Belgrade residential architecture

The demolition of mass housing estates in Western countries initiated several questions regarding the heritage of Modern architecture, and how a global phenomenon failed in some countries. Regardless of their architectural values or even the fact that they are protected as cultural monuments, housing settlements in Great Britain, France etc. are under constant threat of being demolished, and a great many of them meet their fate as stigmatized places of poverty and crime. At the same time, similar architectural and urban achievements of the 1960s and 1970s in other countries have been recognized for their value and are treated as historic sites. New Belgrade was chosen as a case study for this article as an example of a more successfully realized concept. In this article we will try to determine whether New Belgrade was truly a successful concept, and if so, which factors influenced its positive development.

АПСТРАКТ: У историји београдске стамбене архитектуре и пројектантске праксе београдских архитеката, веома ретко се јављао пројектни задатак који је захтевао синтезу потпуно различитих функција, као што су становање и сликарски атељеи. Због своје комплексности и захтевности, био је велики изазов за сваког архитекту, који је морао складно да повеже ове различите намене у једну, јединствену архитектонску целину. Резултат тога је био специфичнo и иновативно решењe унутрашње организације простора, па самим тим и препознатљива архитектура објекта.
Предмет истраживања аутора овог рада је Дом београдских уметника у Париској ули-ци 14 у Београду (1956-1960), који је изграђен према нацртима тада младог и талентованог архитекте Мирослава Мирка Јовановића (1924-2003). Овај објекат комбинованих функција је један од ретких примера са наменски пројектованим становима за наше познате уметнике, у условима тадашње масовне стамбене изградње, и то као прва вишепородична стамбена заједница уметника у послератном Београду.
У раду су обрађене до сада непознате чињенице о настанку овог вредног архитектонског дела послератног модернизма у београдској средини, тумаче се полазне и прате даљe ауторове идеје у различитим фазама пројекта и у до сада необјављиваним, ручним скицама, те се даје нов поглед на Јовановићеву архитектуру у нашој историографији.

ABSTRACT: In the history of Belgrade's residential architecture and design practices of Belgrade architects , the requirement to achieve a complex synthesis of disparate functions, such as providing home space and housing painters' studios, was put forward rather rarely. This complex and demanding task is a great challenge for an architect, who must unite these diverse functions harmoniously into a single, unique architectural whole. As a result, a specific and innovative organization and, accordingly, a structure of distinctive architectural features are created.
The author’s research focuses on the House of Belgrade Artists in No. 14 Pariska Street in Belgrade (1956–1960), which was built according to the design of the young and talented architect Miroslav Mirko Jovanović (1924–2003). In the context of the mass housing construction schemes of the time, this building, which combines multiple functions, offers a rare example of dedicated apartments for famous local artists; this was the first multi-family residential unit for artists in post-war Belgrade.
The paper presents the so-far unknown facts about this valuable work of post-war modernist architecture in Belgrade. It interprets Jovanović's initial concepts and traces his ideas in various stages of the project through an analysis of his handmade sketches that have not been published before, offering an entirely novel perspective of his architecture in the local historiography.

This thesis looks at the construction of New Belgrade as an urban history narrative for the history of Yugoslavia. This is a study of the history of place and space, in conjunction with the history of Tito's Yugoslavia.

Beginning with the foundation for the new city, during the interwar period, the first chapter establishes an understanding of the purpose of the place during the Kingdom era. It then looks at the effect of the Second World War, and the establishment of the communist/socialist era under Josip Broz Tito. The following chapter looks at the Tito era from the split from the Cominform. It is an analysis of the creation of New Belgrade under Tito, and how it is representative of Yugoslavia’s differentiation from the Soviet Bloc. The final chapter examines New Belgrade following the Tito era, the impact of the collapse of Yugoslavia, NATO intervention and the rebuilding of New Belgrade in the 21st century.

Beograd je tokom međuratnog perioda doziveo ekspanziju stambene gradnje zahvaljujući velikom prilivu stanovništva iz cele zemlje. Hroničan nedostatak životnog prostora i stalno širenje grada izvan zakonskih granica prouzrokovali su donošenje strogih parametara na osnovu kojih će se sprovoditi urbanistički plan Beograda iz 1923. godine. U radu će biti reči o značajnijim ostvarenjima na polju stambene arhitekture u Beogradu 1926. godine kada je zabeležen najveći broj izrađenih objekata. Sredina treće decenije karakteristična je po tome da je u tom periodu vladao veliki diverzitet arhitektonskih stilova koji su bili posledica ukusa investitora, ali i različitih senzibiliteta projektanata. U tom periodu javljaju se nove tendencije, poput folklorizma, dok arhitekti pokazuju sklonost ka eksperimentisanju, što će dovesti do pojave moderne arhitekture već naredne godine. Kroz pregled projektantske delatnosti 1926. godine biće prikazani glavni tokovi beogradske međuratne arhitektonske scene.

