Where could St. Petersburgers see and learn about works of art in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries? Most scholarly literature about this period dwells on the absence of art on public view in Russia's capital, relieved only by the triennial exhibitions at the Imperial Academy of Arts. Recent research, however, shows that exhibitions held before auctions and estate sales served as important venues for members of the literate classes to develop their knowledge of art and hone their connoisseurial skills. Because these exhibitions did not charge admission, nor require viewers to make purchases, they allowed non-elite classes the same opportunity to view art as the nobility who bought works for their collections. Drawing on newspaper announcements, sale inventories, and other primary sources, this paper will examine the role of these exhibitions in the development of taste and visual literacy in St. Petersburg before the mid-nineteenth century.

This study has conducted a comprehensive study of the flourishing art auction market in China from the perspective of industry clusters. After comparing the development of the Chinese art auction industry with the evolvement of the famed Manhattan borough in New York, this paper identified and recommended solutions for three critical problems encountered in some auction markets. The findings of our study promote mutually beneficial relationships among industry stakeholders, authorities, and art auction houses, as well as provide valuable reference for the overall development of the arts and cultural sector.

In January 2015, Christie’s announced that a painting by the Palestinian Suleiman Mansour, Camel of Burdens II (Jamal al-Mahamil), would be the highlight of its annual auction of modern and contemporary Arab, Iranian and Turkish art held in Dubai. The piece was listed as the second version of the 1973 original, which was thought to have belonged to Muammar al-Qaddafi, the long-time Libyan dictator, and to have been destroyed in the US bombing of his Tripoli military compound in 1986. An iconic portrayal of Palestinian steadfastness (sumud) in the struggle for a homeland, it was expected to sell for somewhere between $200,000 and $300,000.

In the valuation of works of art, the setting of a price is the last step, the result of a discursive attribution of quality; in this regard, aesthetic and commercial evaluations merge. The structure of this mediation is characterised by the concept of the “knowledge market;” knowledge that is ordered and able to spread is essential in order to stabilise the accumulation of value. The boundaries of this circulation of knowledge are fuzzy. It begins in the market and in museums, but also in scholarship. An extended definition of circulation must therefore consider not only objects, actors and money, but also knowledge itself and its media. Such a model of transnational exchange can accommodate both aesthetic and economic aspects. In this way it does not deal with the art market as a clearly separate sphere beyond the art world, but instead relates economic aspects to supposedly purely artistic ones.
In the nineteenth century there was considerable exchange between the Berlin and Paris art worlds, with a steady transfer of individuals, artworks and knowledge between the two metropoles. This is reflected in sources including exhibition catalogues, press articles, lists of pupils, address books and correspondence. However, documents from the art market also contribute to the picture of this transnational exchange.

The main aim of this work is to empirically verify whether purchases of works of art directly made by museums have any positive impact on the prices of other works by the same artist on the tertiary auction market. To analyze this aspect as one of the hedonic determinants of hammer prices at auctions of artworks by modern and contemporary Basque artists a combination of two datasets from different sources was used: that of the inventories of four public museums of the Basque country’s three chief cities plus the records of Vizcaya and Guipúzcoa Provincial Councils (Diputaciones Forales). Over the twentieth century until 2002 these institutions had acquired at least three works by 91 nineteenth and twentieth century Basque artists, a total number of 773 items, comprising 1,262 sculptures, paintings and drawings by 2002, when donations and loans are also counted. This information has enabled some innovative variables to be created for testing whether these public purchases had any impact on the price of the works auctioned. For this last purpose, a second dataset was constructed, commonly found in the literature on the price of works of art on the tertiary market, with the information contained in ArtPrice on 4,401 auctioned works by those same 91 artists – 2,092 of these bought - from 1985 to 2017. A two-level model was created with the combined data from both databases, as this seems statistically preferable to the usual hedonic single model because it allows proper separation of the intrinsic hedonic characteristics of the auctioned artworks (level 1) and of the plastic artists who created these (level 2). This exercise leads us to the conclusion that the average prices of artists’ works bought directly by Basque public collections have a significant impact on auction prices.

The course addresses the introduction and impact of interactions of art and economy as strategy to face fast changes and global challenges, exploring a bright spectrum of case-studies drawn from art movements, museums and business companies in the 20th and 21st century.

Dane te pozwalają czytelnikowi na zapoznanie się z rozmiarami tego rynku (obrót, liczba sprzedanych obiektów), charakterystyką nabywanych obiektów (rekordy cenowe, średnie ceny, popularni twórcy i okresy) oraz z trudnościami, które można napotkać podczas badania tego zjawiska. W podsumowaniu znalazły się przewidywania dotyczące dalszego rozwoju rynku.

The Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte (ZI) in Munich/Germany, was bestowed with an extensive collection of annotated catalogues of the Munich-based auction house Hugo Helbing. In total, this collection comprises 698 catalogues from 1895 until 1937; 345 of which are fully annotated, 144 are partially or The exhibition presents exemplarily some of the donated catalogues and provides information about the manifold activities of Hugo Helbing, the Jewish art dealer who was born in Munich on 23 April 1863 and who died here on 30 November 1938 from the effects of a brutal interrogation by the Gestapo (Secret State Police). infrequently annotated, and only 209 contain no entries or annotations.

The article analyses the state of the photography auction market in Poland on the basis of the sales in the period from the first photography auction (1996) until the end of 2011. The data allow the reader to discover the scale of this market (turnover, number of items sold), characteristics of purchased objects (price records, average prices, popular artists and periods) and the difficulties encountered when studying this phenomenon. The conclusion contains predictions on the further development of this market. The objective of the paper is to reconstruct the genesis, ideological background, course as well as effects of the auction Against Martial Law in Poland-for Solidarity [Gegen das Kriegsrecht in Polen für Solidarność]. This auction of works of art by then contemporary German artists took place on 13 November 1982 at the Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf. On the basis of an analysis of hitherto unpublished archival materials and press reports, I argue that this auction-against the background of other West-German pro-Solidarity initiatives-might be distinguished by its excellent organisation, precisely defined goals and considerable financial and, last but not least, media success. Under the aegis of a West German public institution, it was possible to consolidate both Polish and German societal and art- circles, and contemporary art became an effective vehicle that helped increase German interest in the idea of Solidarity.
