This paper offers a critical analysis of Rabbinic sources concerning the the history of Loshon HaQodesh. The paper first attempts to define the language known as "Loshon HaQodesh" and then trace its origins through Midrashic and Talmudic sources. The paper also follows the rise and decline of this language.
A more complete version of this paper was printed in Nov. 2014 under the name Lashon HaKodesh: History, Holiness, & Hebrew (Mosaica Press, 2014).

Throughout Rabbinic literature—the Talmud and the Midrash—a mysterious creature known as the Salamandra is mentioned. This creature is also mentioned by various early philosophers and scientists. It is reported to have been created in fire and therefore have fire-resistant capabilities. Other sources attribute the origins of the Salamandra to witchcraft. This discrepancy is elaborated upon and several methods of resolution are presented. Nonetheless, all these mythological stories seem to contradict the reality where no such creature is found. This paper explores and reconciles the differences between various descriptions of the Salamandra’s origin and its role in rabbinic literature. Many Classic Rabbinic sources (from Medieval to contemporary) have been used throughout this work to illustrate the Salamandra’s significance in Jewish theology and laws of purity.

Bulgakov’s psychological and spiritual evolution can be reckoned as representative for his entire generation. Moving from Marxism to Idealism and finally conceiving his best known theory, namely Sophiology, he was considered by many one of the most influential and sometimes controversial Orthodox thinkers of the 20th century. The theory of Sophiology, his most disputed premise which lies at the center of his theological vision, is considered “a systematic attempt to work out the basis on which political action and policy could be seen as philosophically – and, eventual, theologically - legitimate” . If we reflect on our present cultural and political context we will find a renewed relevance in studying the evolution of Bulgakov’s theological and politic thought, due to the similarities of both periods. Just like in the last turn of the century, we also face issues of legitimacy of the political action, a new cultural paradigm and an economical crisis.

La persona e l’insegnamento di Gesù Cristo e l’idea veterotestamentaria della sapienza

Siamo abituati ad osservare la persona e l’insegnamento di Gesù dal punto di vista profetico: in Gesù, vale a dire, si realizzarono tutte la profezie veterote-stamentarie. È plausibile affermare che in Lui si siano compiuti anche gli scritti sapienziali dell’Antico Testamento? La Bibbia ebraica usa diversi termini per esprimere l’idea della sapienza, tra questi, i più usati sono quelli con radice ḥkm, che si riferiscono tanto alla sapienza e alle capacità umane quanto alla sapienza che proviene da Dio. Nel corso della storia del pensiero veterotestamentario l’idea della sapienza fu personificata e immaginata come un essere di sesso femminile: una donna giovane che attira l’attenzione dei giovani, una donna vecchia che conosce bene la vita, una sorella, una moglie o una fidanzata. Nei testi biblici si possono notare delle tensioni nell’immagine della sapienza personificata: infatti Essa è contempora-neamente umana e divina, creata ed eterna. Queste
tensioni sono l’evidente te-stimonianza di come gli giografiintuissero che nella Sapienza Divina c’era mol-to più di quanto la loro fede monoteistica permettesse loro di esprimere e cioè il mistero della Sapienza Divina che sarà poi rivelato nel Nuovo Testamento: Gesù Cristo che col suo insegnamento, portò alla perfezione la sapienza umana, e nel contempo rivelò se stesso quale vera Sapienza di Dio personificata.

The interaction between Biblical Hebrew studies, on the one hand, and theoretical linguistics, on the other, is not novel and spans dozens of years of scholarity. In most of these works, the main focus is on the study of the Hebrew language of the Bible by applying tools provided by linguistic theory—be it formal or cognitive—with the purpose of improving the description of the data and proposing analyses to particular linguistic phenomena. Edit’s aspiration of bringing the two worlds of study closer together was however different: it was about the belief that linguistic theory can, in turn, benefit from the study of an
ancient language, such as Biblical Hebrew.

