Although artificial intelligence is the product of science-fiction literature, it currently represents a significant branch of computer science dealing with intelligent behavior, machine learning, and machine adaptation. It has become a discipline that attempts to answer real-world problems. Artificial intelligence systems are nowadays widely used in economics and medicine, design or military. The role of archives is changing worldwide. In this grandiose transformation, archives need to be at the forefront of their own future, so that they can steer, guide, and not lose out.
The vast masses of information in archives provide an excellent platform for the exploitation of artificial intelligence. The mass of data can be a great help not only for research but also for policy preparation and in some areas of public administration in the not too distant future.

Çalışmayı özgün kılan bir sosyal bilimci tarafından, sosyal bilim araştırmacıları ve  veriye dayalı strateji üretmek isteyen özel sektör temsilcileri için hazırlandı.

Bilimsel bir metodolojiye sahip olmasına rağmen makine öğrenmesi adeta günlük konuşma diline çevrildi. Hikâyeleştirme teknikleri kullanılarak uygulamalar anlatıldı. Eğlenceli bir dil kullanıldı.
Makine öğrenmesinin formüller ve teorik arka planından ziyade sonuçlarına ve uygulayıcı için günlük hayattaki karşılıklarına odaklanıldı. Uzun sıkıcı anlatımlar yerine şema ve görseller kullanıldı.

The 8th SPARKS session is interested in discussing innovative manners in which artists, technologists, researchers, and practitioners, express their visions of the impact and effects of data in art and science. With this goal in mind, the primary materials that the session seeks to highlight are visual media and visual methods that help, amplify, or challenge our visual perception and human interpretation.

For the data center industry, efficiency is an imperative and a struggle. Machines require constant power and cooling, yet often have very low utilization rates, where jobs are actually being computed. To improve efficiencies, Alibaba began co-allocating jobs on the same array of machines and released datasets from this production cluster. This article explores this dataset via a series of data visualization. These images show, even on its own narrow terms, the dataset fails to achieve the vision of efficiency. The high diversity of job lengths and types create unevenness and conflict in the data center—work itself disrupts optimal efficiency. For the industry, efficiency should best be handled by machines, with automation freeing up operators for higher-level, higher-impact tasks. However, the logic of efficiency may itself be questioned. Efficiency introduces a particular framing, defining a problem, establishing a goal, and offering a compelling road map forward. If efficiency is clarifying, it is also obfuscating, bracketing out alternative ways of understanding these sociotechnical systems. As hyperscale technology companies dominate data centers, often what is becoming more efficient are exploitative or extractive operations. Efficiency should then be challenged, but without falling back to a familiar valorization of inefficiency. As the data center grows in significance while decentering human labor, it becomes important to develop a critical theorization of efficiency attuned to the new conditions of this machine-centric future.

A major difficulty in volumetric data rendering is finding good transfer functions to display the regions of interest within a volume. We introduce a method that automatically detects boundaries, improves the segmentation of each boundary, and finally generates a transfer function that minimizes occlusion of the boundaries. This method applies mean shift clustering on LH space, and then generates polygons which approximate the resulting clusters on the LH histogram. Each polygon represents a boundary surface of the volume and can be easily modified to obtain the desired visualization. A post-processing step using region growing further improves the segmentation result. The transfer function is generated automatically based on the size and location of the boundaries to minimize occlusions. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated in our experiments.

Can design play a role in the scientific process of generating insights? To answer this question, we need to explore how two often-separated fields, data science and visualization design , can influence each other and create new insights through images. First off, we need to delve into the meaning of "design." The origins of the word are based in the Italian word disegno and the Latin word designare. Both can be translated as "to mark out" or, more literally, "de-sign." 1 Today the English word design is used as both a noun and a verb and has attained widespread use in contemporary culture. Everything, from nails to spacecrafts, seems to be "designed." 2 In this context, we often anticipate some kind of outcome-design as something that suggests an expensive sophistication beyond the actual product, as in designer shoes, designer labels , and designer food. In this article, rather than connecting the word design with an outcome, we'll look at it as a process of drawing things together, layer by layer, into more complex arrangements. This notion of design comes from Bruno Latour, 3 who has argued that design is always a redesign, connecting elements in a way that their outcome creates something new. Other intellectuals have also thought of it in this way. Vilem Flusser wrote that design does not simply draw art, science, and technology together, but rather it is a synthesis, the combination of two or more elements toward a new unity, connecting separated knowledge domains. 4 In his book The Semantic Turn, 5 Klaus Krippendorf described a paradigm shift in design from thinking about how artifacts function to how we are infl uenced by them and how they connect individuals and create discourses. Visualization design focuses on one specifi c aspect of design: the "drawing together" of visual arrangements of information to amplify cogni-tion. Visualization is an important tool, necessary for making sense of vast amounts of data. 6,7 Many data science projects make use of visualization techniques to illustrate and explain their results. They generally follow this rigid order: analyze and acquire results fi rst; then visualize the fi ndings to facilitate communication. 8 But complex interactive visualizations can also be excellent exploration tools to help guide the analysis, detect early signs of problems and irregularities, suggest new discoveries, test the effectiveness and effi ciency of scientifi c models, and so forth. 9 For the same purpose , many data scientists use simple visual methods such as static scatterplots and histograms, but the large amount of data they consider makes this process ineffi cient. With the expert use of current advanced visualization techniques, the process could be much faster and streamlined. As part of our research, we apply Hadley Wick-ham's notion about the interplay between statistics (in our case, data science) and visualization: visualization is a tool that helps us discover relationships , whereas statistics helps us understand if the relationships really exist. 10 Wickham and his colleagues described statistics as a tool of skepticism and visualization as a tool of curiosity. La plateforme opensource MyWebIntelligence (ou MyWI,) est un projet de recherche produit par le laboratoire MICA dans le cadre de l’Institut des Humanités Digitales qui vise à fournir un outil stratégique dans l’analyse et l’intelligence de la communication sur Internet.

