Asianism

Essay on discussions on Wilhelm Tell and José Rizal's translation of Friedrich Schiller's drama at Korean universities: Encounters with Korean renditions of the Tell's story lead the way into the international, east- and south-east-asian network of republican thinkers at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century.

This essay follows some traces of William Tell, the mythological hero and the literary figure of Friedrich Schiller, in Korean history and South Korean institutes of German Language and Literature. Based on the experience of a reading tour, I try to tackle the contradictory movements of national exclusivism and global connections that seem to converge in the networks of early East and Southeast Asian liberals – and the intellectual climate of today.

    In this well-known Homily of Melito of Sardis, "On Pascha", the features
of its linguistic style are noted which betray the strong influence of
the Second Sophistic movement and the stylistic current of Asianism.

The contributions of Korean and Taiwanese authors to the many and varied formulations of interwar pan-Asianism have so far remained a relatively unexplored subject of scholarly research, despite an unbroken interest in the trajectory of state-based Japanese pan-Asianism. Focusing on Korean students and independence activists, this article discusses alternative configurations of regional unity and solidarity that emanated from the interactions among Korean, Taiwanese, and other Asian actors who resided in Tokyo during the 1910s and 1920s. When the ethnic-nationalist interpretations of the Wilsonian principle of self-determination failed to materialize, a portion of anti-colonial activists in Asia began to emphasize the need for solidarity by drawing on what they perceived as traditional and shared " Asian " values. While challenging the Western-dominated international order of nation-states that perpetuated imperialism, such notions of Asian solidarity at the same time served as an ideology of liberation from Japanese imperialism. Examining journals published by Korean students and activists, including The Asia Kunglun, this article adds another layer to the history of pan-Asianism from below, a perspective that has often been neglected within the larger context of scholarship on pan-Asianism and Japanese imperialism in Asia.

Thanks to the Trilingual of Letoon, we know two deities : Basileus Kaunions, who was attested by few documents and Arggazuma, translated into Greek Arkesimas. As for this colloquium devoted to Anatolia in Mediterranea, we focused on Basileus Kaunios, also attested in Caria and Kos and Arggazuma and his Greek version Arkesimas, who seem to be evocated in Karpathos and other places. Added to this analysis of documents about Kaunian King, we are also presenting new translation and interpretation of the Lycian version of the Trilingual. Concerning Arggazuma, we have been interesting in new linguistical évidences and further remarks argued by O. Carruba, mainly about the suffix um(a) regarded as an ethnical one. So we are suggesting that Arggazuma may be considered as the King of Arggazuma. A research on Greek (or Graeco-Asianic) toponyms and anthroponyms clse to Arkesimas, may indicate that Arggazumean King has been adored in Caria, near Miletus, in Karpathas and perhaps also in Syria and Euboea.