I propose that Comparative Cultural Studies, a hybrid field of scholarship grounded in critical humanities and social sciences which seeeks to make explicit connections between culture and society, is an appropriate theoretical frame in which to study paremiology, as I shall illustrate through a case study of the fourteenth-century Libro de Buen Amor.  The Libro, which contains some 400 proverbs, is an excellent source for studying the oral-textual dynamic between canonized works and oral discourses. Specifically, the Libro’s parodic use of proverbs also serves as an anti-discourse that humorously distorts both the trite oral authority of traditional proverbs and simultaneously the hackneyed textual authority of the cuaderna vía verse in which it is written.  I shall analyze a variety of proverbs in the work to illustrate how lost meanings can be recuperated through comparative cultural studies, in particular in relation to gender ideologies. Unusual features of my study will include comparative study of proverbs collected from twentieth-century Hungarian speakers, as well as the theoretical retrieval of several “silent” proverbs in the Libro, which do not actually appear in the surface text but clearly contribute to its deep structure.

ABSTRACT

The historical-critical method that characterizes academic biblical studies too often remains separate from approaches that stress the history of interpretation, which are employed more frequently in the area of Second Temple or Dead Sea Scrolls research. Inaugurating the new Eisenbrauns series, Critical Studies in the Hebrew Bible, A More Perfect Torah explores a series of test-cases in which the two methods mutually reinforce one another. The volume brings together two studies that investigate the relationship between the composition history of the biblical text and its reception history at Qumran and in rabbinic literature.

The Temple Scroll is more than the blueprint for a more perfect Temple. It also represents the attempt to create a more perfect Torah. Its techniques for doing so are the focus of part 1, entitled “Revelation Regained: The Hermeneutics of KI and 'IM in the Temple Scroll.” This study illuminates the techniques for marking conditional clauses in ancient Near Eastern literature, biblical law, and the Dead Sea Scrolls. It also draws new attention to the relationship between the Temple Scroll’s use of conditionals and the manuscript’s carefully organized spacing system for marking paragraphs. Syntax serves as a technique, no less than pseudepigraphy, to advance the Temple Scroll’s claim to be a direct divine revelation.

Part 2 is entitled “Reception History as a Window into Composition History: Deuteronomy’s Law of Vows as Reflected in Qoheleth and the Temple Scroll.” The law of vows in Deut 23:22-24 is difficult in both its syntax and its legal content. The difficulty is resolved once it is recognized that the law contains an interpolation that disrupts the original coherence of the law. The reception history of the law of vows in Numbers 20, Qoh 5:4–7, 11QTemple 53:11–14, and Sipre Deuteronomy confirms the hypothesis of an interpolation. Seen in this new light, the history of interpretation offers a window into the composition history of the biblical text.

The volume shows the significance of syntax and historical linguistics for understanding how ancient scribes established claims of religious and textual authority. Appendixes on the use of conditionals in biblical law and the Dead Sea Scrolls provide resources for further research.

"This cutting-edge monograph is the first in the new Eisenbrauns series Critical Studies in the Hebrew Bible. It is presented in two parts, the first of which, 'Revelation Regained: The Hermeneutics of ky and 'm in the Temple Scroll', was co-authored with Molly Zahn. By examining the syntax, linguistic forms, and the spacing system employed, the authors explain the replacement of the conditional particle ky ('if') in Deuteronomy with 'm ('if' or 'when') in 11QT as the redactor's desire to resolve the inconsistent arrangement and awkward content of the pre-existing laws. This textual sprucing was further accompanied by re-presenting the speeches of Moses as direct divine revelation, to construct a superior and definitive finished product for the Temple Scroll's audience(s). A separate analysis of the reception of Deuteronomy's law of vows (in Num. 20, Qoh. 5.4-7, 11QT 53.11-14 and Sifre Deut.) is then shown to illuminate the compositional history of the earlier biblical forms. This is a highly persuasive and compelling study, less accessible to non-specialists, but essential reading for understanding the development of authoritative Judaean texts in the Second Temple Period."

