The Sundarban, covering about one million ha in the delta of the rivers Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna is shared between Bangladesh (~60%) and India (~40%), and is the world’s largest coastal wetland. The area experiences a subtropical monsoonal climate with an annual rainfall of 1,600–1,800 mm and severe cyclonic storms. Enormous amounts of sediments carried by the rivers contribute to its expansion and dynamics. Salinity gradients change over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. The biodiversity includes about 350 species of vascular plants, 250 fishes and 300 birds, besides numerous species of phytoplankton, fungi, bacteria, zooplankton, benthic invertebrates, molluscs, reptiles, amphibians and mammals. Species composition and community structure vary east to west, and along the hydrological and salinity gradients. Sundarban is the habitat of many rare and endangered animals (Batagur baska, Pelochelys bibroni, Chelonia mydas), especially the Royal Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris). Javan rhino, wild buffalo, hog deer, and barking deer are now extinct from the area. Large areas of the Sundarban mangroves have been converted into paddy fields over the past two centuries, and more recently into shrimp farms. The Sundarban has been extensively exploited for timber, fish, prawns and fodder. The regulation of river flows by a series of dams, barrages and embankments for diverting water upstream for various human needs and for flood control has caused large reduction in freshwater inflow and seriously affected the biodiversity because of an increase in salinity and changes in sedimentation. Heritiera fomes (locally called Sundari, from which Sundarban derives its name), Nypa fruticans and Phoenix paludosa are declining rapidly. During the past three decades, large parts of the remaining Sundarban have been protected for wildlife, particularly tiger, through the creation of several sanctuaries and a biosphere reserve. Parts of the Sundarban in both India and Bangladesh have been declared World Heritage sites. However, its biodiversity continues to be threatened by a growing human population that not only places pressure on its biological resources, but also impacts on the freshwater inflows from upstream areas. Oil exploration in coastal areas is also emerging as a new threat. Further threats arise from global climate change, especially sea level rise. The future of the Sundarban will depend upon the management of freshwater resources as much as on the conservation of its biological resources.

In the Okavango Delta (about 28,000 km2) the number of identified species is 1,300 for plants, 71 for fish, 33 for amphibians, 64 for reptiles, 444 for birds, and 122 for mammals. The local occurrence of different species of these taxonomic groups in the Okavango Delta is mainly due to a hydrological gradient from permanent streams and swamps to seasonal floodplains, riparian woodlands, and dry woodlands. This level of species diversity is normal for the southern African region, and all analyzed aquatic groups are composed of ubiquitous species with an additional significant proportion of species originating from northern, more tropical systems. Cyclical variations in climate over thousands of years have created a huge wetland complex in the upper Zambezi and Okavango Rivers during wet phases. This wetland complex has fragmented into the Okavango Delta and other large wetlands in Zambia during dry phases. There are no endemic species in the Okavango Delta while the South-central African wetland complex is a centre of endemism. Species diversity of the Okavango Delta is a consequence of this unique environment, with dynamic shifts in flooding patterns that in turn force constant changes in patterns of plant succession and dependent animals. Temporal variations in flooding also cause accumulation and sudden mobilization of nutrients which are readily used by well adapted plant species. As a consequence, locally high biological productivity occurs, which in turn results in high numbers of grazing mammals.

A critical evaluation of literature values for the solubility products, K sp NBS = [Fe2+][HS−]γ Fe2+ γ HS− (H NBS + )−1, of various iron sulphide phases results in consensus values for the pKs of 2.95 ± 0.1 for amorphous ferrous sulphide, 3.6 ± 0.2 for mackinawite, 4.4 ± 0.1 for greigite, 5.1 ± 0.1 for pyrrhotite, 5.25 ± 0.2 for troilite and 16.4 ± 1.2 for pyrite. Where the analogous ion activity products have been measured in anoxic freshwaters in which there is evidence for the presence of solid phase FeS, the values lie within the range of 2.6–3.22, indicating that amorphous iron sulphide is the controlling phase. The single value for a groundwater of 2.65 (2.98 considering carbonate complexation) agrees. In seawater four values range between 3.85 to 4.2, indicating that mackinawite or greigite may be the controlling phase. The single low value of 2.94 is in a situation where particularly high fluxes of Fe (II) and S (−II) may result in the preferential precipitation of amorphous iron sulphide. Formation of framboidal pyrite in these sulphidic environments may occur in micro-niches and does not appear to influence bulk concentrations. Calculations show that the formation of Fe2S2 species probably accounts for very little of the iron or sulphide in most natural waters. Previously reported stability constants for the formation of Fe (HS)2 and (Fe (HS)3)− are shown to be suspect, and these species are also thought to be negligible in natural waters. In completely anoxic pore waters polysulphides also have a negligible effect on speciation, but in tidal sediments they may reach appreciable concentrations and lead to the direct formation of pyrite. Concentrations of iron and sulphide in pore waters can be controlled by the more soluble iron sulphide phase. The change in the IAP with depth within the sediment may reflect ageing of the solid phase or a greater flux of Fe (II) and S (−II) nearer the sediment surface. This possible kinetic influence on the value of IAPs has implications for their use in geochemical studies involving phase formation.

