Baccharis

The commonest insect gall on Baccharis dracunculifolia (Asteraceae) leaves is induced by Baccharopelma dracunculifoliae (Hemiptera, Psyllidae). The gall-inducing insect attacks young leaves in both the unfolded and the fully expanded stages. Four developmental phases were observed in this type of gall: 1) A folding phase, during which the leaf lamina folded upward alongside the midrib and the edges of the upper portion of the leaf approached each other, forming a longitudinal slit. A single chamber was formed on the adaxial surface of the leaf; 2) A swelling phase, in which the folded leaf tissues thickened and the edges of the leaf drew closer together, narrowing the slit. In this phase the gall matured, turning succulent, fusiform and pale green. The spatial heterogeneity hypothesis has been invoked to explain the increase in species diversity from the poles to the tropics: the tropics may be more diverse because they contain more habitats and micro-habitats. In this paper, the spatial heterogeneity hypothesis prediction was tested by evaluating the variation in richness of two guilds of insect herbivores (gall-formers and free-feeders) associated with Baccharis dracunculifolia (Asteraceae) along a latitudinal variation in Brazil. The seventeen populations of B. dracunculifolia selected for insect herbivores sampling were within structurally similar habitats, along the N-S distributional limit of the host plant, near the Brazilian sea coast. Abstract:  The present study assessed the possible antinociceptive action of the hydroalcoholic extract, fractions and pure compounds obtained from the aerial parts of Baccharis illinita DC (Asteraceae) in behavioural models of chemical nociception in mice. The hydroalcoholic extract and fractions (hexane and aqueous but not EtOAc fraction) obtained from B. illinita (30–1000 mg/kg orally) produced a dose-related inhibition of the acetic acid-induced nociceptive response. However, the hexane fraction was more potent than the hydroalcoholic extract and the aqueous fraction. The hexane fraction derivatives baurenol, α-spinasterol and oleanolic acid (0.00001–10 mg/kg intraperitoneally) also caused potent inhibition of acetic acid-induced pain. The hexane fraction (300–1000 mg/kg orally) produced inhibition of both phases of formalin-induced pain. Moreover, the hexane fraction (30–600 mg/kg orally) also caused a dose-dependent inhibition of glutamate-induced pain. Nevertheless, the hexane fraction only at the dose of 300 mg/kg orally, produced partial inhibition of the paw oedema caused by carrageenan. Furthermore, the hexane fraction (300 mg/kg orally) caused inhibition of the nociceptive response induced by intrathecal injection of N-methyl-d-aspartic acid, α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid, tumour necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β. In contrast, the hexane fraction did not affect the biting response induced by the metabotropic or ionotropic glutamatergic receptor agonist (±)-1-aminocyclopentane-trans-1,3-dicarboxylic acid and kainate, respectively. In addition, the antinociception caused by the hexane fraction (300 mg/kg orally) in the acetic acid test was not affected by intraperitoneal treatment of mice with naloxone (a non-selective opioid receptor antagonist). The precise mechanism responsible for the antinociceptive effect of the hexane fraction remains unclear, but appears to be partly associated with an inhibition of glutamatergic transmission and an inhibition of pathways dependent on pro-inflammatory cytokines. Finally, baurenol, α-spinasterol and oleanolic acid have an important role in the antinociceptive effects of the hexane fraction. Moreover, the antinociceptive action demonstrated in the present study supports the ethnomedical uses of this plant.

Ethnopharmacologycal relevanceThe tea from the leaves of Baccharis illinita DC (Asteraceae family) is commonly used by the population as anti-inflammatory (including topically), protective gastric and anti-infectious. However, no studies have been done with this species to confirm its topical anti-inflammatory action.

The metal concentrations in a copper mine tailings and Desert broom (Baccharis sarothroides Gray) plants were investigated. The metal concentrations in plants, soil cover, and tailings were determined using ICP-OES. The concentration of copper, lead, molybdenum, chromium, zinc, arsenic, nickel, and cobalt in tailings was 526.4, 207.4, 89.1, 84.5, 51.7, 49.6, 39.7, and 35.6 mg kg−1, respectively. The concentration of all elements in soil cover was 10~15% higher than that of the tailings, except for molybdenum. The concentration of copper, lead, molybdenum, chromium, zinc, arsenic, nickel, and cobalt in roots was 818.3, 151.9, 73.9, 57.1, 40.1, 44.6, 96.8, and 26.7 mg kg−1 and 1214.1, 107.3, 105.8, 105.5, 55.2, 36.9, 30.9, and 10.9 mg kg−1 for shoots, respectively. Considering the translocation factor, enrichment coefficient, and the accumulation factor, desert broom could be a potential hyperaccumulator of Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn, As, and Ni.

In this study, the antiulcerogenic effect of essential oil from Baccharis dracunculifolia was evaluated using the model of acute gastric lesions induced by ethanol. The ulcerative lesion index (ULI) was significantly reduced by oral administration of the essential oil of B. dracunculifolia at doses of 50, 250 and 500 mg/kg which reduced the lesions by 42.79, 45.70 and 61.61%, respectively. The analysis of the chemical composition of the essential oil from B. dracunculifolia by GC showed that this was composed mainly of mono- and sesquiterpenes and the majority compound was nerolidol. Therefore, antiulcerogenic activity of nerolidol (50, 250 and 500 mg/kg) was investigated using ethanol-, indomethacin- and stress-induced ulcer models in rat. Baccharis articulata is native of América and traditionally used for the treatment of digestive disorders and urinary infections. Cytotoxicity of aqueous extracts of B. articulata was investigated in Vero cells. As the maximal non cytotoxic concentration has been established, this concentration has been used to evaluate antiviral and virucidal activities against Herpes suis virus type 1, member of the same subfamily of Herpes simplex virus. Aqueous extracts of B. articulata exhibited more than 95% of virucidal activity. These findings support their potential application as a disinfectant or antiseptic with low toxicity and provide a valuable knowledge to ethnopharmacology properties of Baccharis articulata.