“In the final analysis, this short book about biblical literature should challenge scholars of rabbinic Judaism in a number of productive ways. First, the book’s daunting melding of hermeneutics with historical linguistics argues against the separation of labor that currently characterizes a great deal of work on rabbinic Judaism. Second, the book convincingly destabilizes the categories of scripture and rewritten scripture. This is not only a helpful reminder that the history of biblical exegesis begins before scripture was fixed. By showing how the earliest exegetical impulses have impacted biblical texts, Levinson is shaking the canonical foundation on which many histories of biblical exegesis begin. Third, the book demonstrates what can be seen by working both forward and backward through time. A great deal of scholarship on rabbinic Judaism is structured chronologically—from the Torah to the Talmud. There are plenty of good reasons for this, and certainly no justification for wholesale change. Indeed, the first chapter of the present work is perfectly chronological. Ziel der Arbeit ist eine möglichst umfassende Auslegung der Perikope Mal 3,13-21. Methodisch folgt die Dissertation dabei dem von Hubert Irsigler im Anschluß an Wolfgang Richter entwickelten Programm, das traditionelle historisch-kritische Analyseverfahren mit Methoden der literaturwissenschaftlichen Textuntersuchung verbindet.
Ansatzpunkt ist die möglichst konsequente Analyse des Einzeltextes, um zu vermeiden, vorschnell von einem von anderswoher vorgefaßten vermeintlichen Wissen über den Text auszugehen. Dazu gilt es zunächst, den Textbestand text- und literarkritisch zu sichern (Kritik der Textkonstitution). Dann wird im Rahmen der Kritik der Textindividualität die Struktur des Einzeltextes erhoben, d.h. die sprachliche Ausdrucksform auf den aufeinander aufbauenden Ebenen der Worte und Wortfügungen, der Sätze und Satzfügungen und schließlich des Gesamttexts. Untersuchungsgegenstand sind hier u.a. die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von geprägter, dem Autor vorgegebener Sprachkonvention und seiner originellen Ausdrucksleistung, die Feststellung der ausdrucksorientierten (Metrum, Chiasmus, Inklusio usw.) und inhaltsorientierten (Metaphern, Metonymien, Vergleiche, Ironie usw.) rhetorischen Stilmittel, die Beschreibung der Personen und Sprecherrollen und die Analyse des thematischen und wirkfunktionalen Textaufbaus.
Daran schließt sich die Kritik der Textbedeutung an: Es geht in einem ersten Schritt um die Klärung der Semantik der einzelnen Wörter und Fügungen und dann der semantischen Zusammengehörigkeit von Textelementen, die sich – in auf Greimas zurückgehender Terminologie – zu „Isotopieebenen“ fügen, aus deren Beziehung zueinander sich die Textsemantik aufbaut. Die Analyse der Textpragmatik stellt dann die mit den textuellen Äußerungen verbunden Intentionen und Wirkabsichten der textuellen Sprecher fest. Methodisch geschieht sie durch die Anwendung der auf die von Austin und Searle in ihren Arbeiten zur „Sprechakttheorie“ zurückgehenden Kategorisierungen in den aufeinander aufbauenden Ebenen von Satzsyntax, Satzsemantik und Kontextsemantik.