The following paper examines the Nile question from an Egyptian perspective. The Nile is Egypt’s main source of water, and 96% of this water originates from outside of its territory. This explains why water is a key security issue for Egypt, and why, from Egypt’s point of view, cooperation with the upstream Nile countries is the only way forward. Egypt’s water policy focuses on demand management, environmental protection and international joint projects to increase the water supply (e.g. Jonglei canal).

Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) is a multivariate method to elucidate the relationships between biological assemblages of species and their environment. The method is designed to extract synthetic environmental gradients from ecological data-sets. The gradients are the basis for succinctly describing and visualizing the differential habitat preferences (niches) of taxavia an ordination diagram. Linear multivariate methods for relating two set of variables, such as two-block Partial Least Squares (PLS2), canonical correlation analysis and redundancy analysis, are less suited for this purpose because habitat preferences are often unimodal functions of habitat variables. After pointing out the key assumptions underlying CCA, the paper focuses on the interpretation of CCA ordination diagrams. Subsequently, some advanced uses, such as ranking environmental variables in importance and the statistical testing of effects are illustrated on a typical macroinvertebrate data-set. The paper closes with comparisons with correspondence analysis, discriminant analysis, PLS2 and co-inertia analysis. In an appendix a new method, named CCA-PLS, is proposed that combines the strong features of CCA and PLS2.

In UK estuaries conflicts have routinely occurred between economic and conservation interests regarding shellfish such as cockles Cerastoderma edule and mussels Mytilus edulis. The harvest of these species is economically important, but shellfish also constitute the main overwinter food supply of the oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus. In this report we use a simplified spreadsheet model to predict the overwinter food requirements of oystercatchers in the Dee Estuary and compare the predictions of this model with those of an individual-based model which has been used to advise the setting of Total Allowable Catch in the Dee Estuary over recent years.
The models are based on the energy requirements of the birds and the energy value of their shellfish food. The spreadsheet model predicts the amount of shellfish required to maintain high survival rates within the oystercatcher population. The individual-based model predicts how the survival rate within the oystercatcher population is related to the amount of shellfish food and the amount removed by shellfishing. Although more complicated, the individual-based model represents the system in a more realistic way and can simulate specific shellfishing scenarios.
The models produced relatively similar predictions, especially when it was assumed that birds fed on upshore and terrestrial food in addition to cockles. As the biomass of cockles has declined since 2008, the models predicted that the amount required by the birds became close to the total available in 2012. The cockle biomass during 2013 was lower than that during 2012 and the spreadsheet model predicted that the birds required virtually all of the cockle stocks available.

This paper presents the results of studies into the use of the emerging techniques of nutrient induced fluorescence transients (NIFTs) and Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectroscopy to determine the nutrient status of microalgae. Four species of microalgae were grown under conditions where growth rate was P-limited or P-replete, and NIFT responses and FTIR spectra in response to the re-supply of P (as \( {\rm PO}^{3-}_4 \) ) measured. These responses were compared to more conventional measures of algal nutrient status such as P-uptake rates, P quotas and transient effects of \( {\rm PO}^{3-}_4 \) on oxygen exchange. The NIFT technique and FTIR spectroscopy gave results that were consistent with those obtained by the other techniques. Furthermore, we were able to demonstrate NIFT responses in phytoplankton samples taken from Lake Lucerne (total ambient P \( \le \) 0.13 μM) but not from Lake Zürich (total P 0.55 μM). The potential and limitations of the various techniques are discussed.

This 10-year field data study explores the relevance of water level fluctuations in driving the shift from a free-floating plant (FFP) to a phytoplankton dominated state in a shallow floodplain lake from the Lower Paraná River. The multi-year natural flood pulse pattern in the Lower Paraná River drove the ecosystem regime from a FFP-dominant state during very high waters (1998–1999) to absolute phytoplankton prevalence with blooms of nitrogen fixing Cyanobacteria during extreme low waters (2008–2009). Satellite images support the observed changes over the decade and show the decrease of the surface lake area covered by FFP as well as the modification of the spectral firm in open waters, which documents the significant increases in phytoplankton chlorophyll a concentrations. We discuss the possibility that, despite a slow eutrophication in these highly vegetated systems, water level changes and not nutrients account for the shift from a floating macrophyte community to phytoplankton dominance. Cyclic shifts may occur in response to the seasonal floodpulse, but more strongly, as indicated by our results, in association to the extreme drought and flood events related to the El Niño Southern Oscillation, which is linked to discharge anomalies in the Paraná River.