Obesity is the main risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus. Secondary metabolites with biological activities and pharmacological potential have been identified in species of the Baccharis genus that are specifically distributed in the Americas. This study evaluated the effects of methanol extracts from Baccharis dracunculifolia DC. Asteraceae on metabolic parameters, satiety, and growth in monosodium glutamate (MSG) induced-obesity model rats. MSG was administered to 32 newborn rats (4 mg/g of body weight) once daily for 5 consecutive days. The aim of this paper was to investigate the effect of chlorogenic acid (5-caffeoylquinic acid, 5CQA), isolated from Baccharis oxyodonta, on the structure and pharmacological effect of secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) from Crotalus durissus terrificus. All in vitro and in vivo experiments were conducted using a purified sPLA2 compared under the same experimental conditions with sPLA2 : 5CQA. 5CQA induced several discrete modifications in the secondary structure and the hydrophobic characteristics of native sPLA2 that induced slight changes in the α-helical content, increase in the random coil structure, and decrease of fluorescence of native sPLA2. This study evaluated the effects of aqueous extracts of Baccharis trimera (Less.) DC (Asteraceae), colloquially known as carqueja, on egg production, and hatching rate of larvae of Rhipicephalus microplus. Plant samples were collected in Montes Claros, north of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Adult female ticks were distributed into 24 homogeneous groups of 10. The in vitro test was performed by immersing each group in 10 ml solutions of aqueous extracts at 50, 100, 150, or 200mg of fresh leaves ml(-1). These concentrations were compared with distilled water as negative control and a commercial product as positive control and the tests were repeated four times. The carqueja extract at concentrations of 150 and 200mg of fresh leaves ml(-1) showed 100% efficacy in inhibiting egg hatching and therefore could have potential as an acaricide.

Carqueja (Baccharis crispa Spreng.) has been primarily used as a medicinal plant around the world. Commercially, the essential oil content of carqueja leaves is the most valuable crop productivity variable. We evaluated the effect of irrigation management in different growing seasons on the essential oil content of carqueja leaves using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse located in Southern Brazil, where the crop was cultivated for two years in different growing seasons under six irrigation regimes: 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, 125%, and 150% of the reference crop evapotranspiration (T25, T50, T75, T100, T125, and T150, respectively). A seasonal pattern was observed in the number of metabolites of sesquiterpenes and phenolics in the essential oil extracted from the biomass; this outcome was correlated with irrigation regimes and air temperature. Principal component and hierarchical cluster analyses were used to discriminate the influence of abiotic conditions on secondary metabolite profiles. Spathulenol was the most abundant compound in the essential oils (95.43%) collected during the summer (December-March) season during the third harvest (H3) at T150. The essential oil content was 8.84% ± 0.05% and 10.52% ± 0.10% in summer and winter (June-September), respectively, with T100 at 45 and 46 days after planting.

Species of Baccharis exhibit antibiotic, antiseptic, wound-healing, and anti-protozoal properties, and have been used in the traditional medicine of South America for the treatment of several diseases. In the present work, the fractionation of EtOH extract from aerial parts of Baccharis uncinella indicated that the isolated compounds caffeic acid and pectolinaringenin showed inhibitory activity against Leishmania (L.) amazonensis and Leishmania (V.) braziliensis promastigotes, respectively. Moreover, amastigote forms of both species were highly sensible to the fraction composed by oleanolic + ursolic acids and pectolinaringenin. Caffeic acid also inhibited amastigote forms of L. (L.) amazonensis, but this effect was weak in L. (V.) braziliensis amastigotes. The treatment of infected macrophages with these compounds did not alter the levels of nitrates, indicating a direct effect of the compounds on amastigote stages. The results presented herein suggest that the active components from B. uncinella can be important to the design of new drugs against American tegumentar leishmaniases.

RDV-8 [C18H22N2O2S (ethyl 1-butyl-6-methyl-2-phenyl-4-thioxo-1,4-dihydropyrimidine-5-carboxylate)] is derived from the 4-thioxopyrimidine, and presents important clinical effects. The present study explored the RDV-8 effects in the proliferation of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), as well as in a pleurisy-induced rat model. PBMCs were directly plated in four different RDV-8 concentrations (0.0125, 0.025, 0.05 and 0.1 mg/mL). RDV-8 decreased cell proliferation and monocyte chemotactic protein 1 synthesis. The interleukin 1 levels and the cytotoxic effect were not significantly affected by RDV-8 treatment. In the carrageenan-induced pleurisy model, the RDV-8 (3 mg/kg) treatment induced a significant reduction in the exudate volume, in the polymorphonuclear leukocyte migration and in the pleural exudate NO levels. The results indicate that RDV-8 may have an immunomodulatory effect, as well as anti-inflammatory actions suggesting that it could represent a new strategy in the inflammatory response modulation.