In der Zusammenschau aller genannten Analyseschritte tritt das strukturale und thematische Profil des Einzeltextes hervor: Die bis auf den Narrativ in V. 16 als JHWH-Rede stilisierte Perikope wendet sich in V. 13-15 an die Gruppe der „Gottesfürchtigen“ als Adressaten und zitiert deren als Rückschau formulierte Anfechtungserfahrung, daß ihre durch das Wohlergehen der Frevler kontrastierte materielle Notlage sie am Sinn ihrer scheinbar zweck- und folgenlosen Frömmigkeit irre werden läßt. Der Bericht von der Zuwendung JHWHs zu den Klagenden in V. 16 markiert eine Wende: In den folgenden V. 17-21 wird den gegenwärtig bedrängten Adressaten ein von JHWH heraufgeführter und vor allem durch das metonymische Motiv vom „Tag JHWHs“ (vgl. V. 17a.19a.21b) und die Metapher von der „Sonne der Gerechtigkeit“ (vgl. V. 20a-b) beschriebener Heilszustand angekündigt, der durch die Vernichtung der gegnerischen Gruppe der „Frevler“ besiegelt werden wird. JHWH läßt sich also von der Klage der „Gottesfürchtigen“ bewegen und faßt sie als Appell auf, für die angemessene Tatfolge ihres Verhaltens zu sorgen, dem er in naher Zukunft (vgl. V. 17aR.19a.b.21bR) zu folgen verspricht.
In einem zweiten Anlauf wird dann der Text in seiner Relation zu anderen Texten betrachtet (Kritik der Texttypik) und daraufhin befragt, ob und in welcher Weise er bekanntes und geprägtes Material aufgreift. Zunächst geht es dabei um die Typik des sprachlichen Ausdrucks. Wichtiger ist aber die Frage, welche geprägten Motive und Traditionen der Text aufgreift und in welcher Weise (konventionell oder innovativ) er sie einsetzt. Das Schwergewicht dieses Analysebereichs liegt auf der Darstellung des in der Metapher von der „Sonne der Gerechtigkeit“ in Mal 3,20a-b vorausgesetzten Kulturwissens über die – alttestamentlich rezipierte – altorientalische Solartheologie und über die Ikonographie der Flügelsonne. Außerdem geht die Studie auf die Einordnung der Textaussage von Mal 3,13-21 in die geprägten Themen der „Gottesfurcht“, des „Tun-Ergehen-Zusammenhangs“ und der Frage nach dem „Lohn der Frömmigkeit“ angesichts des „Glücks der Frevler“ sowie nach der Verwendung des prophetischen Motivs vom „JHWH-Tag“ ein. Dabei zeigt sich, daß der Autor die aufgegriffenen Traditionen in Einzelzügen durchaus in origineller Weise adaptiert. Die für das theologische Textprofil und das textuelle Gottesbild bedeutsame Ankündigung des in baldiger Zukunft zu erwartenden Eingreifens JHWHs zugunsten der Frommen steht den theologischen Antworten auf die Theodizeefrage etwa in Gen 18,16c-33; Ps 37; 49 nahe, während andere Texte wie Jer 12,1-5; Ps 73; Ijob 1,1-2,13 + 42,7-17 – im einzelnen auf unterschiedliche Weise – die traditionellen Kategorien für das Eintreten der Folge rechten Handelns zugunsten eines vollkommenen Vertrauens in den menschlichen Erwartungen unzugänglichen Willen JHWHs aufgeben und damit eine noch weiter fortgeschrittene Theologisierung der Tatfolgenauffassung als Reaktion auf das Dilemma der enttäuschten Erwartung einer Realisierung des Tun-Ergehen-Zusammenhangs zeigen, was eine konzeptionelle Einordnung des Untersuchungstexts in eine frühe Phase der Reflexion über das Thema gebietet.
Eine weitere Klärung gilt der Strukturtypik des Abschnitts, also der „Gattungsfrage“ des seit dem einschlägigen Artikel von Egon Pfeiffer, „Die Disputationsworte im Buche Maleachi“, EvTh 19 (1959) 546-568, wie auch die übrigen Redeeinheiten des Mal-Buchs gewöhnlich als „Disputationswort“ angesprochenen Textes. Mithilfe der Definitionen vor allem von Adrian Graffy, A Prophet Confronts His People. The Disputation Speech in the Prophets (AnBib 104; Rom 1984) und durch den Vergleich verschiedener in der exegetischen Literatur als Disputationsworte bezeichneter, sich aber in ihrer textpragmatischen Strategie unterscheidenden Perikopen wird dafür plädiert, nur bei einem expliziten Zitat (wie es innerhalb von Mal 3,13-21 in V. 14b-15 vorliegt) einer diskursiv widerlegten Meinungsäußerung von „Disputationswort“ zu sprechen und die argumentative Zurückweisung einer nur implizit mitgeteilten Meinung oder Einschätzung als „Argumentationswort“ zu bezeichnen.
