The biological literature databases continue to grow rapidly with vital information that is important for conducting sound biomedical research and development. The current practices of manually searching for information and extracting pertinent knowledge are tedious, time-consuming tasks even for motivated biological researchers. Accurate and computationally efficient approaches in discovering relationships between biological objects from text documents are important for biologists to develop biological models. The term "object" refers to any biological entity such as a protein, gene, cell cycle, etc. and relationship refers to any dynamic action one object has on another, e.g. protein inhibiting another protein or one object belonging to another object such as, the cells composing an organ. This paper presents a novel approach to extract relationships between multiple biological objects that are present in a text document. The approach involves object identification, reference resolution, ontology and synonym discovery, and extracting object-object relationships. Hidden Markov Models (HMMs), dictionaries, and N-Gram models are used to set the framework to tackle the complex task of extracting object-object relationships. Experiments were carried out using a corpus of one thousand Medline abstracts. Intermediate results were obtained for the object identification process, synonym discovery, and finally the relationship extraction. For the thousand abstracts, 53 relationships were extracted of which 43 were correct, giving a specificity of 81 percent. These results are promising for multi-object identification and relationship finding from biological documents.

I argue that Simone de Beauvoir's chapter " Biological Data, " from The Second Sex is grounded in her reading of Hegel's, Philosophy of Nature. This reading reveals original formulations of her understanding of the concept of life, the relation of the individual organism to the species, and the necessity of heterosexual reproduction. Beauvoir's strategic engagement with Hegel on the themes of organic life and the rational division of the sexes deepens our understanding of the complexity of Beauvoir's approach in The Second Sex, and opens up radically different possibilities regarding the configuration and metaphysical necessity of human sexuality and reproduction.

Laboratory and field investigations were carried out to investigate the nature and role of the male pheromone emitted by the Dynast beetle Scapanes australis and to develop a mass trapping technique against this major coconut pest in Papua New Guinea. We report the biological data obtained from natural and synthetic pheromone, previously described as an 84:12:4 (w/w) mixture of 2-butanol (1), 3-hydoxy-2-butanone (2), and 2,3-butanediol (3). EAG recordings from natural and synthetic pheromone and a pitfall olfactometer were poorly informative. In contrast, extensive field trapping trials with various synthetic pheromone mixtures and doses showed that 1 and 2 (formulated in polyethylene sachets in 90:5 v/v ratio) were necessary and sufficient for optimum long-range attraction. We describe a conceptual model, the wetland continuum, which allows wetland managers, scientists, and ecologists to consider simultaneously the influence of climate and hydrologic setting on wetland biological communities. Although multidimensional, the wetland continuum is most easily represented as a two-dimensional gradient, with ground water and atmospheric water constituting the horizontal and vertical axes, respectively. By locating the position of a wetland on both axes of the continuum, the potential biological expression of the wetland can be predicted at any point in time. The model provides a framework useful in the organization and interpretation of biological data from wetlands by incorporating the dynamic changes these systems undergo as a result of normal climatic variation rather than placing them into static categories common to many wetland classification systems. While we developed this model from the literature available for depressional wetlands in the prairie pothole region of North America, we believe the concept has application to wetlands in many other geographic locations.

New series of sulfonamide derivatives of [1,3,4]thiadiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidine were synthesized and investigated as antitumor agents. Some of the newly prepared compounds were tested for their in vitro and in vivo antitumor activities. Preliminary biological studies revealed that compounds 4c, 4f, and 4j exhibited the highest affinity to DNA, while compounds 4h,i, 6a–c, 8 and 12–14 exhibited moderate activity. Also, compounds 4j, 4f and 4c showed the highest percentage increase in lifespan of mice inoculated with Ehrlich ascites cells over 5-flurouracil (positive control). We report a new transformation, the LogDet, that is consistent for sequences with differing nucleotide composition and that have arisen under simple but asymmetric stochastic models of evolution. This transformation is required because existing methods tend to group sequences on the basis of their nucleotide composition, irrespective of their evolutionary history. This effect of differing nucleotide frequencies is illustrated by using a tree-selection criterion on a simple distance measure defined solely on the basis of base composition, independent of the actual sequences. The new LogDet transformation uses determinants of the observed divergence matrices and works because multiplication of determinants (real numbers) is commutative, whereas multiplication of matrices is not,except in special symmetric cases. Aliwal Shoal lies south of Durban in South Africa and has been the subject of recent bathymetric, seafloor and benthic surveys. ANOVA of the biological data revealed that the biota were uniformly distributed on the reef with the exception of encrusting sponges and algae on rock. The variations in distribution of these biota were significant and, in the case of the encrusting sponges, appeared to be related to the discharge of a wood pulp effluent. Further evidence of this was suggested by stable isotope analyses of representative organisms. The encrusting sponges were recommended as good candidates for further monitoring of the effects of the wood pulp effluent on Aliwal Shoal as the effluent pipeline has been extended.