Стамбена архитектура представља значајан извор за анализу развоја модерног друштва и архитектуре у међуратном Београду. Специфичан тип просторне организације станова и уређења ентеријера током треће и четврте деценије двадесетог века у великој мери одсликава свакодневни грађански живот. Централну просторију у ентеријеру чинио је салон, који је служио за примање гос-тију, представљајући јавни репрезентативни одељак у оквиру приватног животног простора. Салон, заједно с трпезаријом, често је био опремљен луксузним намештајем и предметима чија је сврха била да укажу на интелектуални и материјални статус власни-ка. Салони су били места окупљања интелектуалне елите Београда и одржавања бројних културних догађаја, попут књижевних и музичких вечери. abstract: The residential architecture is an important source for the study of the development of modern society and architecture in interwar Belgrade. A specific way of spatial organization of the apartments and their interior design in the third and fourth decades of the 20th century essentially reflect the everyday life. The central room was the lounge where guests were received, serving as a representative public space within the private living one. The lounge, together with the dining room, was often equipped with luxurious furniture and items intended to display the intellectual and social status of the owner. In these lounges Belgrade's intellectual elite gathered; numerous cultural events were organized there, like literary and music evenings. Research on turning private space into a public one represents a contribution to the understanding of the development of residential architecture, interior and furniture in Belgrade during the interwar period.

Алфред Меламед је сврставан у мало познате београдске архитекте о чијем животу и раду посто ји мало података. Међутим, спроведено истраживање показало је да је он имао плодну каријеру с неколико остварења високог квалитета. Циљ овог чланка је да стручну јавност боље упозна с његовим животом и радом. Студије архитектуре завршио је у Берлину, где је и започео своју пројектантску каријеру. Око 1933. године враћа се у родни Београд и отвара сопстве-ни биро. До почетка Другог светског рата, махом се бавио пројектовањем стамбених зграда које ће бити фокус овог рада. У Меламедовом београдском опусу посебно се истичу три дела: неизведена кућа у Пушкиновој 6 (1933), стамбено-пословна зграда у Савској 5 (1936) и стамбе-на зграда у Милоша Поцерца 34 (1939-1940). Меламедов архитектонски израз одликује приме-на иновативних материјала и решења у ликовној обради фасаде, али исто тако и просторна организација, што га може сврстати међу најистакнутије протагонисте београдског модернизма.
Architect Alfred Melamed is one of the lesser-known Belgrade architects and we have only a few data about his life and work. However, the conducted research has revealed that Melamed had a fruitful career with several high-quality achievements. Therefore, this paper aims to present more details about his life and work to a wider public. Melamed graduated in Berlin, where he also spent his first several years of designing career. He returned to his hometown Belgrade around 1933 where he set up his own designing office. Until the outbreak of World War II, Melamed mainly designed residential buildings, which will be the focus of this paper. From his Belgrade opus, three designs particularly stand out: the unfinished house in 6 Puškinova Street (1933), residential and commercial building in 5 Savska Street (1936) and the residential building in 34 Miloša Pocerca Street (1939-1940). Melamed's architectural expression is characterized by application of innovative materials and solutions in the decoration of façades but also in the spatial organization, which is why he could be included among the most eminent protagonists of modernism in Belgrade.

Predmet istraživanja predstavljenog u ovom radu je beogradski opus arhitekte Vladislava D. Vladisavljevića (1905–1961), pretežno nastao tokom četvrte decenije 20. veka. S obzirom na nedovoljnu pažnju posvećenu ovoj temi u dosadašnjoj istoriografiji, kao glavni fokus rada izdvojene su sistematska deskripcija i stilska analiza pojedinačnih objekata, koja teži kako da doprinese neophodnoj eksplikaciji i valorizaciji istih, tako i kreiranju jasnije i potpunije slike o pozicioniranju Vladislava Vladisavljevića na domaćoj arhitektonskoj sceni posmatranog perioda. Iako metodološki okvir pretpostavlja sintezu biografskog i istoriografskog pristupa, studija se u najvećoj meri oslanja na dostupnu građu pohranjenu u Istorijskom arhivu Beograda i fondu arhitekte u Zbirci za arhitekturu i urbanizam Muzeja grada Beograda. Konačan cilj rada jeste da upotpuni i produbi postojeća znanja, ali i da pruži određena nova saznanja, koja će voditi podrobnijim proučavanjima date teme.

