Unguentarium

Özet: Bu çalışmada İnegöl ve çevresinde yapılan araştırmalar sonucunda tespit edilmiş olan ve İnegöl Kent Müzesi'nde sergilenen seramikler tasnif edi-lerek değerlendirilecektir. Seramik buluntular arasında Hellenistik Dönem'e tarihlenen kırmızı/ siyah astarlı tabak, kase vb. günlük kullanıma ait parçalar, Roma Dönemi as-tarlı kaplarına ait parçalar, kandiller ve unguentarium, Bizans Dönemi sırlı kap parçaları yer almaktadır. Bizans seramikleri "Zeuksippus Ailesi" olarak tanınan grup içerisinde tasnifleyebileceğimiz örneklerdir. Tespit edilen bu se-ramik buluntuların çizimleri yapıldıktan sonra detaylı teknik bilgilerini içeren katalog çalışmaları tamamlanacaktır. Seramikler dönemlerine göre sınıflandı-rılarak, istatistiksel veriler sunulacaktır. Büyük ölçüde ince seramiklerden oluşan bu buluntuların İnegöl ilçe-sindeki Hellenistik, Roma ve Bizans Dönemleri yerleşimleri ile ilgili veriler sağlaması beklenmektedir.

The Hellenistic and Roman city of Hierapolis in Phrygia, South-Western Asia Minor, boasts one of the largest necropoleis known from the Roman world. While the grave  monuments have seen long-lasting interest, few funerary contexts have been subject to excavation and publication. The present study analyses the artefact finds from four tombs, investigating the context of grave gifts and funerary practices with focus on the Roman imperial period. It considers to what extent the finds influence and reflect varying identities of Hierapolitan individuals over time.

Combined, the tombs use cover more than 1500 years, paralleling the life-span of the city itself. Although the material is far too small to give a conclusive view of funerary assem-blages in Hierapolis, the attempted close study and contextual integration of the objects does yield some results with implications for further studies of funerary contexts on the site and in the wider region.

The use of standard grave goods items, such as unguentaria, lamps and coins, is found to peak in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Clay unguentaria were used alongside glass ones more than a century longer than what is usually seen outside of Asia Minor, and this period saw the development of new forms, partially resembling Hellenistic types. Some burials did not include any grave gifts, and none were extraordinarily rich, pointing towards a standardised, minimalistic set of funerary objects.

Evidence of Pagan, Jewish and Christian burials is found not to be visible in the grave gifts of the Roman period. Also aspects of social status, and local or ethnic identity are only scarcely attested. Individual and group identities seem to be manifest in tomb monuments and inscriptions, rather than in objects involved in funerary rites. The consequence of this is a material that is largely "Roman".

Perfume was an important material throughout history of human being which was used in ceremonies (marriage, death and religious) and for beauty, sexuality and health. Lots of unguent bottles were found in archaeological excavations. The aim of this paper is to study the perfumes in various cultures in ancient times. At the present day, the word "perfume" comes from the Latin words "per" and "fumus". We have only a few data from the prehistoric times but ancient texts describing the methods of production came from ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The perfumes were used mostly from the 7th century BC. onwards... Öz:  Tarih boyunca, kokulu yağlar/parfümler, insanların yaşamında önemli yer tutmuştur. Güzellik ve sağ-lıkla ilgili uygulamaların yanı sıra, evlilik, cenaze ve ibadet törenlerinde de kullanılmıştır. Arkeolojik kazılarda yerleşim alanlarında ve mezarlarda çok sayıda parfüm kabı ele geçmektedir. Bu çalışmadaki amaç, antik dönemde çeşitli kültürlerdeki parfüm üretimi, çeşitleri ve kullanımı konusunu incelemektir. Günümüzde kullanılan "parfüm" kelimesi, Latince "per" (içinden) ve "fumus" (koku) kelimelerinin bileşiminden oluşmaktadır Prehistorik dönemdeki parfüm ya da kokulu kremlerin kullanımıyla ilgili bilgilerimiz azdır. Mısır'da Eski Krallık zamanında ve Mezopotamya'daki eski metinlerde, çeşitli par-fümlerin üretimlerinden söz edilmektedir. MÖ 7. yüzyıldan itibaren artan parfüm üretimi, Hellenistik ve Roma İmparatorluk Dönemleri'nde daha da yaygınlaşmıştır.

