Health care sector grows tremendously in last few decades. The health care sector has generated huge amounts of data that has huge volume, enormous velocity and vast variety. Also it comes from a variety of new sources as hospitals are now tend to implemented electronic health record (EHR) systems. These sources have strained the existing capabilities of existing conventional relational database management systems. In such scenario, Big data solutions offer to harness these massive, heterogeneous and complex data sets to obtain more meaningful and knowledgeable information. Media industries and advertisers are increasingly turning to big data analytics to better understand audience media consumption patterns, as evidenced by Canada's Globe and Mail's applications Sophi and TasteGraph. [1, 2]. Data analytics and interface design provide complementary perspectives for large datasets. HCI design principles have been applied to Business Intelligence (BI) platforms, including techniques which filter and summarize large data sets, and are equally relevant to media informatics platforms for advertisers, buyers, sellers, and planners [8, 9, 1, 7]. This analysis becomes more challenging when managing highly scalable and multi-dimensional audience survey data [3, 4, 5, 6]. According to Dewdney and Ride visualization tools are essential for effective decision making in the communications industry as these ease cognitive load and decision-making [15]. Kirk proves that a visualization system becomes a successful tool when it builds on the user's extant domain knowledge, providing enhanced insights [13]. The research aims to leverage visualization design principles as defined by Tulp and Meirelles [6, 7] and in order to improve the UI/UX and visual analytic capabilities of a leading media analytics platform providing planners, advertisers, and media buyers with an interface to better understand their audience. We have analyzed and assessed the different application report parameters that explore television and radio survey datasets from a leading analytics firm. We propose design prototypes which are comprised of enhanced symbolic icons [9] through badges and glyphs, consistent colours [10], and layouts which maintain a visual hierarchy and filtration techniques [10, 11, 14] in order to minimize information clutter and cognitive overload. We propose a variety of interface designs that address user needs using HCI, heuristic design principles and novel visualization techniques [6, 7, 12, 15]. Next steps include validating our design prototypes through rigorous user testing and building high fidelity prototypes.

Big data analytics uses efficient analytic techniques to discover hidden patterns, correlations, and other insights from big data. It brings significant cost advantages, enhances the performance of decision making, and creates new products to meet customers’ needs. This method has various applications in plants, bioinformatics, healthcare, etc. It can be improved with various techniques such as machine learning, intelligent tools, and network analysis. This chapter describes applications of big data analytics in biological systems. These applications can be conducted in systems biology by using cloud-based databases (e.g., NoSQL). The chapter explains the improvement of big data technology in plants community with machine learning. Furthermore, it presents various tools to apply big data analytics in bioinformatics systems. Medical signal and genomics are two major fields in healthcare environments that would be improved by this type of analytical method. Finally, the chapter discusses on several use cases of healthcare information system.

We present a prototype for a Tangible User Interface designed for interactive data visualization, which we believe will be useful for facilitating collaborative work in data analytics. Our hybrid system combines a tabletop graspable user interface with a twodimensional screen display; the users interrogate the data by manipulating tokens on the tabletop and the screen displays the results of the user's query. The objects are tagged using fiducial markers, which are identified with open-source ReacTIVision computer vision software, and the visualization code is written in Processing. In this demonstration, we use radio station listener demographic data, but the system can be used to query various data sets.

Visualization and visual analytics tools can provide critical support for experts and stakeholders to understand transportation flows and related human activities. Correlating and representing quantitative data with data from human actors can provide explanations for patterns and anomalies. We conducted research to compare and contrast the capabilities of several tools available for visualization and decision support as a part of an integrated urban informatics and visualization research project that develops tools for transportation planning and decision making. For this research we used the data collected by the StudentMoveTO (Toronto) survey which was conducted in the fall of 2015 by Toronto's four universities with the goal of collecting detailed data to understand travel behaviour and its effect on the daily routines of the students. This paper discusses the usefulness of new software which can allow designers to build meaningful narratives integrating 3D representations to assist in Geo-spatial analysis of the data.

ENGL: This article has two objectives: the first is to describe the different types of re- mediation created through “Media Visualization” as practiced by Lev Manovich and the “Cultural Analytics Lab”. We will analyze two ways in which vast collections of archived images (Big Visual Data) are visualized – as montages and diagrams –, posing the hypothesis that these visualizations function as an analysis of the visual archive through specifically visual and topological means. The issue of visual metalanguage will be broached. The second objective is to understand whether and how this genre of analytical visualizations, which uses “distant reading” techniques, can work in conjunction with a semiotic analysis of the image (a “close reading”).

