρανία αποτελεί μία ενδιαφέρουσα ερευνητική πρόκληση για μία παρόμοια μελέτη, καθώς έχει υποστεί σημαντικές περιβαλλοντικές, οικονομικές και κοινωνικές αλλαγές. Η παρούσα μελέτη αποτελεί μία πρώτη ερμηνευτική προσπάθεια της παράλληλης πορείας του φυσικού και του ανθρωπογενούς χώρου στην Αιτωλοακαρνανία. Με ποιό τρόπο λοιπόν το φυσικό περιβάλλον καθόρισε τη δημιουργία και την διάρκεια ζωής των οικιστικών συνόλων?

Metrological analysis becomes an essential tool for understanding and dating the coin issues of the Acarnanian League. By constructing frequency-tables and taking into account certain literary sources and inscriptions, as well as analogous numismatic examples, it was proven that for the early coin series (late 5th c. BC) it was used a Reduced Corinthian weight standard for striking the three denominations (drachms, triobols, obol) bearing the letters F, T, E, which actually denote numerals corresponding to the nominal value of each issue (6 - 3 - 1 obols).
After adopting the proper Corinthian standard for a short while (late 4th c. BC) the Acarnanians enabled again a reduced version for minting Corinthian type staters in correspondance with numismatic changes in South Italy (early 3rd century BC). Moreover, the well-known Aetolo-Acarnanian Treaty (IG IX 12 1, 3A; ca. 260 BC), in which a rather clear reference is made to the use of the (Reduced) Corinthian standard by the Acarnanians, provides the terminus post quem for their next metrological innovation.
The introduction of new denominations (weighing approx. 10 g, 5 g and 2.5 g) in Acarnania during the late 3rd - early 2nd century BC is examined within a broader scope, in connection to other areas (Epirus, Aetolia, etc.), and some light is shed regarding the interpretation of the weight standard being the so-called ‘Korkyrean’ instead of the Reduced Aeginetan. Additionally, interesting remarks can be extracted from metrological data that highlight coin production patterns of the Acarnanian federal mint both in times of stability and unrest.

Im Zuge der sukzessiven Eroberung Griechenlands durch die Römer seit dem 2. Jh. v. Chr. wurden die hellenistischen Königreiche und Polisbünde in römische Provinzen umgewandelt, wodurch sich massive Veränderungen in allen Lebensbereichen der Bevölkerung ergaben. Vor diesem Hintergrund ist die Landschaft Akarnanien in Westgriechenland ein vielversprechendes Untersuchungsgebiet. Es befindet sich in der Nähe von Actium, wo nach der Schlacht zwischen Octavianus und Antonius im Jahre 31 v. Chr. laut historischer Überlieferung tiefgreifende regionale Umstrukturierungen stattfan­den. Deshalb befasst sich das Promotionsprojekt mit den römerzeitlichen Funden dieser Region.
Als Forschungsgrundlage dient die Aufarbeitung archäologischen Materials. Dabei werden die römerzeitlichen Funde (1. Jh. v. Chr. bis 4. Jh. n. Chr.) mehrerer Projekte aus Akarnanien in Westgriechenland systematisch aufgearbeitet und der archäologischen Forschung zugänglich ge­macht. Die weiterführenden Fragen der Dissertation fokussieren einen Epochenübergang (von hellenistischer zu römischer Zeit), der unmittelbar mit einem historisch überlieferten Systemwechsel (auf politischer, administrativer, ökonomischer, sozialer etc. Ebene) verbunden werden kann.
Die Kernfrage der Dissertation ist, inwiefern sich dieser Systemwechsel in der materiellen Kultur der Region niederschlägt. Der Schwerpunkt der Analyse liegt, im Gegensatz zu anderen Arbeiten dieser Art, in der Diagnose ökonomischer Wirkungsmechanismen in ihren Bezügen zu Gesellschaft und naturäumlich bedingter Ressourcen. Diese Fragestellung basiert auf der Prä­misse, dass sich antike Wirtschaftssysteme über ihre materiellen und geistigen Hinterlassenschaften, also die überlieferten Produkte und Texte, rekonstruieren lassen. Da Menge, Funktion und Gestaltung der Produkte an die jeweiligen Ansprüche und Bedürfnisse einer Gesellschaft gebunden sind, sind sie orts-, zeit- und gesellschaftsspezifisch verankert. Somit lassen sich in der Erforschung ökonomischer Wirkungsmechanismen mit den Artefakten als unmittelbare Informationsträger sowohl die Produktion (Materialverwendung, angewandte Technik, Gestaltung etc.), als auch, im Kontext, die Konsumption (Bedarf, Funktion, Verwendung etc.) beschreiben. In Kontinuität und Wandel bestimmter technischer und ökonomischer Artefaktmerkmale wird evident, welche Formen lokalen Wirtschaftens auch nach dem Systemwechsel weiter praktiziert und welche aufgegeben wurden.
Diese Ergebnisse werden dann anhand der überlieferten Schriftquellen ergänzt und in einen gesamthistorischen Zusammenhang gestellt. Hierbei werden zum einen unsere bisherigen historischen Annahmen anhand archäologischer Quellen überprüft, zum anderen sollen die bislang in der wirtschaftshistorischen Forschung verwendeten ökonomischen Modelle kritisch analysiert werden. Neben dem soziokulturellen Kontext stehen dem Antragsteller zudem die Ergebnisse geowissenschaftlicher und archäo-botanischer Vorarbeiten zur Verfügung, die in die Untersuchung miteinbezogen werden. So kann geklärt werden, welche Wirkung die naturräumlichen Gegebenheiten auf die lokale Ökonomie hatten.