The archaeological context of Cagliari (Sardinia) gives us the possibility to examine the link between terracotta and glass unguentaria. From the record of newly made (as the forthcoming work on the excavations of Via Caprera 8, conducted by Anna Luisa Sanna, volume edited by the authors of this paper and Laura Soro) and old excavations in the area of the ancient city, we try to define the evolution from terracotta to glass unguentaria from Hellenistic to Roman Imperial period. The finds
come either from urban and funerary context in a period that goes from fourth-third centuries B.C. to Late Roman period. Terracotta fusiform unguentaria are obviously the majority. They differ in many cases for the bottoms or the rims. In order to define the evolution of the typology is necessary to premise that the condition of the finds differ from urban context (excavations of Villa Tigellio, Via Caprera, 8, Via Brenta, teatro Massimo, just to cite some examples) to grave goods (necropolis of ex albergo “La Scala di Ferro” and Tuvixeddu), that are usually better
preserved than the former. Funerary contexts grant, numerous times, even fully preserved specimens. Glass unguentaria are less attested and the most common forms known from Cagliari are Isings 6, 8, 28. The first century A.D. might be a pointbreak in the evolution of terracotta unguentaria which production, and commerce, seems to change.

2009 yılından itibaren İstanbul’un Avrupa yakasında Avcılar-Küçükçekmece ilçelerinin sınırlarında  Küçükçekmece Göl Havzası (Bathonea) kazıları yürütülmektedir. Söz konusu kazılar kapsamında 8. alan olarak adlandırılan bölgede bulunan 12-17EFG açmalarında kuzeybatı-güneydoğu doğrultulu büyük bir mimari yapı kompleksi ortaya çıkarılmaya başlanmıştır. Söz konusu yapı kompleksinde hem tekil hem de yapının doğusunda toplu olarak yoğun bir şekilde unguentariumlar bulunmuştur. Unguentariumların bir tanesinin içerisinde rastlanılan reçine kalıntısına yaptırılan analiz sonucunda pişmiş toprak şişe içerisinde “Methanone” ve “Phenanthrene” maddeleri tespit edilmiştir. Bu maddelerin psikoaktif sakinleştirici ile yaraları iyileştirici, iltihapları önleyici, fagositleri aktifleştirici, adet öncesi ve sonrası rahatsızlıkları önleyici, damarları büzücü, mikropları yok edici, immün sistemini kuvvetlendirici etkilerinin bulunması nedeniyle unguentariumların, ilaç şişeleri olarak kullanıldığı anlaşılmıştır. Unguentariumların bulunduğu kontekst içerisinde çeşitli boyutlarda eczacılıkta kullanılan havan ve havanelleri ele geçirilmiştir. Yoğun olarak yapının doğu mekânında bulunan unguentariumlar ve diğer küçük buluntular doğrultusunda bu yapı grubunun sağlıkla ilişkili olduğu düşünülmektedir. İlerleyen kazı sezonlarında elde edilecek bulgular ile bu düşüncenin daha da netleşeceği
öngörülmektedir.

Öz Cıngırt Kayası Doğu Karadeniz Bölgesi'nde Ordu/Fatsa İlçesi Yapraklı Köyü sınırları içinde bulunan konumuyla, Antik Çağda Pontos olarak adlandırılan bölgede yer almaktadır. Antik kaynaklarda VI. Mithradates Dönemi'nde Doğu Karadeniz Bölgesi'nin kontrolü ve savunma stratejisi kapsamında oluşturulan Phrourionların varlığından söz edilmektedir. Ağırlıklı olarak yerleşimin zirve kesiminde yürütülen kazı çalışmalarından elde edilen verilere dayanarak Cıngırt Kayası'nın VI. Mithradates Dönemi'nin Phrourion karakterli yerleşimlerinden birisi olabileceği önerilmektedir. Makalenin konusunu oluşturan materyal, 2012-2014 yılları arasında devam eden kazılarda yerleşimin zirve kesiminde yürütülen çalışmalardan ele geçen unguentarium parçaları arasından seçilmiş profil veren örneklerdir. Çalışma kapsamına alınan örnekler, kazı verileri ve paralel materyal ışığında tipolojik ve kronolojik açıdan değerlendirilerek, katalog ve levha bilgileriyle sunulmaktadır. Doğu Karadeniz Bölgesi'nde az sayıda yürütülen kazı çalışmalarından birisi olan Cıngırt Kayası'ndan ele geçen söz konusu materyalin tanıtılması ve değerlendirilmesiyle; konuyla ilgili ilk bilimsel verilerin paylaşılması ve bölge arkeolojisine katkı sağlanması amaçlanmıştır.

