Since ancient times the Roman military system of the late third and second centuries BC as described by Polybius was considered a vastly different evolution, almost a revolutionary departure from the hoplite battle practice and defi nitely alien to the Macedonian phalanx. All our main sources, writing under the Roman Occupation regime (Plutarch, Polybius), or being outright Romans (Livius) have projected and imposed this view.