Stvaralaštvo žena arhitekata u Beogradu između dva svetska rata predstavlja nedovoljno istraženu oblast u domaćoj istoriografiji. U prilog tome svedoči i do sada u potpunosti nepoznato stvaralaštvo Katarine Marković-Šajinović, koja je među prvim ženama arhitektama u Beogradu otvorila samostalni privatni biro. Iako su se i druge žene arhitekte bavile privatnom praksom, opus Katarine Marković-Šajinović, koji se sastoji od do sada identifikovanih 15 stambenih objektata, čini je do tada najproduktivnijom ženom arhitektom u domenu privatne prakse. Ovaj rad zato predstavlja prvi pokušaj osvetljavanja do sada gotovo u potpunosti nepoznatog života i rada arhitekte Marković-Šajinović, kao i valorizacije njene stambene arhitekture.

Историјско језгро и амбијенталне целине Београда обухватају и велики број стамбених објеката. Како је Београд доживео експанзију у изградњи током међуратног периода, стамбени фонд који баштинимо из тог периода је на завидном нивоу, упркос чињеници да је током Другог светског рата изгубљена трећина стамбених зграда.
Иако постоје прописи за различите степене заштите стамбених објеката, стање на терену показује да је стамбена архитектура међуратног периода у великој мери угрожена и подложна различитим видовима девастације, како у зонама под заштитом, тако и ван њих. Стамбени објекти најчешће су подложни илегалној и неадекватној надоградњи, драстичној промени фасаде прочеља, уклањању фасадне пластике, промени оригиналне дрвенарије неадекватном PVC столаријом, као и уклањању оригиналних улазних портала. Осим оваквих алтерација, велики проблем представљају и случајеви где су стамбени објекти у потпуности запуштени и неодржавани. Разлог за често неадекватно третирање стамбене архитектуре најчешће лежи у недвољној свести станара о значају очувања објеката у којима живе, као и честа финансијска немогућност да се стамбени објекти рестаурирају на адекватан начин. Иако београдске општине спроводе програм суфинансирања обнове фасада и улаза, ово решење није увек могуће и применљиво. Чешћи су случајеви самосталне интервенције станара, која махом доводи до одређеног степена девастације објекта. На крају, препознат је и проблем рушења значајних примера стамбене архитектуре међуратног периода ради подизања нових објеката за становање.
Овај рад ће бити посвећен критичком препознавању проблема очувања и заштите стамбених објеката на територији Београда из међуратног периода на основу теренског истраживања спроведеног у периоду од 2009. до 2017. године. У раду ће такође бити изнети и примери добре праксе, као и предлози побољшања стања стамбене архитектуре међуратног периода у Београду.

The subject of the research of this paper is the history and architecture of the palace that was built for the Serbian Crown Prince Mihailo Obrenovic, and that had been located within the central court complex of the Obrenovic Dynasty, in the immediate vicinity of Terazije Square in Belgrade. The attractive edifice lasted from 1860–1909
and was important marker in urban setting of Belgrade. The aim of the paper was to analyze and reconstruct the original appearance of this capital building on the basis of the scarce existing sources and available evidences. The edifice has been constructed with the idea of creating a royal residence that has been set within the framework
of modern understandings of a ruler‘s space. Even though it didn't become the actual home of Prince Mihailo Obrenovic it was built and equipped according to the functions and needs of the official princely court. The research focus was placed on the background and particular reasons for conceiving and constituting this kind of
representative architectural building of engaged rhetoric. Considering the social conditions, sudden and frequent changes within the political scene and changed understandings of the ruler’s authority within the framework of the 19th century Serbian state, we have tried to explain and argue reasons and circumstances that led Prince Milos to decide to build this type of ruling residence for his successor. The issue of metropolis wasn’t resolved until 1841. However, Serbian ruler was aware of the current European practice. We have reviewed historical backgrounds and
striving of Prince Milos Obrenovic to catch up with the European model when it comes to the ruler’s ideology within which the court, it position, architecture and design held an impact of extraordinary importance. At the same time, the attempt was made to point to the essential changes when it comes to the widespread belief in
attribution of the architectural design. We have challenged the authorship of Kosta Sreplovic that was set in the past and offered possible directions which would further point to new observations of authors‘ contributions and interpretations of European influences on the development of court architecture in our midst. The circumstances
surrounding the pulling down and complete deletion of this topos from the mental geography of the inhabitants of the Serbian capital were also considered. The architecture of the palace did not fit into ideological shift and desirable shape of the king’s court. Still, its initial idea lives through the fact that its place occupies the Presidential Palace, therefore it continues existing as an effective ruler’s topos.