This article presents an assemblage of Roman bronze objects (ampullae, aryballoi and pyxides) serving to contain oils, unguents, cosmetic powders or balsams unearthed recently in the Iberian Peninsula (Hispania). Most of these bronze domestic vessels (both published and unpublished) were brought to light in contexts linked to bathing or personal hygiene from the first centuries of the Roman Empire. The vessels reveal a variety of forms, models and decors (manifestations of Romanisation).

Eine dem Archäologischen Museum der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität Münster im Jahr 2009 von der Stadt Grevenbroich als Dauerleihgabe zur Verfügung gestellte Antikensammlung enthält zahlreiche antike, byzantinische und frühislamische Glasobjekte sowie einige Imitate solcher Gläser, die in ihrer Qualität sehr unterschiedlich und nicht immer eindeutig von den Originalen zu unterscheiden sind. Die Herkunft der Gläser ist unbekannt, aber es ist zu vermuten, dass die meisten von ihnen aus dem Nahen Osten oder aus Nordafrika stammen. So finden sich darunter einige für diese Regionen typische Formen der römischen Kaiserzeit, der byzantinischen und der frühislamischen Zeit. Die mit Abstand meisten der Gläser wurden durch freies Ausblasen eines erhitzten Glaspostens hergestellt. Daneben gehören der Sammlung aber auch mehrere in eine Form geblasene Gläser, Schmuckobjekte sowie das Fragment einer formgeschmolzenen frührömischen Rippenschale an. Die sog. Sandkerntechnik wird durch ein modernes Imitat solcher Gläser repräsentiert, das jedoch durch Glasblasen hergestellt wurde.

After the foundation of Thessaloniki in 317 BC, the city soon developed into a major port of the North Aegean Sea. The majority of the published burial context here comes from the cemetery of the city. Regarding the pottery, the archaeological evidence proves that the import from the Athenian Kerameikos is constantly continued. At the same time, the operation of local ceramic production which produces both atticising and plain wares coincides chronically with the foundation of the city.

A significant part of Hellenistic pottery in the burials of the nomads of Asian Sarmatia of the 2nd –1st centuries BC is represented by fusiform unguentaria. They are found mainly in the burials of adult or elderly male warriors in the Lower Don, in the interfluve of the Don and Volga and in the Trans-Volga regions and could be considered by their owners as status items, even after their contents were used, which was not always the case, given finds of the contents in the flasks. This is unlikely to suggest long-term storage or secondary use, given the extremely small volume of such vessels. In the burials with unguentaria objects of oriental origin are found, or elements of a funeral rite are of oriental origin. It is obvious that the owners of Hellenistic pottery, all or part of them, represent nomads who came from the East, at least some of whom had some kind of contacts with Parthia. This is consistent with the fact that the burials in which they were found could have belonged to representatives of the same wave that took part ca. 145 BC in the defeat of the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom and after that – in conflicts with Parthia. Some of the flasks bear a close resemblance to the unguentaria from the Cingirt Kayazi fortress on the southern coast of the Black Sea, founded during the reign of Mithridates VI Eupator and abandoned after the Roman defeated him. There is reason to believe that a military contingent was located in the fortress, and the iron arrowheads found here are associated with Sarmatian mercenaries as part of it. If this is so, and this observation corresponds to the information of written sources, then we have a very probable origin of at least part of the unguentaria found in the burials of Asian Sarmatia. This assumption perfectly correlates with the fact that the flasks were found in the burials of mature male warriors.

