more"This article is centered around the investigation of Jocuma, o el cabo de San Antonio, a Cuban documentary film by José Antonio Sarol (1955), which evokes the life of some extremely poor families of the Westernmost side of the Island. After coming to terms with this one-reeler as well as with its context of production, the article analyzes the critical discourse that it encloses. But I also aim at comparing the film’s ethical, political and aesthetical posture with that of El mégano (Julio García Espinosa, 1955), a feature that is usually presented, in a rather disputable fashion, as the only politically committed work of the Cuban pre-revolutionary cinema.
Este artículo se centra en el estudio de Jocuma, o el cabo de San Antonio, un documental cubano, de José Antonio Sarol, estrenado en 1955 y que evoca la vida de algunas familias paupérrimas en el extremo occidental de la isla. Después de presentar este cortometraje olvidado y su contexto de producción, se analiza el discurso crítico que encierra y se trata de comparar su postura ética, política y estética con la de El mégano (Julio García Espinosa, 1955), película que suele ser considerada, de manera discutible, como la única obra comprometida del cine prerrevolucionario de Cuba."