Il s’agit d’un « crawler » d’une nouvelle génération qui constitue, à partir d’un dictionnaire de mots clés, une base de données des pages web qualifiées au service de l’intelligence stratégique. Il intégrera non seulement de nombreuses sources de données externes et Open Data mais aussi les derniers algorithmes de qualification de données (SNA, TextAnalysis, etc.)

Le CHU de Bordeaux a souhaité participer aux bêta tests de cette plateforme autour d’un projet pilote qui vise à mettre en place une étude débouchant sur une veille du discours thérapeutique et affilié. En effet le web a bouleversé l’ordre du discours médical. Première source d’information du patient et des accompagnants, il est un espace non structuré voire anarchique de prise de parole où la légitimité des savoirs et la hiérarchisation des connaissances s’avèrent difficiles. Pourtant ces « savoirs » sont aujourd’hui de plus en plus prégnant dans l’univers du malade.

MyWebIntelligence peut fournir les moyens d’appréhender, de qualifier et de hiérarchiser une masse de discours considérable afin de cartographier l’univers discursif de l’information médicale pédiatrique. L’ensemble du corps médical pourra ainsi non seulement avoir des études en temps réel sur le discours thérapeutique en ligne mais aussi mieux appréhender les acteurs hétérogènes du savoir et leurs stratégies argumentaires.

This article reflects on the findings of the data visualization project Dystopia-Utopia (www.dystopia-utopia.com) and investigates the existence of a common discourse that would stand out in Science Fiction Movies as a significant social modifier. In this approach with the use of a built interactive Circular Hierarchial Edge Bundling Data Visualization system, the data provided by the online participants have been analyzed and the results show that Dystopia theme has been more frequently spoken in the discourse of mainstream Science Fiction Movies.

It is now common practice to conclude the research or analysis phase of a design project with a " framework " to capture and describe the stable, structural aspects of the research findings. By definition, frameworks tend towards abstraction and simplification, thereby helping the core design team distill their insights. The downside of a framework is that abstraction and simplification make the work less useful and communicative to anyone who has not experienced the richness and full context of the data. In the conventional design process, this poses little problem, as the people who develop the tools also use the tools. Advancement in information and technology has made a major impact on medical science where the researchers come up with new ideas for improving the classification rate of various diseases. Breast cancer is one such disease killing large number of people around the world. Diagnosing the disease at its earliest instance makes a huge impact on its treatment. The authors propose a Binary Bat Algorithm (BBA) based Feedforward Neural Network (FNN) hybrid model, where the advantages of BBA and efficiency of FNN is exploited for the classification of three benchmark breast cancer datasets into malignant and benign cases. Here BBA is used to generate a V-shaped hyperbolic tangent function for training the network and a fitness function is used for error minimization. FNNBBA based classification produces 92.61% accuracy for training data and 89.95% for testing data.

The increasing use of data visualization for displaying information in a transdisciplinary environment
raises issues about client information seeking in the decision-making processes. Field
experts and individuals with high confidence tend to seek less information for their decisions than
non-experts and individuals who are less confident. This work fills a gap about the effect of the
information display format, visual or nonvisual, upon the client’s decision. In the context of data
visualization and confirmation bias, this work provides needed research on computer aided information
seeking in a decision-making, informing environment. Guided by the theories of confirmation
bias and cognitive fit, we propose and test a model that investigates the impact of apriori
decision confidence on seeking more information and information usefulness. Findings indicate
that both information presentation type and confirmation bias affect the decision process of
the information seeker. Findings also indicate that overall, the higher the confidence, the less
likely users will find disconfirming evidence useful.

This thesis documents the implementation of a system which allows the collection and analysis of Berlin housing data and provides a web application in which users can explore Berlins rental landscape, through an interactive and informative experience, as well as intuitive and understandable data visualization for users of all data literacy levels.