MÖ 6. yüzyılın ortalarında Milet kolonizasyonun etkisiyle kurulan (bugünkü Atakum İlçesindeki
Çakalca-Karadoğan Höyüğü) Amisos kenti, siyasi ve ticari hacminin gelişip genişmesiyle birlikte
MÖ 4. yüzyılın sonlarına doğru, 16 km. doğusuna (bugünkü İlkadım İlçesi, Toroman Tepe ve
çevresi) konumlandırılmıştır. Bu dönemde kent, nekropol alanıyla birlikte sınırlarını genişleterek
konumunu büyültmüştür. Bu çalışmada, Kentin nekropol alanında sıkça karşılaşılan mezar
tiplerinden biri olan yer altı kaya mezarı ele alınmıştır. Söz konusu yer altı kaya mezarı, eğimli
arazi yapısı üzerine konglomera kayaç yapısının oyulmasıyla yapılmıştır. Mezarda, Geç Helenistik
Dönem ile Erken Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi’ne ait buluntular ele geçmiştir. İki defin nişi
bulunan mezarda yoğun olarak pişmiş toprak unguentarium ve lagynos parçaları dikkati
çekmektedir. Fusiform ve piriform gövde yapısına sahip unguentariumlar ile lagynoslara ait
seramik parçalarının mezar içinde kırık olarak ele geçmesi belirli bir amacın varlığına işaret
etmektedir. Mezarda defin kalıntıları olarak sadece ölü bireye ait kafatası parçaları ele geçmiştir.
Ölü bireye ait kafatası parçalarından birinin üzerinde ise bir oyuk bulunmaktadır. Oyukla ilgili yapılan incelemeler, ölü bireyin kafatasına trepanasyon uygulamasının yapılmış olduğunu
göstermiştir. Trepanasyonlu kafatası olarak kent nekropolünde ele geçen ilk örnektir. Çalışmada,
trepanasyon uygulaması üzerinde durularak bazı çıkarımlarda bulunulmuştur. Ayrıca, mezar yapısı
ve defin nişleri üzerinde durularak mezarda ele geçen altın, metal alaşım, cam, çakmaktaşı, demir,
taş, pişmiş topraktan yapılmış in-situ konumda ele geçen buluntular katalog şekline ayrıntılı olarak
işlenmiştir. Buluntular benzerleriyle karşılaştırılarak analojileri yapılıp tarihlendirilmiştir.
Araştırma sonucunda, mezar yapısından ve farklı dönemlere ait olan buluntulardan, mezarın, Geç
Helenistik-Erken Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi’nde birden çok kullanım görmüş olduğu sonucuna
varılmıştır.

Küçükçekmece Göl Havzası (Bathonea) kazıları İstanbul’da Küçükçekmece Gölü’nün batı yakasında 2009 yılından itibaren sürdürülmektedir. Çalışmanın konusunu 2009-2013 yılları arasında yapılan kazı çalışmalarında bulunan unguentariumlar oluşturmaktadır. Unguentariumlar incelendiğinde “İğ Gövdeli” ve “Geç Antik Çağ” unguentariumları olarak adlandırılan iki tipte oldukları saptanmıştır. İğ gövdeli unguentariumlardan 3 adet dip parçası bulunmuş olup diğer kazılardaki örneklerle karşılaştırılarak MÖ 3-2. yüzyıla tarihlendirilmiştir. Geç Antik Çağ unguentariumlarından ise incelenen unguentariumlardan 477 adeti bu tez kapsamında kataloglanarak değerlendirilmiştir. Geç Antik Çağ sivri dipli unguentariumları damgasız ve damgalı olarak sınıflandırılarak damgalı olanlar da “Figürlü, ANT, Çift Harf, Çok Harfli, Blok, Çapraz, Kelebek ve Kazıma” damgalar olarak kategorize edilmiştir. Söz konusu unguentariumlarla aynı kontekstten gelen diğer buluntularla birlikte değerlendirilerek MS 6-7. yüzyıla tarihlendirilmiştir. Geç Antik Çağ unguentariumunda tespit edilen kalıntıya TÜBİTAK MAM’da yaptırılan analiz sonucunda rastlanılan maddelerden (Methanone ve Phenanthrene) yola çıkılarak söz konusu kaplarda ilaç muhafaza edildiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. 12-17 E-G açmalarında ortaya çıkarılan bazilikal planlı yapının güneybatısında 11-14 I-M açmalarında yer alan Martyrion? olabilecek sekizgen planlı yapının da bulunmasıyla birlikte Geç Antik Çağ unguentariumlarının bulunduğu mekânın depo olabileceğini yapının ise sağlık kapsamında bir dini tedavi (şifa) merkezi olabileceği düşünülmektedir. Sekizinci kazı sezonunu geride bırakan kazıda küçük açmalarda ele geçen çok fazla arkeolojik buluntu havzada bulunan yerleşimin önemini göstermekte olup ilerleyen zamanlarda yapılacak kazı çalışmalarıyla birlikte daha net yorumlar yapılabilecektir.

Riassunto: Dallo scavo di Via Caprera 8 provengono trenta frammenti di unguentario riferibili alle forme tipiche dell'epoca tardo-repubblicana e primo-imperiale. Alcuni reperti sono assimilabili a tipologie ben note nel mondo punico mentre la maggior parte dei quali trova confronto nel più ampio campionario dei tipi morfologici ellenistici variamente definiti attraverso le numerose classificazioni.

Abstract: Thirty fragments of hellenistic and roman unguentaria have been found in the material of Via Caprera 8. One specimen is related to Punic age but the others seems linked to more widespread Hellenistic and Roman types.