Das außertextliche Umfeld kommt anschließend mit der Analyse der Textverankerung in den Blick, die auf die Feststellung der soziokulturellen Umstände der Textentstehung, die Verwendung des Texts in der Entstehungssituation sowie von Zeit und Ort der Entstehung abzielt. Dabei zeigt sich, daß es sich bei dem für Mal 3,13-21 kennzeichnenden Gegensatz zwischen den antagonistischen Gruppen der reichen „Frevler“ und der sozial benachteiligten Frommen um einen Topos der alttestamentlichen Literatur während der durch die perserzeitliche Steuer- und Sozialordnung hervorgerufenen sozioökonomischen Krise im 5. Jh. handelt, die den Hintergrund der Textentstehung abgibt. Damit läßt sich als Wirkabsicht des textuellen prophetischen Sprechers und damit des Verfassers das Bemühen erkennen, den von der sozio-ökonomischen Krise zur Zeit des Zweiten Tempels benachteiligten Bevölkerungsschichten Mut zuzusprechen, ihr Vertrauen in das gerechte Wirken JHWHs neu zu stärken und auch ihre Gruppenidentität durch die Zusicherung einer ihnen geltenden heilvollen Zukunft, die durch die Bestrafung und Vernichtung der antagonistischen Gruppe der „Frevler“ kontrastiert wird, zu profilieren.
Die Kritik der Textgeschichte versucht den mündlichen und literarischen Wachstumsprozeß unter Verwendung der bei der Literarkritik und der Analyse von Texttypik und Textverankerung gewonnenen Einsichten, die etwaige redaktionelle Interessen erkennen lassen, nachzuzeichnen.
Die Untersuchung der Wirkungsgeschichte läßt schließlich das den in der Entstehungssituation intendierten und wahrgenommenen Textsinn übersteigende Bedeutungspotential des Texts erkennen und trägt dadurch zu einer erweiterten Wahrnehmung seines Sinns bei. Die – bei der Analyse der Textindividualität beschriebenen – relativ vagen text- und rededeiktischen Hinweise der Perikope, besonders die nur generischen und damit für eine Vielzahl von konkreten Identifikationen offenen Rollenbeschreibungen sowie die große assoziative Transparenz vor allem der solaren Heilsmetaphorik in V. 20a-b, ermöglichen eine Übertragung der Textaussage auf andere Situationen als die der Textentstehung: Die Kontrastierung des in V. 13-15 als Anfechtungs- und Noterfahrung geschilderten Ausbleibens des Lohns der Frömmigkeit mit der Heilsankündigung in V. 17-21 ist transparent für im Grunde jede menschliche Kontingenz- und Anfechtungserfahrung, in der das helfende Eingreifen Gottes erhofft wird. Besonders deutlich wird die Offenheit der Perikope für die Interpretation als eine grundsätzliche Aussage über das Heilswirken Gottes in der patristischen Rezeption der Metapher von der „Sonne der Gerechtigkeit“ in V. 20a als Christussymbol: Auch wenn der Vers dort meist ohne Bezug zu seinem Kontext zitiert wird, ist dabei die durch den Textverlauf von Mal 3,13-21 indizierte Funktion der Metapher als ein die vorausgehende Notsituation wendendes Heilsereignis vorausgesetzt, und sie wird dementsprechend mit dem Christusgeschehen als dem Heilsereignis schlechthin identifiziert.