The polis model, both as an urban center and as a political community, represented a key-element in the evolution of the Northwestern ethne into federal states. In such development, the polis played an important role both as an external factor, for the presence of Corinthian and Elean colonies in the coastal area and offshore islands, and an internal, for the birth and growth of urban settlements (here called “tribal poleis”) in ethnos territories. The present paper focuses mainly on the latter, with the aim of determining whether it is possible to find out substantial differences between the “normal” Greek poleis and those tribal poleis that arose in the Northwestern Greece mostly in the course of the Fourth century. The analysis of some significant cases studies (Stratos, Phoinike, Kassopa, Kallipolis) leads us to assume that such peculiarities did exist, and can be mostly detected in the territorial control patterns and in the self-representation as political communities, which characterized the tribal poleis in a different way than the normal Greek poleis.

The decree, dating to the summer of 337 B.C., establishes on the one hand the granting of gold crowns and citizenship to two Akarnanians brothers, Phormion and Karphinas, commanders of an Akarnanian military contingent that apparently supported Athens in the battle of Chaironeia, on the other the recognition of a series of honors to those Akarnanians who followed them and constituted evidently the nerve of this contingent. The honorary decree is extremely interesting for the reconstruction of the Athenian situation immediately after the battle of Chaironeia, when Athens - apparently pro-Macedonian - seemed to carry on its resistance against Philip II by granting asylum to those who had supported the city in the military clash against Macedonia and were persecuted for this reason. The decree, then, explicitly remembers that the grandfather of the two honorands, Phormion, had in turn been beneficiary in 400 BC. ca. of the granting of Athenian citizenship: the mention of this previous action creates a strong link, with evident propagandistic implications, between the moments following the battle of Chaironeia and those following the end of the Peloponnesian war. Finally, the decree may also be considered a valid source for the study of the concession of the isoteleia, in this specific case granted in its widest form (exemption from the metoikion, right of enktesis, guarantee of legal protections, right to pay eisphorai with citizens) and not to individuals, but to a group of political exiles.

The purpose of this brief essay is to suggest that all the beardless man-faced bulls on the coinage of Akarnania, and possibly two of the bearded varieties, represent the assimilation of a local magistrate with Acheloios.  This is based partially on the fact that Akarnanian magistrates were the religious leaders of the League by the time the vast majority of these coins were issued, and justified with recourse to examples of assimilation in the Acheloian cultic tradition, including the lead “curse” tablets found at Amathus, which, although late and from a distant location, attest to the longstanding idea of assimilation with Acheloios in their employment of the term Αχελομορφωθ.

Der dritte Band der Akarnanien-Forschungen umfasst die überarbeitete Dissertationsschrift von Anne Sieverling, in der am Fallbeispiel des westgriechischen Stratos und seinem Umland, der Stratiké, die Ernährungsstrategien im frühen Akarnanien präsentiert werden. Die Keramikgefäße, einige Kleinfunde, die Tierreste und Pflanzenpollen der näheren und weiteren Umgebung wurden im Hinblick auf ihre ernährungsbezogenen Aussagen analysiert, um die Entwicklung der Esskultur von der frühen Eisenzeit bis zum Ende der Archaik (ca. 1050–480 v. Chr.) zu erschließen. Zusätzlich wurden die historischen und ikonografischen Quellen anderer Regionen einer trophischen Untersuchung unterzogen, um Diskurse und Darstellungsmodi dieser Epochen darzulegen.
Jede Objekt- bzw. Quellengattung wird in einem gesonderten Kapitel diskutiert und abschließend die jeweiligen Ergebnisse gemeinsam betrachtet, um die Forschungsfragen nach den zur Verfügung stehenden Lebensmitteln und deren Möglichkeiten der Verarbeitung sowie Konsumption und der Veränderungsweise der Ess- und Trinkkultur synoptisch zu beantworten. Erstmalig werden drei früheisenzeitliche und archaische Keramikinventare vorgelegt und in diesem Zusammenhang eine stringente Methode der Funktionsanalyse der Gefäße zunächst kritisch diskutiert und im Anschluss konsequent auf die Keramikinventare angewendet. Außerdem wird ein archäozoologischer Befund aus dem Heiligtum auf der Spathari-Anhöhe vorgelegt und den bereits bekannten Tierresten aus Stratos gegenübergestellt. Die erstmalige gemeinsame Betrachtung der palynologischen Untersuchungen aus Akarnanien und Aitolien offenbart ihr Potential für die Ernährungsforschung und ergänzt die tierischen um die pflanzlichen Lebensmittel in der Region. Mit der Einbeziehung dieser unterschiedlichen Quellengattungen bietet dieses Buch umfassende Erkenntnisse zur Ernährung, deren Entwicklung und zum Konsumptionsverhalten der Bevölkerung von Stratos und der Stratiké in der 1. Hälfte des 1. Jahrtausends v. Chr.

The article deals with the Roman mouldmade lamps found during the excavations 1995 and 1996 in Stratos/Acarnania. It offers an introduction to the different types and the results of their examination. Up to now, mouldmade lamps of the types found on the agora of Stratos are considered as a Corinthian production. But due to the recovering of the roman lamp workshops A and B in Patras this notion has to be reviewed. Accordingly the study also takes a look on the specific properties of mouldmade lamps conditioned by the method of mass production and discusses - using the examples of two lamps of the type Broneer XXVII – an advanced classification of mouldmade lamps produced in Greece.