Yeni Foça-İzmir karayolunun batısında, Kyme Antik Kenti’nden yaklaşık 1 km uzaklıkta, kentin güney nekropolisi içerisine  giren  tepelerin  batıya bakan  yamaçları  Batı  Liman  Nekropolisi  olarak  isimlendirilmiştir. 2011  yılında yürütülen kazı çalışmalarında, nekropolisin batı yamaçlarını kapsayan üçüncü derece taşınmazda mezarlara ulaşılmış, bu çalışmada tespit edilen mezarların tümü incelenmiştir. Kazısı yapılan alanda toplam 34 mezar ortaya çıkarılırken, anakaya ve toprak çukurlar içerisinde olmak üzere, mezarların tümünde inhumasyon geleneği uygulanmıştır. Bireylerin bu çukurlara defin edilmesinin ardından, üzerleri bir ila beş arasında değişen kireçtaşı plakalar ve çatı formu verilerek yapılmış çatı kiremitleri (stroterler) ile kapatılmıştır. Buluntu kontekstlerine sahip mezarlar sayesinde kronolojik bir değerlendirme yapıldığında, nekropolisteki en erken gömü MÖ 5. yüzyıl ikinci yarısına tarihlendirilen kireçtaşı plaka kapaklı mezarlar ile temsil edilmektedir. MÖ 4. ve 3. yüzyıllarda kısmen baskın bir gömü yoğunluğunu olduğu saptanırken, MÖ 2. yüzyıl ortası ve sonrasına ait mezarlar geç gömüler olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Bunun yanı sıra, kazısı yapılmış ve kısmen yayınlanmış diğer Kyme nekropolisleriyle benzerlikleri ve farklılıkları karşılaştırmalı olarak ele alınmıştır.

Perfumed oils were used widely in the Roman world. These goods
were at first an aristocratic item, but this situation changed at the end of Late Roman Republic age, when a more wide spread trade began. The Saeculum Augustum led to a “democratization” of perfume and jewelry, the called ornamenta muliebria. Its production was increasingly characterized by massive trade. Roman women bought these luxury goods for pleasure, medical purposes and for making the external appearance of their social status. Thus, a critical analysis shows us that the unguenta had more than a hygienic function. They clearly indicated wealthy, rank and merit. This study evaluates, through ancient texts, inscriptions and archeological remains, the cultural and economic importance of perfume in the Roman society.

Abstract: The Unguentarium is a type of ceramic vessel whose use is thought to date back to the Hellenistic period, although it is not known exactly when it originated, it is known that in the 20th century. French archaeologists first named it Unguentarium. These vessels, which are small in size and made in various models, may have thin necks, wide mouths and seal patterns. On the outside, they are likened to a small amphitheatre. There are unguentariums made of ceramic material as well as those made of glass material. When we look at the usage areas, it is understood that various cosmetic products, perfumes, creams made from different plants, massage oils are kept in these containers. According to some sources Unguentariums have also been used as tear bottles. These vessels are thought to have been used in religious rituals due to their presence in cemeteries. Sometimes ceramic and glass Unguentarium can be removed together from the same tomb. A few can be found together in the excavation of the grave, as well as tens of others can be found. It is known that very valuable liquids are not transported in terracotta vessels, the reason of they can leak.