Existing technologies for transportation planning, urban design, and decision-making have not kept pace with rapid urbanization. Visualization and analysis tools can help by combining qualitative, quantitative, and historical urban data – helping experts understand the system of systems of the modern city. Incorporating insights from experts in several relevant fields, we have derived a performance specification for visualization tools supporting general transportation planning problems . We examine two existing technologies against the specification – Betaville and StoryFacets – and recommend adapting them as first-generation urban system analysis/planning support tools. We also suggest guidelines for the next generation of tools for transportation planning.

Visual analytic tools, combined with social networks and mobile platforms, make it possible to create multi-dimensional, holistic pictures of people's health care and condition and expand the scope of information addressed in medical records. The Care and Condition Monitor (CCM) is a tablet-based, networked visual analytics tool for collecting, structuring and analyzing informal and qualitative healthcare data and visualizing it in a circular format. It illustrates how social communication within teams of caregivers enables capturing of longitudinal informal data that can (a) result in rich and meaningful information visualizations, (b) improve comprehension of healthcare data and changes in condition over time, and (c) support medical decision making.

We begin with the premise that data literacy is a fundamental facet of citizen education in this information age, and that an engaged citizenry in a democracy not only requires access to data, but also the capacity to manipulate and examine the data from multiple perspectives. The visualization of data elucidates trends and patterns in the phenomena that the data represents, and opens accessibility to understanding complicated human and natural processes represented by data sets. Research indicates that interacting with a visualization amplifies cognition and analysis. A single visualization may show only one facet of the data. To examine the data from multiple perspectives, engaged citizens need to be able to construct their own visualizations from a data set. Many tools for data visualization have responded to this need, allowing non-data experts to manipulate and gain insights into their data, but most of these tools are restricted to the computer screen, keyboard, and mouse. Cognition and analysis may be strengthened even more through embodied interaction with data. We present here the rationale for the design of a tool that allows users to probe a data set, through interactions with graspable (tangible) three-dimensional objects, rather than through a keyboard and mouse interaction. We argue that the use of tangibles facilitates understanding abstract concepts, and facilitates many concrete learning scenarios. Another advantage of using tangibles over screen-based tools is that they foster collaboration, which can promote a productive working and learning environment. We speculate that collaborative data exploration can be a productive educational activity for citizens in their communities and in the classroom, and we suggest our tool as a means to do this.

The Sophi Heads-up Display (HUD) is an analytics tool developed for editors at Canada's The Globe and Mail newspaper that overlays relevant data about articles' performances onto The Globe and Mail website. We describe the motivation for our research, our design process (which includes initial needs assessment through semi-structured interviews with editors, and job shadowing), and the validation of features with users. We then discuss the ongoing iterations of the Sophi HUD and how its design was informed through collaboration with The Globe and Mail employees.

As a response to the current navigational format of online news, which is linear, chronological, and heavily delineated by topics, we propose a more discursive and heuristic model of navigation that will offer readers a variety of lenses, interpretations, and pathways to read through a news site. Through an analysis of two prominent discursive models of knowledge-Foucault's Discursive Formations and Deleuze and Guattari's Rhizome-we can determine an organizational framework that is more representative of human memory and associative connections. This discursive framework is put into practice through the interactive and exploratory medium of data visualization, shown in a sketch-based format.

We present a method by which to convert a large corpus of website traffic data into interactive and practical taste graph visualizations. The website traffic data lists individual visitors' level of interest in specific pages across the website; it is a tripartite list consisting of anonymized visitor ID, webpage ID, and a score that quantifies interest level. Taste graph visualizations reveal psychological profiles by revealing connections between consumer tastes; for example, an individual with a taste for A may be also have a taste for B. We describe here the method by which we map the web traffic data into a form that can be displayed as interactive taste graphs, and we describe design strategies for communicating the revealed information. In the context of the publishing industry, this interactive visualization is a tool that renders the large corpus of website traffic data into a form that is actionable for marketers and advertising professionals. It could equally be used as a method to personalize services in the domains of government services, education or health and wellness.

The interactive visualization of topic models is a promising approach to summarizing large sets of textual data. Topicks is the working title for a means to visualize topic modelling outputs. Incorporating a radial layout, users can view the relationships between topics, terms and the corpus as a whole. Interacting with topic and term nodes, as well as a related bar chart, provides the user with various ways to manipulate the visualization and explore the data. We describe the visualization and potential user interactions before discussing future work.