Amisos kentinin nekropol alanında ortaya çıkan yer altı kaya mezarı, ana mekân, defin nişleri ve klineleri ile kentin diğer yer altı kaya mezarı örnekleriyle benzer şekil ve yapım özelliklerine sahiptir. Mezar yapısı ayrıntılı olarak açıklanarak planın daha net anlaşılabilmesi için çizimlerle desteklenmiştir. Mezarda sadece pişmiş toprak amphora, unguentarium ve lagynoslar ele geçmiştir. Buluntuların mezardaki in-situ konumları, çizime işlenerek görsel olarak sunulmuştur. Mezarda ele geçen unguentariumlar, iğ ve torba gövdeli olarak iki farklı forma sahipken kendi içinde de çeşitli varyantları bulunmaktadır. Altı düz formlu olan amphora ise benzer örnekler ışığında değerlendirilmiştir. Ayrıca mezar buluntularının dönemsel özellikleri üzerinde kısaca durulmuş olup analojileri yapılmış ve böylelikle tarihlendirmeleri gerçekleştirilmiştir. Buluntular içinde bir tane unguentarium Geç Helenistik Dönem’e aitken diğer buluntular Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi’ne tarihlenmektedir. Böylelikle iki farklı döneme ait buluntuların ele geçmesinden dolayı mezarın hangi dönemde kullanıldığına ilişkin çeşitli çıkarımlarda bulunulmuştur. Özellikle Geç Helenistik Dönem’e ait bir buluntunun Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi buluntularıyla bir arada ele geçmiş olmasına ilişkin yorumlar gerçekleştirilmiştir. Ayrıca mezarın açık olan defin nişlerinin sonradan tekrar kullanılıp kullanılmadığına ilişkin çeşitli değerlendirmeler yapılmıştır. Bununla birlikte mezarın defin nişlerinde ve klinelerde define (ya da definlere) ait herhangi bir kemik kalıntısı ele geçmemiştir. Sadece ana mekânda çok az yoğunlukta kemik parçaları gözlemlenmiş olup bu duruma ilişkin bazı hususlara değinilmiştir. Mezardaki çeşitli verilerin değerlendirilmesi sonucunda mezardaki buluntuların yoğunluğu Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi’nin M.S. 1. – 3. yüzyıl aralığını ön plana çıkarmıştır. Mezar buluntularını, defin (ya da definler) için libasyon amacıyla
kullanılmış birer sunu kapları olarak değerlendirilmiş ve mezarın, M.S. 1. - 3. yüzyıl aralığında kullanım gördüğü anlaşılmıştır. Bu çalışmada amaç, Antik Yunan - Roma dünyasının mezar tipleri ya da gömü adetleri/gelenekleri üzerine çıkarımlarda bulunarak bir değerlendirme yapmak değildir. Amisos nekropolünde ortaya çıkmış olan bir mezarı, buluntularıyla birlikte ele alarak değerlendirmek ve bölge arkeolojisi açısından gün ışığına çıkarmaktır.

İzmir Müzesi Başkanlığınca yürütülen kazı çalışmalarında, İDÇ Liman İşletmelerine ait parseller üzerinde sondaj ve kurtarma kazıları gerçekleştirilmiştir. Kazısı yapılan arazi, Kyme yerleşimine yaklaşık 1 km uzaklıkta, kenti çepeçevre saran nekropolis alanlarından, Kyme’nin güney nekropolisi içerisinde yer almaktadır. Nekropolis alanında ortaya çıkarılan ve kazısı yapılan tüm mezarlar üst üste gömüden ziyade, geniş bir alana yayılarak konumlandırılmıştır. Çalışmada on altı mezar değerlendirilmiş, içerisinden çıkan buluntularıyla
birlikte incelenmiştir. On altı mezarın tümünde inhumasyon geleneği uygulanmış olup, mezarlar plaka kapaklı, çatı kiremidi ve basit tipte yapılmıştır. Bireyler mezarlara dorsal pozisyonda yatırılmış, on beşi yetişkin, biri çocuk olmak üzere on altı birey belirlenmiştir. Genel olarak mezar buluntularından elde edilen veriler neticesinde, İDÇ Nekropolünün MÖ 4. ve 2. yüzyıl tarihleri aralığında kullanıldığı belirlenmiştir.

The present work offers an overview of the world of perfumes and unguents in Early Empire period. In order to do this, we first analyzed the methods and techniques used for the production of unguents and, second, the role played by the artisans dedicated to the perfume trade in Rome, the unguentarii. We emphasize these characters first, as individuals, where we talk about their social status, marital status, gender, age, origin, etc., secondly, as belonging members of some familia or some gens, third, by the place where they performed their work and lastly, during that period of time they performed this profession.

This is my Ph.D. thesis which is completed in February 2003 at the University of Cologne, Germany. My Ph.D. based on Hellenistic, Roman and Early Byzantine unguentaria from Cilicia and Pisida in southern Turkey.
A classical Roman unguentarium is typically a small narrow-necked glass or terracotta bottle topped with a slender neck and a thin-lipped rim. The base of these vessels can be in some cases rounded or fusiform -- in which case it is not self-standing -- or flat-bottomed. During the Hellenistic and Roman Imperial periods the main function of these vessels was to keep perfumed oils and cosmetic lotions fresh. In recent years some chemical analyses done within these objects yielded the information that the unguentarium was used to hold scented "holy" oils, unguents and perfumes. Beside this use it was also utilised for other religious purposes, especially as a votive at tombs. Beside the common term unguentarium, which is a modern invitation, this vessel type were also called as "balsamare", "ampulle" or "flacon" etc. What these vessels were originally called by ancient Greek and Romans is today unknown.
Terracotta unguentaria are found in relatively large quantities in Cilicia and Pisidia (southern Turkey), where they were produced from the Hellenistic to the early Byzantine periods. Their importance for understanding the material culture of Asia Minor has been highlighted by recent excavation publications and studies of local workshops. While an understanding of the role of unguentaria in the context of a specific site or as part of a regional pattern is crucial, the study of the vessel form itself has been overlooked.
This monography based primarily upon unpublished material from excavations, field surveys, and museum research, sets out a comprehensive model for the study of unguentaria, including their typology, chronology, contexts, function, regional characteristics, and distribution patterns. This research model illustrates how previous assumptions about the vessel’s typology must be re-evaluated. The vessel’s form demonstrates a high level of differentiation both between sites and within regions, meaning that a uniform "regional" typology, suggested in some studies (Anderson-Stojanović 1987: 105), cannot be maintained. It is, however, possible to speak of a "major" group which seems local imitations, such as in the "country style" seen in Cilicia and Pisidia.
During the Late Antique period the form and the function of unguentaria changed radically. It became a fusiform flask in shape, with a short tubular mouth marked off from the body by a slight ridge, tapering to a roughly truncated point. Most of these did not have handles. The approximate height of this new Late Antique form is 18-22 cm. The characteristics of these containers, which was first presented by J.W. Hayes in detail (Hayes 1971), are very distinctive: they are wheel-made, hard fired, with a thick, sturdy body and with a well smoothed and quite plain surface. They are also distinguished by prominent interior wheel-marks. At excavations in Saraçhane in Istanbul, various locations at Ephesos, Tarsus-Gözlükule, Anemurium, Pergē, Iasos, Cnidus, Hierapolis and Halicarnassus Late Antique terracotta unguentaria emerged in various contexts. A further exotic feature of these vessels is that they occasionally bear a small stamp (generally Early Byzantine monograms) just above the base, meaning and function of which are not easy to recognize. Similar stamps also appear on amphorae, bricks, lead seals, coins, column capitals and other architectural elements.
What these unguentaria contained has recently been determined by research at Sagalassos (results in press). They were simply contained vegetable oil, traces of which were found within the vessel. Many authors supported the idea that these vessels may well have functioned as a religious objects used to carry pilgrim or baptism-related substances such as so-called Early Christian rounded Menas ampullae. It is, however, difficult to judge at present which religious context, baptism or pilgrimage, applies. The archaeological contexts suggest that in many cases they accumulate in association with religious buildings or domestic areas. They are very rare finds in burial contexts, and curiously solely in Cilicia on the southern coast of Asia Minor. From this picture one could come to the conclusion that the classical use of earlier unguentaria as a votive at tombs were forgetten during the Late Antiquity.
The distribution of this vessel is very important in understanding its function and as well as related socio-economic trends of Late Antique Mediterranean. In the western part of Late Antique Mediterranean this type is much less common than in the Eastern. In addition, the fact that this vessel is not found at every early Byzantine sites is not easy to interpret. The major production center(s) of this very distinctive bottle type are not yet known, and one cannot judge at presesent if this typologically very heterogeneous group was produced at one single workshop. According to J. W. Hayes, however, they were produced at one workshop, located in Jordan or Palestine. Nevertheless, recent investigations show that most of the examples were found in Turkey rather than anywhere else.
Dates for these wares established in different locations in Asia Minor show that these vessels were produced and in use primarily between the 5th and 7th centuries A.D. It has been suggested that this form was forgotten after the 650s A.D. because of historical events, such as Perso-Arabian invasion. However, stratigraphical data from Saraçhane and Pergē shows that they were still in use up to the 8th and 9th centuries AD.
In this work I am involved with the Hellenistic, Roman Imperial (fig. 1a-b) and Late Antique-Early Byzantine terracotta unguentaria (fig. 2a-b) from Cilicia and Pisidia (southern Turkey) (fig. 3) (Laflı 2003a; 2002a and 2002b), in a part of which I intend to give a comprehensive and total view of this vessel type during the Late Antique-Early Byzantine period, with all of its principal aspects, such as typology, production, distribution, contextual information, chronology, function, regional characteristics etc. The ancient Greco-Roman regions Cilicia and Pisidia present a fascinating framework for a study of the interaction between indigenous, Greek, Roman and Early Byzantine cultures, as well as pagan and early Christian traditions (fig. 3). Also geographical distinctions between these regions afford us the facility to recognize the influence of geography in economical patterns of the Late Antiquity, such as regional and interregional exchange and consumation. The principals of my research based upon the former knowledge, yielded through past excavations and surveys, as well as my current research at local museums, excavations and surveys in Cilicia and Pisidia (Laflı 2002a and 2002b). The formerly known examples of Late Antique-Early Byzantine terracotta unguentaria are from Alahan, Anemurium (Taf. 256a-b) (Williams 1989: p. 89, Kat. 540; fig. 53), Antioch epi Oronthes, Mersin-Gayrattepe, Sagalassus, Seleuceia Sidera, Syedra-kiln site, Tarsus-Donuktaş and Tarsus-Gözlükule (Taf. 256c) (Johnson 1950: p. 296; Pl. 177, no. 1051; and Laflı 2003b). In addition to this, during my research in 2001 I have examined or collected information about formerly unknown pieces from Antioch pros Pisidia (Laflı 2003c), Elaiussa-Sebaste, Village İleği in Pisidia, Mersin-Gayrettepe , Seleuceia Sidera (Laflı 2003d), Syedra-city excavations as well as pieces from the local museums at Yalvaç, Isparta, Alanya, İçel, Hatay and Gaziantep.
Dates for these vessels established in different locations in Asia Minor show that these vessels were produced and in use primarily between the 5th and 7th centuries A.D. The monography concludes by considering the significance of unguentaria within their cultural context, and the reasons for the abrupt termination of their production in the mid-7th century AD: It has been suggested that this form was forgotten after the 650s A.D. because of historical events, such as Perso-Arabian invasions. However, stratigraphical data from Saraçhane (Hayes 1992: p. 8) and Pergē (Atik 1995: p. 181, note 478) shows that they were still in use up to the 8th and 9th centuries AD.

Antioch in Pisidia (southwestern Turkey) lies approximately 1 km northeast of Yalvaç in the province of Isparta. This brief report in German language is based on Roman and Late Roman-Early Byzantine ceramic finds from the rescue excavations by the local museum at the site in end of 1990s and beginning of 2000s. A concentration was given to Late Roman-Early Byzantine unguentaria and their stamps.

2020 yılında Nevşehir ili ve İlçelerinde sürdürülen yüzey araştırmasında, Avanos’a bağlı Çalış
Beldesinin 10 km kuzeydoğusunda, Belkuyu mevkiinde yeni bir nekropol alanı tespit edilmiştir.
Nekropolün hemen yanında onunla ilişki bir de höyük yer alır.. Tamamı kaçak kazılar neticesinde
tahrip olmuş nekropolde yüz elli mezar tespit edilmiştir. Tamamı kaçak kazılar sonucu tahrip olduğu
belirlen bu mezarların mimari ve arkeolojik malzemelerine ilişkin buluntular bölgenin ölü gömme
adetleri ve mezar mimarisinin yanı sıra nekropol ve höyüğün kronolojisi hakkında da önemli bilgileri
içermektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı arkeolojik ve mimari veriler ışığında bu nekropol alanı ve höyüğün
karakterizasyonunu ortaya koymaktır.

An anthropomorphic bronze vessel was recovered from a cremation burial of the Budaújlak cemet­
ery section of the canabae’s western cemetery by Bécsi Road in Budapest. The other grave goods
from the burial were three light coloured handled jugs, a silver T brooch lacking the pin, a strong­
ly corroded iron belt buckle (?) and bronze fragments that probably came from a small casket.
According to the anthropological examination, the few calcinated bone fragments from the burial
suggest that the deceased had been a “probably adult man”

Since 2009, excavations at Küçükçekmece Lake Basin (Bathonea) are being conducted within Avcılar and Küçükçekmece boroughs of Istanbul’s European side. Within scope of these excavations, a great, northwest-southeast oriented architectural building complex is being unearthed in trenches 12-17 EFG inside boundaries of the 8th region of the site. This building complex yielded numerous unguentaria which have been obtained as both single and multiple finds at the eastern part of structure. Results of analysis conducted on  the resin residue found inside one ceramic unguentarium revealed chemicals “methanone” and “phenanthrene”.  As these materials possess psychoactive tranquilizer, anti-inflammatory, phagocyte activator, preventive for troubles occurring both before and after menstruation, vasoconstrictor, disinfectant and immune-enhancing  qualities; it has become clear that these unguentaria have been used as medicine containers. Context which yielded unguentaria had also contained various sized mortars and pestles that have been used in pharmaceutical processes. Unguentaria and other small finds mainly obtained from the eastern side of structure, indicate
a health related purpose for function of the structure. It is believed that future finds from excavations will further clarify this interpretation.

This article presents a large group of sixth-seventh century late Roman unguentaria retrieved in the recent excavations at Carthago Spartaria, modern Cartagena, Spain. These unguentaria are studied in their typology, chronology, context, function, stamps and distribution patterns; they increase the body of archaeological evidence about Byzantine presence in Spania, providing us with new information about the archaeology, history and economy of this territory during this period.
